    Well,... I've just bought the 20th anniversary edition and it has the river and abbot included. About the abbot, it clearly says: "You may place a meeple in the regular way (not on the garden)." (from Dutch) So that means you cannot place a meeple on a garden, only the abbot. The way you seem to play it makes the garden exactly the same as a monnestry. It's seems to be a small difference, but it's not: now there is a much bigger incentive to remove the abbot on time so you'd not miss another garden opportunity and you have to be more decisive when you place an abbot on a monnestry for a short time or a meeple that's there until it's finished.

    Thanks for the video, it says in my rules that the normal starting tile is removed when the river expansion is used, and also i thought the river couldnt go in a u shape like you have it, it should essentially flow north to south from the start to end, although will have some turns left and righ?

  • @jornejongsma
    @jornejongsma2 жыл бұрын

    The actual reason that I was watching your video is that I was curious about the added value of the river and I'm stil not sure what it does to the game... At least it forces the layout in a shape so that it becomes a bit harder to play, I guess. By the way, we always follow the rule that you have to respect the edge of the table, and you will never move the entire layout to a more suitable pace.

    Hi, can you clarify a rule concerning the starter river expansion please. I understand that if you use this expansion, the original starter tile is removed from the game, but you kept it in. It probably doesn't matter but I want to avoid disagreements when playing with others. Also, and you might have been asked this before, can you extend farmland around the end of the spring and lake? My pieces look slightly different to yours and they look like they want to prevent you from doing this. Perhaps later additions have been redrawn to give a clear green space around them so that farms can extend around them. What do you think?

    There is an official response about the end lake tile and that the same farm does wrap round the lake. The other response I found was talking about a farmer can take "either river bank" which suggests they are two separate fields. Thirdly, another response talks about treating the river as if it were a road dividing. Most ambiguous yet as you say, logic would state that. I personally would find Farmer scoring very confusing if fields did cross rivers so I would almost WANT this as a house rule even if it wasn't official. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoy the rest of my Carcassonne series 😁

    How strange. I can't show a picture but here is the rulebook text regarding the gardens: When you place a tile with a monastery or garden, you may either place a normal Meeple or your Abbot Meeple. If you place an Abbot, you must place it on the monastery or garden you placed. Basically, abbot's can't be used for roads and cities but normal meeples can take gardens and monasteries 😁 Thanks for watching. I'll have to try out the digital version at some point 😁

    @@allaroundtheboard I don't think you can put a meeple in the gardens, just underneath the text you have put there under 3. scoring the abbot, at the bottom it says. As you can see, gardens are scored exactly like monastery, with the exception that only an abbot may be placed on them. It does kind of look like it contradicts itself.

    I still don't get abbots. Please explain, somebody! In the instructions in the box, under 'The Abbot', in 2 it states you may place either a meeple or abbot on a monastery or a garden (just as he says in this video). Then in 3, it says only an abbot may be placed on a garden.

    The Abbot is an optional rule not originally in the game. So i figure if you don't play with the Abbot (which you're allowed to retract and score points for any turn you choose not to place a meeple), then you can also play with gardens just by using meeples.

    Hi Rose, In case the answer is still not clear, the rulebook was a little confusing. When placing a tile with a garden (or monastery) you may place a meeple “as normal” that means following the regular rules of placement (which in this case would not include the garden itself, just the other features around it, perhaps the tile also has a city on it). the abbot has the additional ability to use the garden itself. I hope I made that clearer and not more confusing.
