    This video is super nice! As a first-gen immigrant my original goal was to major in Computer Science. However I am struggling to come to terms that I would hate it as a career - I like programming as a hobby but not as a job. I'm looking to see if I want to do a sociology degree but I'm so scared that I'll make the wrong choice again and waste more money and time. I also wasn't really interested in becoming a professor or going into counseling&similar roles, so I was afraid I was setting myself up for failure. However this video gave me a little confidence and maybe I'll end up doing a sociology major! x

    I will graduate this year from sociology degree, it's so frustrating when it comes to finding a job. We end up in debt and the only job you can go to is teaching. The stress i am going through in my final year is unbelievable. The only thing is true about a sociology degree is that we live in unequal society and to get into a job you need to know someone and meritocracy is a myth, we work hard but we re not rewarded. I ve done numerous volunteering in the past few years in different institutions and i feel it was waste of time. If you don't have networking you will get no where.

    So from my understanding, to legitimately have a claim to the title "Sociologist", you need to have some sort of graduate degree in Sociology, correct? (MA or PhD?) Yet when it comes to your 'career title', it's not always branded as "Sociologist". So someone could be working in the social sector with the title of "Program Manager", but because they have an MA in Sociology, they could also classify themselves as a Sociologist?

  • @JoellePhuaLife

    @JoellePhuaLife

    2 жыл бұрын

    Interesting question! First off, "legitimacy" is a concept that is debated in Sociology - e.g. who gets to decide what is legitimate or not. To answer your question, I would only call myself a Sociologist if that was my career - aka. doing research or in academia. Similar to someone being a Scientist or something, hope that makes sense!

    A degree/qualification that evidently exists for further education establishments and not the student ... see 7:42

    Hi! I graduated with an Associates in Sociology, Child Development, and Psychology! On my way to get my Bachelors in Sociology and apply to grad school towards a Ph.D. I've been heavily motivated towards my education for the past 2 years and I was wondering what jobs I could be eligible for in Sociology. I pick Psychology as well, since I believe both go hand-in-hand. What would you suggest? I'm also open to paid internships, especially since I'm trying to save up for grad school next year! Right now, the jobs I'm interested in are these: Banker Consumer Relations Specialist Human Resources Manager Market Analyst Merchandiser Project Manager Quality Control Manager Technical Writer Admissions Counselor Affirmative Action Counselor Teacher/Professor Interviewer Social Researcher Child Development Specialist Child Development Tech Hospital Administrator Career Counselor Substance Abuse Counselor Social Psychology Social Worker School Counselor Medical Records Clerk Market/Sales Representative So sorry for the list. Just thought I'd share how open I am to some job positions and I'm willing to learn more, as I'm going for grad school. Thank you so much!

    yup, all of the above you'd be eligible for as a sociology student ! just make sure you gain the relevant experience (degree is less important unless it's a requirement for the job)

    @@JoellePhuaLife Absolutely! I'd just thought the degree would somehow give companies some thought that I'm dedicated to interning or taking any opportunities they post!
