Carl Jung and the Shadow: The Mechanics of Your Dark Side

Фильм және анимация

Carl Jung was one of the most important psychologists of the previous century.
The notion of the shadow is central to the human condition and the ability to deal with it constitutes a challenging endeavor for most of us.
I hope that, by watching this video, shadow work reveal some important personal truths and that the process of assimilation will become less strenuous.

Most times it is sexually driven to be, what I like to say as, "Hostage By the Prisoner" (Free mind of Fools and Corpses). *I am working on that last one, but sexuality must be tops because it's the single most natural activity, other that eating. Eat, hump, eat, shit, work, nap, drink, probation, excuses, divorce, fun fucken because it feels good. All while your inner calmness is like: "So, who brought did futtin guy?" The Tao for sure exists in the present moment and without narrative or words or description. There is a reason that most descriptions of the Tao are contradictory. Once you get it, the contradictions actually work to describe it to a degree.

Being a child whose early life was all trauma I created a person I had to play. I became a musician actress, singer ,performer of course Later after the panic attacks, anxiety, depression began I was Drawn to Carl Jung's work. It helped me over time to finally Understand all of myself including my shadow side and the continued rage I had. One of the best things I realized was yes I am crazy and strange and So much happier than ever. Having purged so much of the rage during a spiritual awakening now when my shadow side comes I understand it and know that I Accept and love myself more Than I ever have.

As lonely and challenging as my early life as been as a result, ultimately it has served me well and I am truly grateful for this journey I am on. Interestingly, the knowledge and wisdom of the great thinkers of our time (and before) found their way to me not the other way around. It's like my thoughts and questions drew me to engage in seemingly unrelated activities or people that somehow ended up connecting me to resources I wasn't specifically looking for. An example, my interest in Tarot..lead to an interest in symbolism and spirituality. Then seemingly unrelated , I eventually became interested in psychology..which l lead me to Jung, then back to Tarot.

It's easy to ignore or deny the darker aspects of ourselves, but Jung's work reminds us that these aspects are a part of us too. You know, having just played Persona 4 again, I realized something. Initially, I always found it odd how the characters would always react so harshly to their own shadow selves, but in hindsight it makes sense. The shadow is everything we don’t know about ourselves, everything we suppress. The conscious mind doesn’t regularly interact with the shadow, so it is generally unaware of it, and that’s why they react so strongly to it: in their eyes, they aren’t denying some hidden truth about themselves, they’re just refuting something that they know is incorrect, yet is actually true. That’s terrifying. Just imagine how much accumulated shit we don’t know about ourselves. How much that we would need pointed out to us.

We get to the light via the dark. Making the unconscious, conscious, is hampered by many factors, mainly suppression, denial, and erroneous beliefs. Suppression polarizes the psyche, creating an inner schism that is reflected in our behaviour and symptoms. As what is in shadow is also the cosmic aspect of our being, intellect alone is not enough. The deeper mysteries require not simply a change in consciousness but in our way of being. To this extent, oneness is key. Oneness with self, others and the universe. Without a relationship to the divine, your full potential will remain elusive and unconscious.

I think the understanding that everyone has a shadow self is important, for oneself and the people around them. In order to know ourselves, we should pay attention to our behaviors, even our behaviors that aren't good, or the negative aspects of ourselves that are psychologically linked to hidden issues. Once we realize our personal problems, even if we need to reach out for assistance by a psychologist or therapist, then we can work on it. Spiritualists call this "shadow work," but doctors call this "treatment." This also helps our relationships with the people we interact with throughout our life because then we won't accidentally allow our shadow self to misbehave when interacting with others, and therefore hurting our relationships. Also, when we realize everyone else also has a shadow self, we become aware that some of their behaviors maybe linked to darker aspects linked to their psychological self, and when we dive into psychology it shows us which signs to look for. Everyone has a shadow self, but not everyone's is the same, just like our personalities we present to the world so when looking for friends I usually look for these darker things to figure who's light *and shadow* I'm willing to work with and befriend. It's important because it effects how we interact socially almost everyday.

