I like that you don't berate and belittle the attempted field repair. So many videos would have been calling them idiots and morons for screwing up the part. Crap happens and it is really crappy when it's in a pinch to get you out of the woods or where ever you are.

I don’t know why, but your broken off bolt extraction vids are always my favorites... Maybe it’s the awesomeness of you doing something in minutes with the right tools that us mere mortals spend hours and hours attempting, sometimes only making it worse. Thanks for all the time you spend to capture this stuff.

EZ Out. one of the most deceptively named devices in existence. Like you said, they tend to wedge soft metal hardware tighter into the threads. Once they break off, they just compound the removal problem.

You really need to use the right size too... if you use one bit too small you wind up buried up to your neck expanding the whole length of the broken bolt or whatever. I have a set of like 25 of them and I think I’ve used it more as a perfect sized pin punch than twist out...

Here is a great tip taught by a old timer friend, when it is brass esp, use a saw blade and cut carefully in 3 spots. This weakens the broken pipe and at that point with a sharp punch tap it inward the pieces will fold inward and easy to remove one by one. They use to throw away shop air couplers because the brass couldn't be removed not cost effective till I showed them the air saw technique. If the item is critical do it by hand and watch closely for the sign of thread of whatever you are trying to save. Hope this helps someone out there.

Great vid, Adam. One tool that's not common in shops is a hemostat. This is a surgical instrument that's available in a bunch of sizes, made of stainless steel. They are the ideal 'small needle nose' plier and they have thousands of uses in the shop. A set of three in different sizes is remarkably affordable. Perfect for picking out drilled threads like this.

I used to be a mechanic. I always kept an assortment of extractor styles, these work like a charm when all goes well. You just have to know when to stop and try something else. You can feel them bite in, and then you will feel it seat in deeper - that is when to stop because at that point the screw is being expanded.

I'm also becoming a lesser fan of the so called easy out. I tend to break more of them off than I get the broken part to come out. I'm learning from you that it's better to stop and seek the skills of a machinist before you make things worse. Thanks for another great video.

Nice work. Reminds me of a cheap truck I bought. Coolant fitting at the back of the manifold had broken at some point, and the previous owner fixed it with steel putty!!!! 🤣🤣 It only busted off when I leaned the engine back to yank the transmission out of it. Once I had it back together and found the leak, I replaced it with a brass barb fitting and some old heater hose out of my scrap can.

I really miss the days when an engine could be connected to a car with 3, 4 or 5 wires (+1 for an after market tachometer) and two battery cables, and had a carburetor that you could modify with jets, boost power by advancing the distributor by rotating it just a touch opposite the rotation of the rotor The best car I ever had was a 1964 Ford Galaxie, with a 390 engine from a '67 Ford pickup truck, a C6 automatic transmission modified with a kit to shift faster.

As gramps used to say,"Patience, perseverance and being smarter than the problem will work every time", LOL The old German fellow(Tony) once gave me an iron block with 50 broken off studs of various sises and had me give him the threads as you have just shown all by hand ONLY before I could advance to teach me some patience. I will never forget that lesson till my dying day. Great job my friend. Oh how I wish for even a small mill now.

Another great video. Watching a master machinist at work. You can never have too many of these how to get it out vids. I had a neighbor bring me an exhaust manifold with a broken bolt. He broke an easy out in the bolt and then tried to tap through it and broke the tap in the hole also. He didn't tell me there was an easy out under the broken tap. I tried tig welding a chunk of metal on the tap and unscrewing it eight times and it wouldn't come out. I finally broke the tap with a metal punch and the easy out came out the back end of the hole. I was surprised to see a chunk of easy out fall out. He had even drilled the hole in the broken bolt way off center. I told them if they didn't know how to do it correctly, leave it alone. The machine shop didn't even want to touch it. Thanks for the vid. Dan

It's always good to learn something new. Especially when it is something you should have seen coming but probably didn't. In the event that a ez-out may be needed make sure it isn't a brass fitting. While it makes total sense now I would have never thought about it swelling up the fitting to be tighter. I had a rounded oil pan bolt that would not come out for the life of me I tried cutting a slot in it, vice grips, then broke an ez-out flush so drilling it out was near impossible. I was venting to a buddy who said hold on try this and handed me a set of craftsman Damaged Bolt/Nut Removers. They looked like little sockets with cutting teeth inside. Kind of a socket version of an ez-out. That bolt came out like butter. Those things are great. Since then I had a friend loose the key to her locking lug nuts and the nut was chromed and perfectly round. Those things even took those off. Neat tools.

Sweet job Adam! Ez-Out's (flute extractors) the bane of auto repair shops. In my shop the rule was to call me for help before resorting to using an Ez-Out. There are better "extractors" that can be used; a brand with a shoulder and another that has straight splines for soft metals like brass that won't expand the deeper they go, but need to be "tapped" in with like a 2 ox ball peen hammer. But usually I did what you did; drill the wall of the bolt or fitting with a left handed bit and hope it threads itself out what with the heat (and a quick shot of WD-40 to coll shock the shell of the fastener) created by drilling thru that broken fastener. (Sorry I can't recall the brands of those alternatives to Ex-Out, the plastic boxes or "kit bags" disintegrated many years ago. but the bits ate in a wooden box in my machinists tool box. Or when have to drill to the ID of the threads, "coil it" out with needle nose pliers as you did with that carburetor brass fitting. And if the threaded hole doesn't need to be "fluid tight", I cut a slot into the threads with a hobby file or mini-saw blade to open a slot to allow the "shell" of what is left to pop loose. A ~ 0.035" slot won't weaken the threaded hole enough to ruin what you're trying to save. Surely it is time consuming, but the customer pays for my effort towards saving an expensive component; one that may take weeks to obtain, while tie-ing up a shop bay for way too long and a customer's loss of use of their vehicle.
