Caring for Peanut Rabbit Kits - A Story of Faith

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

This is the inspiring story of Faith, our peanut bunny kit who lived for 13 days. Peanut rabbit kits suffer from a birth defect common to dwarf breeds that prevents its pituitary gland from releasing enough growth hormone. This is the result if the kit getting two copies of the dwarf gene from its parents. Hence, peanut kits don’t grow and don’t normally live beyond a few days. Faith lived for almost two weeks in spite of the odds - her mom refused to feed her and she was the lone survivor of a litter. Taking care of her was a joy and she was an amazing bunny. This is her story.

    I know it has been a year but I’m so sorry for your loss 😢 we had our first (only) unexpected litter December 15th 2019. We had 7 babies but one was a peanut and only lived 4 days ❤️‍🩹 my fiancé and I were devastated, we knew it was going to happen but nothing could prepare us. Over those 4 days I got so attached to him/her, feeding, holding and just constantly checking on him. We did get him cremated so I could always have him with us and we were renting and had no where to burry him. Seeing your video brought all the feels back and I balled like a baby 🥺 so sorry for you loss

    Thank you. I pray that your little one is just a runt, in which case it will just need extra feedings from its mom. If its parents are dwarf breeds, however, and if it stops growing and has bulging eyes, it may be a peanut. Just stay strong and just pamper it with love. Let mom bond with it too. It comforts the baby.

    Awwww this makes me so sad. We just had our first litter and a little peanut, who was not even half the size of his/her 9 brothers and sisters. Mama had no milk and we had to feed them all with syringe 2x a day. We got so attached to Lil peanut and we named him/her peanut. Sadly after 4 days he/she passed away. It was a very sad day. Oh no! I’m so sorry for your peanut. It is really heart-breaking to lose a rabbit, especially the babies…being so young. We had so much hope for our little one too. I guess in both our cases, we have to find comfort in knowing that we did the best we could for them. It’s really tough when genetics is involved. Still, I must commend you on feeding your new litter! Such a difficult task and for Nine rabbits! Wow! I hope you can share a photo of them when you can! Such an amazing Christmas gift indeed!!!! I mean, in this case the “reason” is that people (not Faith’s family, who were ignorant about reproduction but seem to have done the best they could with the situation they had, but the creators of these rabbit breeds) wanted tiny cute bunnies and didn’t care that the genes that keep them tiny and cute are fatal if a baby gets one from each parent. So keep in mind that when someone breeds dwarf rabbits, they are accepting that up to 25% of them will be like Faith and unable to thrive, unless they breed “false dwarf” individuals without the dwarf gene into the line. This protects against any peanuts being born, but most breeders won’t do it because it also results in some non-dwarf rabbits that are not fit for showing and harder to sell. 😑

  • @popcornash9903

    @popcornash9903

    2 жыл бұрын

    Most probably. We’re not breeders and Faith was part of an accidental litter. But having read up on it since, it is important to know the bloodline/genetics of your rabbits to ensure a litter without peanuts. For families like us who just adopt rabbits not knowing their history, there’s really no telling what gene combinations you’ll get should they breed. Faith is a product of a Jersey Wooly mom and Holland Lop dad, both of which carry the dwarf gene. Apparently, the likelihood of their having a peanut is 25%. We didn’t know this. They mated early at 4 months. If we had to do it again, we would have separated our bunnies at 3 months before having them fixed but of course, we didn’t know that baby bunnies were able to breed so early! Now we know and hope new bunny owners out there will learn from our experience. Still, Faith was a incredible bunny. And as heartbreaking as the experience was for us, we loved her dearly.