@Xavier Gomez Carl Jung was a pioneer in discovering the subconscious, his concepts such as archetypes, collective unconscious, dreams, synchronicity, anima and animus have nothing to do with scientology, I vaguely remember watching this video, it's not one I'd recommend about Jung or his concept of the shadow. L. Ron Hubbard said he was thinking about how to make money. He said he'd start a religion and wrote a book called Dianetics I think. I had a friend whose girlfriend's mother got involved in scientology in the late 70's, the teenage daughters were held in a locked room for an extended period for "deprogramming" which was, in fact, brainwashing. They signed over all their assets to the church. I assume that's standard procedure. Pneuma is continually in flux. One has to turn inward to find what one seeks, if they are spiritual seekers. Dogma 👎

  • @robinpotter963

    @robinpotter963

@Xavier Gomez Metaphysics encompasses a broad spectrum of philosophical paths, metaphysics is not a singular idea, Aristotle used the word meaning beyond the known physics or physical laws. Have you read Carl Jung's Seven Sermons to the Dead? Or heard of The Red Book recently published? I'm glad you got out of scientology, others weren't as lucky. It is a cult. Don't believe what others tell you to believe, even ME. My experiences in life have led me to understand, by personal experience, that the mind exists outside the brain and the brain acts as a receiver. I know this because of my experience of being brain dead and on life support for eight days with my brain in constant seizures, rendering it incapable of conscious thought, yet I was aware of going to dialysis, having visitors and other things that were verifiable facts that happened to the body I was temporarily separated from. After an otherworldly experience was when I realized what was happening and I was told that if I lived until the sun rose, I'd live, if not I'd die. Lots of people who don't believe in the afterlife are in for a shock when they realize they are still here, but their bodies aren't. It's difficult to expand on C.G. Jung, even though my daughter has a Bachelor's degree in psychology, Jung was barely a footnote in the curriculum. I remember when I took psychology 101 Jung was spoken briefly about, but enough to pique my interest. Jung had odd experiences throughout his life that one could interpret as poltergeist activity or psychokinetic energy, telekinesis; either way, once their solid oak table split with a huge cracking noise. Unexplained phenomena like that colored his work. You sound young, my daughter is 44, she's still a kid, you sound younger than her. It's good that you are seeking, Jesus said to seek until you find, then still keep seeking & what you find will amaze you. I also am into eastern philosophy, I've been doing yoga for about 35 years. Yoga means to yoke with. There are several different philosophies just for yoga alone, yoga can be the yoga of helping other sentient beings and have nothing to do with the Hatha yoga physical postures I love, Hatha yoga incorporates breath, movement and energy. It's essential for me. It quiets the chatter that's known as "monkey mind". I highly recommend Hatha yoga for everyone just for the physical benefits alone. Practice long enough and the benefits transcend the physical. Here's a link to gnosis.org scroll down and you'll find Carl Jung. There are many schools of thought in metaphysics. Metaphysics isn't a single school of thought. The Red Book was his personal book, bound in red leather, filled with his paintings and mandalas, I haven't gotten to see what was published. I read The Seven Sermons to the Dead in a library book, which is the best place to start, forget the internet and go check out some physical books where you can flip through the pages and see what resonates with you. Depending on how deep the cult had their clutches in you, you may need help in getting out, if they are still bothering you. If you have no material possessions, they've probably given up because they want you to sign everything you own over to them. Be still and know that I am God came to mind for you. Listen to the still, quiet voice inside. It's in thought form, I'm not talking about auditory voices. Here's a link to Gnosis.org gnosis.org/welcome.html I also use a great site for eastern philosophy but I don't know the link right now. I'm glad you got out of scientology without completely shutting down as so many live in fear. L. Ron Hubbard started the "religion" known as scientology as a way to get rich, he said that himself, before he wrote the book, which I read part of in the 1970s before tossing it with some other garbage. Try reading Plato's Cave. It's a great metaphorical work on how limited our view of reality is. Right now, we are completely unaware of the neutrinos bombarding us from space passing through our bodies and the planet, yet they are there, our limited senses are oblivious to the fact. The world is MAYA, illusion. There are many teachers, some famous, some may be the next homeless person you meet. Best regards in your search, there's books by people trying to analyze Jung's life and work. You can't really say much in a KZread comment. I suppose I should watch the video again before I leave any more comments. It was a rudimentary video I believe, but you can't talk about something so complex in a short video. Jung split from Freud over his metaphysical work, which ended with Gnosticism.

