CARBON FIBER for RC: HOW TO
Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль
Get that CF look for your Rc car or truck. Practice on scrap lexan if you are not comfortable to do on a body.
1. Tape off area to be CF'd
2. Paint body
3. Remove masking tape, NOTE you have the choice to spray tint on the INSIDE at this point. I spray outside because it helps me judge how much tint I need and I can clean it off with alcohol if it's too dark.
4. Apply carpet tape in diagonal pattern or straight pattern
5. Remove protective film on area to be tinted (outside)
6. Spray lightly
7. Remove backing on carpet tape
8. Spray carpet tape with black or gold Note you can spray the back of the carpet tape with any color you choose.
9. Apply decals to body and celebrate your work.

I gotta say this is the most realistic looking technique that I've seen...looks great!
this is actually the only video out if all that I watched that the carbon fiber looks authentic. All the other who use shelf and drawer liner are crap. Good job and thanks for the idea.
i have just started with rc cars , and about to paint my (lexan) body wanting to put a , carbonfiber look , this helped me out ALOT , Thanks a Mil dude . ! ! ! H O L L A N D ! ! !
Super Clean looking ...Awwesome job
This is the best technique for carbon fiber look in the entire world wide web. Much better look than using drawer lining.
I'm definitely gonna try this now whenever I start my drift build project. That CF look is BAWSS.
Thumbs up on the tip! Nice clean cf look!
what a beautiful supra my friend , thumbs up for you ;)
awesome build. The car looks like a real car on camera almost.
I'm not easy to impress and you just did it. Great work.
i was on a video spree and just randomly watched a bunch of tutorials and im gonna do this when i can afford a rc drifter.
Great work and good idea... I'm going to do that with my next scx-10 body
Excellent look, few suggestions for anyone else... 1. I tinted the inside of the body, not outside, can do either. 2. I sprayed the tape on one side (black) BEFORE I applied it to the body, lays in like vinyl and you will avoid bleeding paint into the edges. 3. I sealed the carbon with more smoke (can do clear). Looks awesome, tape can be repositioned a little without destroying the smoke and you can even use smaller pieces to contour around hood scoops, etc.
thats the coolest look for rcs im doing this to all my new bodies thanks for the great vid
Just finished my HPI R35 using this technique. Thanks for this vid. It came aout awesome.
totally impressed! props!
Nice job man. Can't wait to try this on my next shell. Thanks loads for sharing! :D
best rc carbon fiber look ive seen thumbs way up buddy
Looks great!
Awesome!!!!!! Thanks for sharing this is really cool :)
I did this on my supra and it looks dope! Looks so real this idea is smart thanks:) now I don't have to buy or order sheets of carbon fiber I could just buy a roll of double sided tape and use this brilliant idea :D
saw your shell and looks good. Glad I can help
Good job sir. Never would have thought of that.
that was awesome. your car looks sweet.,
BRILLIANT video!!! VERY nice of you to share dude!! Appreciated!! :)
i looked all over for that stupid tape! walmart, target, osh, lowes, home depot... i dont feel like waiting for a shipment so i tried duck tape drywall tape. the pattern is bigger but its worth a try. if it dont work then later i will buy another body and order this tape. really like your style for cf look. better than most i have seen. good job
Glad to help out when I can. Thanks for the view!
that is freaking awesome! must try!
This is pure genius! Might be copying this on my Supra
Wow that was some pretty good job
looks great!
That is hella sweet. I'm going to try this on my next shell.
I'm very impressed thanks for the tutorial.
nicely done. looks nice.
Awesome work
Awesome effect!
So awesome great video
absolutely. you can spray the inside with tint and then apply the tape. I choose to do it the other way because if you spray too dark you're S.O.L.. It's happened to me where it was too dark and when I tried to remove the tape, the paint came off with it. Either way is good. I used the Pactra window tint. Thanks for commenting
amazing job!!!!
If you're spraying the tint on the Inside, you can simply just use small pieces/squares of the carpet-tape itself on the Outside temporarily on different areas/body-panels, for tint-darkness reference and to help you see how much tint you're spraying on in the Inside, before you add the carpet-tape Inside after drying. (Outside carpet pieces is only temporary and will be removed later on along with the Outside protective film). Temporary carpet-tape on the Outside will be the closest tint-darkness reference... since it's the exact same material to be used later on in the Inside of body. Steps: - mask off windows and other areas/panels not to be carbon fiber'ed. - place small pieces/squares of carpet-tape on the Outside for reference, in different areas wanting to be CF'd (hood, fenders, doors, roof, quarters, etc.) - lightly spray tint on the Inside until you get the desired darkness (the temporary Outside carpet-tape pieces gives you visual reference) - place carpet-tape on the Inside, over the dried tint - spray solid black or gold over the carpet-tape on the Inside (or other desired color) - mask accordingly and spray any other non-CF body panels if you need to (this can also be done before the CF process as well, with desired regular-colored body panels) - remove the Outside protective overspray film (the Outside small pieces of carpet-tape are stuck to it..making it easy to remove along with the Outside film) - All done! :)
Clever and still good looking ;)
I had a good outcome with drywall tape i got at lowes. Same everything else as in the vid. Looks kick ass!
I would order it and wait a couple days for it. I would recommend applying two layers of the tape you got. apply so that the bottom layer crosses the bigger squares, this will give you a smaller pattern and add some depth to it too. good luck!
Very good video!
If your spraying the tint on the inside I found that a piece of white paper towel on the outside of the body helps you see how much tint your spraying on the inside before you add the carpet tape after drying. That's for anyone spraying on the inside instead of the outside with the window tint

