CARDBOARD SESSIONS ~ Battles ~ #12
Ойын-сауық
Formed in NYC in 2002, Battles today is ex-Don Caballero and Storm & Stress member Ian Williams and ex-Helmet and Tomahawk drummer John Stanier. Often labeled as a Math Rock band, Battles are the embodiment of musical experimentation, with a sound that’s constantly evolving. For Episode 12, we’re front and center at the famous Powerstation Studio in NYC. A place where a few rockers you may have heard of have laid down tracks, like Bruce Springsteen, Rolling Stones and Madonna.
Welcome to Cardboard Sessions. A jam format music series that brings musicians together to play instruments built and designed by the creators of Cardboard Chaos. A creative exploration for the love of music and the chance to hear something original. No rehearsals, no plan. The moment when a creative spark hits and you dig deep to explore the realm.

My fav uncles!!
So this is how Battles sounds at 2023. Amazing stuff.
It's so wild how it goes from being almost a mess for a couple of bars and the John reinterpretes the pattern and suddenly it all works 😅
Love watching my dad play drums

So do we… for more than 30 years now… Saw him play last week in Boston and better than ever.
Loved seeing them just jam a bit!
Ian's guitar playing is always phenomenal
I like Battles in this version, no synth/keyboard and pre-recorded vocals. More interesting and focus with their instrument
This sounds like some old school Don Cab shit

Spoke to John last year when they were on tour, they were gunning to get back into the studio when the tour was done. Said it was long overdue.
BEAUTIFUL. NEED MORE BATTLES
This is the most interesting thing Battles has done since Ty left. Just Ian playing the guitar and reminding us that he's f***ing brilliant on the instrument (I ain't forgot about Storm & Stress) and John beating the drums into submission.
Am I really that old?! Holy shit.. Turned 38 today. Ioved these guys in 2010
I need this music to keep happening
two legends!!
yasss!! awesome !!!
It's so strange to see how time passes inexorably. Sometimes that gives us back the wisdom sound of these masters of the genre. Battles guys we
Incredible to see this. Was following Third Thursday for snowboards, then obviously transitioning to some of the bands you (and I love) so I went back through and Mars V! and everyone else, how incredible! Just went back through this whole series and love the swamp sessions as I went once and think it might be where music was born (along with frogs). Pinnacle snowboard being glass from Italy, Pinnacle guitar being anyone that enjoys it!
so badass
This is funnnnnn!
Oh hell yeah
Sounds great! Eager to see you guys in Montreal with Mr Bungle!!!
if their next album sounds like this it's probably going to be one of their best yet!

@michaelgraham9774 for this band..for me…yes. Lol I listen to a lot of noise and drone music that is completely devoid of any “hooks” or “beat” but when it comes to Battles I LOVE their catchy shit.

enjoy this a lot. when he really gets going it definitely reminds me of 80's King Crimson, both in the actual tone of it and all the overlapping progressions that make your head spin
john always giving 100% !!🎉
Dont understand the comments saying this is bad. This sounds better than most of what they had in the 2010s, and thats saying quite a bit
OMG, my dad rocks the cardboard
If you pull more DC sounds for the next album I'll love you forever. I mean I will anyways but those cross sticks sound like cardboard ☺️
that part from 2:00 on is insanely beautiful, very midwest.😍

I hate when drummers muffle the snare drum. It is always the best tuned wide open. I saw another video with John and he had a wide open tuned snare that sounded incredible.
One by one everyone keeps leaving this band. Pretty soon it's just gonna be a million pedals and a drum machine run by AI playing on loop.

Umm nah.
I love helmet, but this just reinforces my opinion that Ian needs Damon on drums. Battles is good, but I don't think they'll ever be as good as Don Cab. I will say that around the 5:15 mark John really starts getting into it, but everything before then would have been improved with Damon on the sticks.

I respect them both immensely, but this is just... not good.
Would love to play my 5 string bass under these riffs.
Jesus, I never realized that Dave Konopka was the real brains behind this band... This sucks.

Although to be fair, everything that they did with Dave was hyper composed and structured. Maybe not an apples to apples comparison since this is an improv session
@BrunoOfCanada

Not an apples to apples comparison; which is TOTALLY true. This is improvised, when it comes to writing stuff, Battles will sit down with the music and live with it for months on end, and THEN hit the studio. I agree with you to be completely honest. Dave, man... He was just something else. His sound and the stuff he did with the pedals, it was so freaking amazing. But I always think of Battles as a super-band, that wasn't really a super-band. You've got these four incredibly skilled and creative musicians, but only two of them had a prevalent trajectory prior to the formation of the band. I feel like I'm in a place where I can attest to what I just said. Ian is a guitar and synth genius, John is this minimalistic groove oriented drummer that is almost like a human metronome, Tyondai is a multi-instrumentalist music scholar, and Dave is a painter with a guitar and a really expensive pedalboard. If anything, I think every four of those guys was a "brain" of their own.
