I grew up with a vinyl 33 1/3 LP recording with Arthur Rubinstein in the 1950's. It was wonderful then and still is. A masterpiece of romantic symphonic music. It a mystery why it is obscure.

this is such a romantic masterpiece from Weber. Can't deny he is one of the most under-rated composer.

Beethoven demanded that Weber come to see him. Weber eagerly obeyed the Master and they met in 1823. He came despite a fierce thunderstorm. Who would know more about a composer than Beethoven?

WOW! einfach wundervoll! ich weiß nicht, ob es jemand bemerk hat, aber hier beweist weber, dass er beethoven um mindestens 50ig jahre voraus ist und eher nach bruckner klingt. fantastisches fragment!. WOW! just wonderful! i don't know if anyone noticed, but here weber proves that he is at least 50 years ahead of beethoven and sounds more like bruckner. fantastic fragment!.

..-Ihre Begeisterung ist zu teilen, aber diese Musik - und auch andere von ihm - klingt gar nicht nach Bruckner, jene Musik ist ganz anders, auch schon in deren Stilkriterien.

Here are the sections of the work, and their programmatic allusions: (F minor; Larghetto affetuoso): "A châtelaine sits alone on her balcony, gazing off in the distance. Her knight has gone on a Crusade to the Holy Land. Years have passed, battles have been fought; is he still alive? Will she ever see him again?" (F minor; Allegro passionato): "Her excited imagination summons a vision of her noble husband lying wounded and forsaken on the battlefield. Could she not fly to his side and die with him? She falls back, unconscious. Then from the distance comes the sound of a trumpet. There in the forest something flashes in the sunlight as it comes nearer and nearer" (C major: Tempo di marcia): "Knights and squires, with the Crusaders' cross and banners waving, are acclaimed by the crowd. And there her husband is among them! She sinks into his arms." (F major, Presto giocoso): "Happiness without end! The woods and waves sing a song of love, while a thousand voices proclaim its victory".

You have a very fine ear, absolutely right. All great composers took stimulations from other great composers by borrowing small themes. At 7:20 Weber is using the introduction of the fourth movement of his own piano sonata no. 2
