Carlsen blitzes Shirov at 2007 World Championship

Featured is the chess game between Magnus Carlsen and Alexey Shirov from the 2007 World Blitz Chess Championship. Carlsen's play appears almost effortless out of a Ruy Lopez with 9.Bg5. Shirov's immediate response to Carlsen's 9th move is to break the pin, which creates many weaknesses in the process. The most vulnerable square, f5, captures Carlsen's attention. His simple yet effective plan from that point is to drift towards f5 with a menacing knight.

Carlsson has a knack of being able to smother someone into a resignation...... Everytime im watching one of his games Im like "Ooh nasty, mhm actually Ireckon if I do this and this...." 2Moves later.... "Oh, thats why that wouldnt work, still screwed"..... As someone growing up in the late 80's and being a massive Fischer, Karpov and Kasparov fan, I cant believe how phenomenal Carlsson is compared to the greats of old.... 🥰

@@Loots1 Norwegian, I'm pretty sure. Apologese I just realised I misspelled the "DBL SS" in his name. My phone does that randomly caus I do speak with other people from the Nordic area, so it kinda has a world of it's own when I try to spell things manually. my apologies for the mistranslation 🙂 Love and peace from Wales 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Wasteful moves will definitely hurt. That black Knight being almost worthless the entire game is what caused white to have the advantage. Great video. I've had similar defenses after castling the King, and I agree, it is better, opening up the rook is huge.
