The cardan-gear mechanism is invented by Girolamo Cardano in the 16th century.
It is used to convert rotation motion to reciprocating linear motion, without using linkages or slide ways.

O it is quite but it can't be used as a internal combustion engine crankshaft because the Piston moves through the center axis of the maingear.
