As a dental hygienist and A daughter whose mother is in a nursing home I would like to stress to families and care giving staff to take care of the person’s teeth and DO NOT give them sweets! I find it SO FRUSTRATING that so many family members bring the elderly sweets. Showing love through the giving of sweets is a terrible thing to do. The elderly, love sweets however, it leads to tooth decay and dental work on the elderly patient is very stressful for them, sometimes, depending on their level of mobility for instance if they are bedridden, it is impossible to get them to the dentist office. If they have severe dementia, and are in pain from a tooth, they can’t even vocalize that. I know this because my mother Cannot put two coherent words together. Also. DO NOT THINK THAT THE NURSING HOME OR ASSISTED-LIVING SITUATION THAT YOUR FAMILY MEMBER IS IN IS ADEQUATELY CARING FOR THEIR TEETH. THESE PEOPLE ARE NOT TRAINED ON HOW TO BRUSH CARE FOR SOMEONE ELSE’S TEETH. A LOT OF PATIENTS ARE NOT RECEPTIVE to having someone else in their mouth. IF YOU CAN BRUSH AND FLOSS YOUR FAMILY MEMBERS TEETH, YOURSELF. EVEN IF YOU ONLY DO IT ONCE A WEEK, BUT DO IT THOROUGHLY YOU ARE PROVIDING A HUGE SERVICE TO THEM.

I hope I will achieve some confidence in the long run of being starting to become a caregiver after my helper went home. Hopefully I can share my tasks successfully with the new maid! :-) :-) :-) Starting over again after my mother discharges from the hospital.