@Xavier Gomez Hi Xavier, I was going through my phone and I found this excellent article on Carl Jung that has far more information about Jung than I could share with you; I'm still learning about him myself. REALLY interesting were the paranormal activity surrounding the family home. I'm not sure if this article mentions that, where the family heard a LOUD cracking noise and investigated, finding the solid oak table split into two parts. Jung himself was a seeker. Here you go, my animals are waiting for me outside. If you want, you can see some of them on my KZread channel. Feral cats are good friends, as are the street dogs we've had through the years, 6 dogs right now. People say that's a lot, but we've had more. Fostered 2 dogs who would have been killed at the shelter, they're back with their dad. It took him two years to find a pet friendly place. His dog's excitement and joy to see him, especially when they were going to the new family home made it worth it. gnosis.org/library/7Sermons.htm

The shadow tool requires that you both look at yourself in the form of binary, you exist on a spectrum of your various traits and this spectrum which slides as negative feelings and beliefs start to pile up then you slide towards the unconcious shadow side for survival. You are also a constant where the ego exists. Your ego demands you remain static and stand by your beliefs. It's this simultaneous experience of both being dynamic and static at the same time that creates the tension between the unconcious and concious mind.

If your not prepared for waking up to this it can be very difficult to function in daily life. I could listen to your voice/accent all day long 💟. I JUST am having an epiphany and have heard of the shadow side spiritually. I know it's my next step, to deal with my shadow side but have been exercising my thinking to make it maleable enough for me to rewrite, "properly" (my own unique image). I became aware of my spirituality in 2017 but it took til now to understand enough to get to this point. So as I'm spending time being inspired by Abraham Hicks videos, I came across your video here. I needed direction as to what my shadow side was. I was under the impression that it meant I had to sit down with my heart and cry about my pain but thank goodness I put THAT off 😂. I know I need to activate my heart neurons again but this is probably the door to go through first. Now I understand better what my shadow self really is and I was getting that mixed up with activating my heart chakra. I felt very powerful while listening to you as I felt understanding AND capability. I realize this is a more unique effect of what your effort was here but I wanted you to feel YOUR power so I'm sharing it with you. 💕 I disagree about life being struggle. I love the way you and the person you were reading from (Peterson) described the process but I have been thinking the exact way you described and am actually, at this moment, trying to free myself from that thinking. I find it fascinating that at the same moment I'm consciously trying to free myself from that perception (& dissecting it so I understand my motivations and all the parts) that I run into your eloquent and detailed description that only solidified my belief in myself that I'd already come to the same conclusions. The Universe's synchronicity 💓 I feel it is disempowering to believe that life is struggle, as well as detrimental to positive manifestation. There are much more constructive views to work with as your basis. For instance, life is a gift, not a punishment or victim situation. It is like going swimming with a concrete block tied to you. Spiritually, one must have a positive perception of life to appreciate it, rather than attaching a negative connotation and then seeing it as work and surrupticious manipulation, even if you're conscious of it. Instead, I believe that there's no point in working with old clay you've had to "melt down" and carve. It is a previous way of thinking but it is thinking that belonged to harder times and depresses the spirit into negative manifestation. I've done this all just life for the same purpose you mentioned - to constantly work on the higher moral ground by absorbing all the information I can, intellectually and empathically and come to the most kind, logical decisions. I'm not saying that it's wrong to do that but it's interesting it was part of the "life is struggle" portion. I act in this manner BECAUSE I've seen life as suffering. It is for this reason that I try to contribute to improving the suffering lives of human life by having solutions or values (which I 90% adhere to because I'm not perfect) that will last into the future. Therefore my thinking had to work for now and into the future (the logical part) so that the species survives and thrives. However, either I took it too far or this was not the correct or most positive way to deal with it. How can one prefer to manifest the best of the best when one is only manifesting or professing the best of the mediocre or not-so-best? One could work with clean and moist clay. If something falls into it while you're moulding, one can dig it out OR leave it in as part of the processing of the sculpture. The latter would be integrating the shadow side. Digging it out only cuts out the pieces from the sculpture but still exist as they lay on the board trying to be forgotten or ignored. And your wrap up was beautiful. YOU are beautiful. I admire your eloquence and the words you read as well as the words you wrote were like you made up the English language yourself. Your accent is like butter 😍 Thank you. Merci. Miigwetch. I believe you are confusing subjects here. Recognition of the shadow has nothing to do with optimism or pessimism, it's about the whole spectrum of the human psyche. The animal within. The fear, anger, aggression, etc. A healthy person learns to integrate those components into a functional personality. Example Jung gave was that aggression can be channeled into a healthy way of asserting yourself in life.

