Cargo Van Business Episode 5 - My Start Up Cost
I took the day off today to get this content out asap. I do apologize for the long video, it is 40 minutes long. There is a lot of info you need to know when starting your own cargo van business and I want to help as much as I can. I have a great deal of respect for anyone who walks away from their 9-5 job and becomes their own boss.
This video covers what I did step by step to start my business, how much I spent out of pocket and how much money I think you should have based on my experience when getting started. There are several expenses and obstacles you must overcome in this business. If you are dedicated and determined, this business could be life changing. The links below are videos I used when obtaining my EIN number from the IRS, my LLC in Texas and how to fill out the application on FMCSA website for my authority (DOT & MC)
EIN: • How To Get Your Tax ID...
LLC: • Video
FMCSA: • GETTING YOUR TRUCKING ...

You need business credit asap. Do it with Navy Federal. That's how your business will grow fast. Use it for gas/ equipment and vehicle payment everything else. Pay off every month. Great video. 👍

The other benefit of a business credit card is that you can also earn miles/points/cash back in those cards, and you personally can spend those earned credits on whatever it is you want to, it doesn’t have to be for the business. Earn and use the banks money, not your own.

LLCs or INCs also protect you with your taxes. You will be an employee of your LLC , your LLC pays you a salary and you in turn pay your taxes according to that salary and not by how much your company made. It’sa HUUUUGE difference taxes wise.

People always want to talk about buying something new like everybody got it like that by within your budget folks if you can get into the game with a used truck do it. Everybody doesn’t have the credit or the cash to put down on a new truck. Don’t let that discourage you I don’t have a new truck and I’m doing fine been in the business two years. Thanks for sharing! I also would like to see about tax and tax deduction as LLC. Like how much gas could be deductible and your van or truck . I know you are not a lawyer nor CPA, but paying tax AFTER business expenses is one of the beauty of owning a business 😊.

Жыл бұрын
I will definitely share that info, next year will be my 1st time filing taxes as a new business owner.
Just helping out the EIN is free to get with your Secretary of State and it ONLY tells the government how to tax you. For business credit you should register for a FREE DUNS number with Dun & Bradstreet (biggest business credit bureau) this is what you use to establish your business creditworthiness (may have to pay) some job boards even utilize it to see if your capabilities before awarding you a job. When you provide your EIN financial institutions are just going to use whichever credit report is better. Since most businesses never report business expenses, vendors, and revenue they use your personal which eliminates the whole point of an LLC

I have a cdl A as well. Being able to just drive as a company driver has benefits. Driving a cargo van without inspections and weigh stations would be nice though. Fitting anywhere a car can go, like gyms would be cool. With a tractor, you have a nice bed, a tv, microwave and refrigerator, and I don’t think you’ll get those luxuries with a cargo van. You also don’t have to worry about finding loads or paying any expenses if you drive truck. If you do decide to go the cargo van route, please let us know how it goes.

MC is for when you upscale and get drivers for the business cause when you get the MC I've heard you have 2 to 3 months to get the cargo insurance which as soon as you get it your MC would be fully active that insurance is like 1500 a month alone . I could be wrong tho
@BigCJCargoVan
Жыл бұрын
Yea, almost right. To maintain MC you need to keep minimum required commercial insurance of 300k liability and 5k cargo. I pay $500 per month. If you use your MC for contract route or OTR, you will need to increase to 1 mil liability and 100k cargo. That's when it gets really expensive. I'm just maintaining mine so it can continue to mature.
Did you buy your van under your business name? Also can you write off a sprinter van on your taxes? Thanks
@BigCJCargoVan
6 ай бұрын
I used personal credit, but I do plan on purchasing my 2nd vehicle with business credit and in my business name. You can write off, but I'm not an expert on that subject, so you'd have to contact a tax advisor.
with mc you'll need cargo insurance and if you already have cargo insurance, then might aswell get the mc and go otr and make the money

Kinda scary to take the carriage before the horse approach and buy a van prior to having business set up nor clients/carriers because it’s now a personal debt and going against personal utilization and putting 15k down is rough so many better ways to cash flow that money currently you can find a nice 2015/2016 t250 around 16-20k and that could have paid it in almost full then brought you a second driver.

You shouldn't need to get a motor Carrier number a cargo van isn't a commercial vehicle. To have an MC # you need consistent commercial insurance or it get canceled in 30 days
@BigCJCargoVan
7 ай бұрын
Technically yes, but if your hauling freight across state lines, you will be considered a commercial vehicle per fmcsa. I don't mind having the MC, I just don't agree with the insurance requirements, ridiculous.
@ModernMessiah
7 ай бұрын
@BigCJCargoVan for a semi truck I was paying $1400 per month but I was making $20-40,000 per month so it was worth it. You can't make that with a cargo van so it's not worth having an MC# that and the payment. A semi can last 400,000 miles before any major repairs. The life span of a cargo van wouldn't get you to 250,000 miles unless you baby it
Great information! I have $20,000 to get started. How would you invest that money? Buy a used van for $20?
@BigCJCargoVan
Жыл бұрын
I can't really tell you what to do with your startup money, it's completely up to you. I only purchased a more expensive van because I'm all in and don't want any problems with my van starting off. I also have a passive income to help pay my loan. You can buy a cheaper van, like 10k, especially if you're just going to do gig apps. It's always good to have extra money saved up. Do what you feel comfortable doing, but I've seen those 5 and 10k vans out here getting money as well.
Yes, that insurance is expensive with Progressive. They wanted 7,thousand down monthly 3, thousand. That's more than some tractor trailer.....What is the best company to go with.
@BigCJCargoVan
Жыл бұрын
Wow, well I have progressive and I've never heard of anyone paying 3k a month with a cargo van. I've seen people pay up to $1,700. How's your driving record? I don't understand why you were quoted so high. Progressive is the most popular and usually has the best rates. You can try some 3rd party companies that will search for the best rates for you, but progressive usually beats every other company.

@BigCJCargoVan

@@BigCJCargoVan You are doing very good, with the gig apps. Keep growing.
I'm renting my brother in law's Cargo Van. How much should I pay him on a weekly basis? We came up with $250-$300 weekly. I'm paying for gas,oil changes, and tires if need be. I'm also paying for liability insurance. Is this fair? Anyone can answer. Thanks!👌
@BigCJCargoVan
Жыл бұрын
That's a tough question to answer. I personally don't like the idea of renting, but whatever is best for you is what matters. I think the rental rate is not too bad compared to the rental price industry. I know some people get unlimited miles renting from enterprise, budget and uhaul, (companies like that). The price is usually around $400 to $500 per week or sometimes more. I know U-haul has $19 a day plus .69 per mile rate. As far as paying gas, maintenance, and insurance, I really don't know if that's fair or not. I think if your using it for OTR interstate, I guess that sounds pretty reasonable. I know most fleet owners charge around 40/60 split on profits. Hopefully, someone else can chime in, but to answer your question, in my opinion, I think it's pretty reasonable.

What if you live on a border of a state but you use gig apps and it takes you into that state... is regular insurance still Adequate... Thank you very much for all this information... it doesn't matter how long the video is, it's a lot of good information in one spot, and if a stupid SoB can't hold their attention to learn what they need, because the video is too long .. well then they deserve to learn the hard way. These apps you can't look at any freight to haul until you get mc# etc .. am I correct about this
