Care homes go into virus lockdown as workers battle to protect UK’s most vulnerable

Care workers have been thrust into the frontline protecting the most vulnerable in society - taking extreme measures to try and keep the virus at bay. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Meanwhile, Spain has reported hundreds more deaths, but the World Health Organization chief has said there should start to be a stabilisation in Spain and Italy's epidemic - as a result of the lockdown and stringent measures now in place.
Channel 4 News visited one care home in Renfrewshire, Scotland, which closed its doors to outsiders more than a fortnight ago.

From being called 'unskilled workers' by their own government to looking after the people most at risk of this virus. Carers really deserve more credit, especially since they're putting their own health on the line right now

@The Truth about Africa hurts Butts need wiped and troublesome, mentally senile people need to be fed and be treated as people. It's not glamorous work, but it needs to be done. I personally don't have the patience or the compassion or any desire to do their job, but the people who do it had my respect even before this virus.

@The Truth about Africa hurts these are the most compassionate and loyal people you will ever meet. I was a caregiver for 14 years before getting my administrator license. I now manage an assisted living facility. My caregiving staff are the most extraordinary people. I can't do enough to show them how amazing they are. They care for our clients. Provide companionship. They have the best team work. They take initiative. They love our clients like they do their own families. Not only do we have elderly clients I have a couple with traumatic brain injury. They were living normal lives until they had brain surgery go wrong or got into a horrible car accident. It can happen to you. I hope if you ever need help your caregiver treats you with respect.

what about those people who fall outside the limits of the govs narrow definition of extremely vulnerable, but are still in need of support at his time? after hours of phone calls to overstretched local charities and voluntary services for a disabled neighbour, i realise that they are left to their own devices. Lord help those without families, friends and helpful neighbours

I live in a nursing home here in Toronto Canada. Nurses Id like to hug normally, I do a special double handed 👊 to air, not touching. If residents get too close I tell them no, don't touch me, covid 19. I'm a resident who has only had 2 visits from family in 12 years. I use KZread and self isolating. Though I don't always get fed, I do order food when I don't get fed because I refuse to eat with 90 of us in the dining room. When I get pizza, I pay, take pizza to my room, wash my hands, wash the box, eat and was my hands yet again. Stay safe and stay home. 🇨🇦💯💞😡

In Spain, recently, the authorities broke down the doors of a care home. When they went inside, all the staff had fled, ages ago. What was left inside, were the bodies of the elderly...all dead. This is just an example of what could happen to other care homes who have staff who will flee in terror from this thing, leaving the elderly behind to die, alone.