I cant even begin to describe the depth and profundity within jung. Its not only the meditation on ones own thoughts and behaviours, rather than just existing and reacting, but it is the juxtaposition of ones self in relation to others. It is the awareness of ones own ego and persona and the lies we tell ourselves to inflate our own worth and gravitas, and then examining the weakness at the root of the behavior that attaches worth to ego. Furthermore it is the awareness of the shadow, but the insight to understand that the path to completion and self actualization is through the embodiment of the shadow is absolutely brilliant, and i have lived and experienced this. We all exist through our own experience, and the meditation on the shadow is its relation between light and dark and how it juxtaposes ones self in relation to others. It is meditating on the enemy and how one becomes the enemy. It is fighting for love and then having love turn bitter and then becoming hated, and understanding how ego is attached to others; and taking that power away from people, and then doing the same with ones shadow. To fully know ones self is to detach from people and ask of oneself if i am light or dark, and what is it that my shadow wants, and then to realize that I am my shadow and then to look that person in the face. We have all felt good and bad or innocent and guilty and this is determined in relation to other people, and jung is a meditation on asking the question and determining on ones own. It is understanding that every setting is a courtoom and freeing oneself of ego and being in love and feeling good, and having that love turn bitter and becoming the hated nazi, and feeling that pain swell to a rage and then truly meditating one ones own shadow and what the capacity and depth of your own hatred says about the person you are, and then seeing that person in a mirror, and then walking that hatred through darkness only to reach the other side, and it is at that point that you will see the farthest reaches of your psyche and in Jung's eyes you will become complete.

@@ It can be stressful and enjoyable to journey towards the truth, but results are positive because the good, the bad and the ugly belong to the concept. What we have today is a US NAT0 combination that intend to rule the world and charges protection money to some countries while threatening others. The human trafficking of migrants is being taken over at the Southern border by the Administration. This is the name of the game and Citizens and Nations adjust according to their awareness interests and level of conditioning. In industrial terms the main Mafioso are Europe, Russia, China, Canada and of course the USA. It would be irrealistic for China and America to go to war one against the other: the real opposition is Russia and Putin fall into the trap of attacking Ukraine giving a combined opportunities for Mafia servants and masters to use the chaos of warfare to their real or pseudo advantage.

