Carlos Acosta's final main stage curtain call as Principal Guest Artist of The Royal Ballet

Ойын-сауық

Carlos Acosta gave his final main stage performance as a Principal of The Royal Ballet on 12 November 2015. Find out more at www.roh.org.uk/people/carlos-a...
The video includes speeches by Kevin O'Hare, Director of The Royal Ballet, as well as Carlos himself, who is joined by his young daughter, wife and members of the cast of Carmen.
Cuban dancer Carlos Acosta is a Principal Guest Artist of The Royal Ballet. He has danced with many of the leading ballet companies in the world. He joined The Royal Ballet in 1998 and became a Principal Guest Artist in 2003. His many roles for the Company include Siegfried (Swan Lake), Albrecht (Giselle), The Prince (The Nutcracker), Des Grieux (Manon), Prince Florimund (The Sleeping Beauty), Basilio (Don Quixote) and Apollo. He has staged Don Quixote and created the new work Carmen for the Company.
Acosta was born in Havana and trained at the National Ballet School of Cuba, going on to dance with the English National Ballet, the National Ballet of Cuba and the Houston Ballet. The culture and history of his home country have been important influences throughout his career, and in 2003 his show Tocororo - A Cuban Tale, loosely based on his childhood, broke box office records at Sadler’s Wells Theatre. His 2007 autobiography No Way Home was a UK bestseller and he is currently developing plans for a new ballet school in Cuba. 2013 saw the publication of his first novel, Pig’s Foot.
Acosta has received many awards throughout his career, including an Olivier Award for Outstanding Achievement in Dance in 2007 and a Prix Benois de la Danse in 2008, and in 2014 he was made a CBE for services to ballet. In June 2011 he performed with Tamara Rojo at the opening night of Romeo and Juliet at the O2 Arena, London, to an audience of 13,500.

I literally just found about Carlos two days a go from coronavirus binge watching the Royal Ballet and I'm sobbing so hard. My heart can't take it. So passionate, hardworking and beautiful. Never seen him dance except a little bit in Carmen but from his rehearsal videos alone I love him.

I feel so proud of you Carlos, we grew up in the same neighborhood, in Havana. I used to see you dancing Break Dance with Opito at school many many times, you both were explosive and despite I was very young at that time, something told me that you will arrive so far. Thanks for placing so high the name or our beautiful island, Cuba and the best of luck for your new projects there.

I have had the privilege and pleasure in recent years of seeing Carlos performing many times in the Royal Opera House and elsewhere. He is not only an unsurpassed dancer, but also a humble and delightful person to meet at the stage door. His performance in "Giselle" in 2014 was unforgettable, as, indeed, was any performance he gave. His choreographic work in "Tocororo", "Don Quixote" and recently in "Carmen" are additional facets of his talent. I was at this final main-stage performance of "Carmen" at the ROH and the atmosphere at the curtain call was magical, the audience with lumps in their throats as we paid tribute to his wonderful career and thanked him for all the pleasure he has given over 17 years. Bravo, Carlos!!

Carlos: Unique in every way. Incredible talent and truly nice person, and so encouraging to young dancers. He broke the mould for male dancers and completely changed the public perception of ballet. Men have left the era of "supporting the ballerina" behind and produced new dynamic male dancers that audiences crave to see. How lucky audiences were, to see Carlos perform, live in cinemas around the world. Ballet has changed forever; and for the better.

He has an amazing way of delivering humour through his expressions, not to mention his charming smile! I was in tears watching this farewell :') What a great gem he has been for ballet and dancers all over the world!

I have the DVD with him and Natalia dancing giselle. Thank you Carlos. Guess because I have the DVD, I don’t think I’d known he’d retired . Good luck in future projects .