Important tip. Make sure your breathing is within your awareness as often as possible. It can change the rythm of mind/emotions/experience while dealing with whatever situation inside and outside. Since Jung dealed also with spirituality i will add. (Only for very curious ones who like to dig deep) There is really nothing happening outside because you can never be outside of yourself. So all experiences, whatever we deal with or observing within our minds or with our senses in objective, material world through senses is happening within us. Everything we can percieve is inward experience. We experience color and therefore claim existence of colors. Most animals don't or coloblind people..Tgerefore they can all agree that there is no such thing as color due to their similar experience which is also inward in each individual, but similarity of perceptions mechanism is there. If we also ever realize simple thing, that, our body is matter accumulated over a period of time , and that what we call as our minds,is nothing but accumulated information, we can come to a point of realization that,we cannot be what we have, since,we are able to create distance and observe all these things we were wrongly identified with. Now real question is Who is the observer? Can observer be observed? Body and its functionings can. Mind and its functionings can as well. Who is the observer and can observer be observed. Give your attention to this. Suddenly, all shadows can drop due to higer presence of light,we can see, certain "objects" created shadows due to lack of light and therefore we feared shadow as something real. "Objects" are nothing but thought which is not observed closely. And observation is like a beam of light. If we disengage in the process of wrong identifications with that we are not. All the shadows will drop with it as well. Because their existence is not something real, however appearance seem to be real. More we run away, more it persists. Turn around and look at it. Just make sure that breathing is a conscious while observing. 🙏🏼 P.s If someone claims that life is suffering. Well. That's his life due to inability of creating distance and taking charge of that which is manufacturing our experience

Analysing why I despise some people and recognising that I despise in them what I am hiding from myself and projecting was really helpful. I just had to practice catching myself. After a while it becomes quite comical when you realise what a fraud you are. But strangely, it doesn't bother me at the moment. It has made me much more able to approach people and situations with a sense of detachment which gives me space to respond with more wisdom. I went through a period of being afraid and wobbly, I wondered if I was losing my mind as I felt like I didn't know who I am anymore but that feeling has subsided and now I realise that a lot of me is still unknown anyway and it is an ongoing process of discovery. I can understand why Jung said the process is dangerous. I pace myself now and take my time,

I find your approach and transparency refreshing. I find Jung engaging, particularly his initial recollection of his own sentience at age 11. My initial sentience occurred much younger on Christmas Day 1962 prior to my 2nd birthday in March of '63. My personal understanding created a conundrum regarding the hostile, negative aspect of my inner voice vs. the external melding of the lightbody spirit with my inner spirit/soul. My understanding of this assimilation has definitely defined my current self over the last nearly 57 years, with many misunderstandings about the process occurring, but a nearly unbelievable parallel with Jung in his observations, as I now UN them. My terminology and cosmological pov is somewhat different, undoubtedly, but my essential understanding is so very close that I must assume it is Universally Available to each of us in our own ways. It reinforces the understanding I have of my Relationship with my Creator and Christ, while permitting me to grow beyond the confines of any specific denomination or doctrines or philosophies, leaving my spirit free by the Grace I have received to keep my own shadow close enough to my Central Core of faith that it is less apt to be able to operate unchecked by my more dominant desires of my own greater self. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and insights and for sharing your gifts. Blessings.

What do you do when you recognize, acknowledge, and accept the dark side of yourself, but can not subdue it? What do you do when you know it is slowly consuming you, with each passing year, with every interaction... eating away at you piece by piece. I fear I am in danger of losing what little light I have left. When I was young I had so much light, hope, and tolerance...

Nice treatment of a serious topic. My own journey began as with many - with childhood insecurity and its cousins, defiance and control. After fifty years of socially acceptable professional discipline, I faced a personal crisis that introduced me to my shadow where upon I found something surprising. All along my shadow was a source of great constructive power. So I unleashed the beast and let it do it’s work. Needless to say, that led to many consequences of which the most important lesson was a very simple one. Respect. Since then I live with my shadow but not unfettered, but rather integrated. Like all things, it has a place and time, but it needs watchful caring.