Or, instead of white paper towel on the outside... you can simply just use pieces of the carpet-tape itself on the outside for a tint-darkness reference (it's only temporary and will be removed later along with the Outside protective film). Carpet-tape on the outside will be the closest reference... since it's the exact same material to be used later on in the Inside anyways.
Very cool bro
~ Sick Technique ~ !
Class thanks for the idea
nice build
Most lexan bodies come with an overspray film to protect the outside of the shell. That big orange sticker on the windscreen in the video is a good indicator that the shell has one.
At first when i started watching,i thought it was gonna turn out shitty..but it came out SUPER FUCKING GOOD.good work man..no more cf stickers for 5 bucks a pop that dont cover shit
you could spray the window tint under the body then place the carpet tape after it dries
Love the Supra!!!!
thanks mate helped a lot
cara parabens continue assim vc me ajudou tanto q vc nem imagina valeu memo
Davergt - What make are your carpet tape - I've been to numorous stores to no avail. They only have a sticky square design - Are the material you lay on some sort of glasswowen material or? Best regards.. EDIT: nevermind - found the Duck tape website by thinking about the logo on the roll :)
I'm gonna have to try this on my next SCT body
Thanks for uploading this ! I am so gona try this on my yokomo S13 !! Cant find that particular brand carpet tape in Australia, trying to find something with similar pattern.. =(
Cheers mate its awsome I'm defo going to give it a go and mayb try it with other colours. I wonder what fluro would turn out like instead of smoke. I'm going to practice with cheap spray paint 1st tho tamiya stuff is pretty pricey here 8 qwid 1ooml
You have to score the lines with a SHARP exacto knife first. He just left that step out of the video. I just finished a Tamiya Golf 24 body and, IMO, this method is WAY better than scissors. The lines are pretty clean, but any rough spots can be easily sanded down w/150 grit.
Pretty sick
Little trick that I used when doing graff and street racing. Warm bottles (spray cans , Nitrous) increase the pressure in the can and you get a better flow hence, a cleaner spray.
Thanks! drivers are from HPI trophy truck. I use velcro to hold the drivers on, this way I can use them on most my other bodies.
which Summerian demon did you invoke to be able to just tear off the wheels opening and bottom of the body ? was it costly ? because I'm really low on goats and totally out of virgin to sacrifice...

Scored the out line first.
Awesome!
I got it at Walmrt, I had some people locally that couldn't find it here either. I guess some stores carry it and others don't. good luck
I cant get my window tint to look glossy by spraying it on the outside. but if id spray it on the inside to keep the gloss of the body (then use the black on the inside as well) it seems like there would be not point in haveing the tint on the inside as well. correct?
Good job.
@HKST51R Exactly! youleave the carpet tape ON the body and spray the back. It's what gives it the fiber look.
really awesome, im thinking about repainting my body, and doing this.. quick question though. why the window tint? i know it makes it a bit darker, but does it not look good without it?.
this is the best video ive seen for doing carbon fiber.... how many coats did you use after you did the window tint?
Hey, if you screw up, the carpet tape makes it stronger!
Nice car just because of how u made it look i would go out and buy a drift car and try and make one exactly like that lol
What website did u buy that supra body off of that's my personal favorite and thank u Sooo much for showing me how to do that its great and looks fantastic
nice job and nice video to
It is not hoard at all. just make sure you tape off the areas good. Don't use cheap spray paint to practice. It really is as easy as it looks in the video. just take your time.
You are correct, I mentioned this option in description box.
Ok. When u sprayed the doors Black. I seen overspray onto the Blue paint and it was not taped off or I missed something. Anyway. Awesome. I do this method with drywall screens too on flat surfaces, but never thought of back of Carpet. I'm ripping all my Rugs up tonight !!!!!!

The clear film on the outside was only removed from the doors and hood. Nothing actually got to the blue paint.
nice job
Thank you !
I'm sure it would make the fibers "pop" a bit more. Gold is also a good color if you want more shine too. hooe you can share it when you're done.
Nice paint job.... Do you remove the double sided carpet tape when the process is done??.
such a sick tip! im working on my car now tomarrow in going to get some carpet tape thanks for the tip :0 ,and btw were did you get those sick racer car driver guys in ut car body!??? how do they stay? what are they? please and thank you :)
what is some low budget spray paint. name that I can use for rc shell painting. any info Greatly appreciated thanx
ok thanks alot and i already have Tamiya ps 31 smoke paint which is very simillar (by the look of your paint), do you have past experience with this paint, if so does it give the same affect you achieved with the Pactra window tint? and you idea is fantastic cant wait to give it a shot on my own body thanks for sharing with us.
@davergt what was the tinted paint you used on the outside of the body ? and also instead of painting the outside of the body with the tint could you not spray the inside of the shell leave it to dry then put the carpet tape over the top and spray the back of the tape black (or what ever colour) then that would save having to cut the over spray plastic
Correct. it's what gives it the fiber look
Sorry for the late reply, I used the hobby knife to start peeling it off. you are right, it can be a bit difficult.
Exactly!
Nice effect. I just bought a sheet of A4 sticky backed carbon fibre for 99p off ebay. Less work & a great effect, Yours looks great too dont get me wrong.
Thanks!
when you were removing the unwanted plastic, did you trim cut it, or just pulled it off with your hands?
Hello. Maybe stupid question. But what brand of body did he used? Because he didn't need to cut and trim the body but just push plastic of :). And what a really nice job :)
nice car, rc rules.
Thank you
Hey nice vid! Which Duck tape did you use? Is it Double-Sided Acrylic Tape ?.. heavy traffic/light traffic? there seem to be a few options on their website....thanks
I would say yes leave the tape on after as it will not be sticky any more due to the black/gold coat on the inside.
Sick!
Best video
ah i see. i plan on doing my entire body like this, do you think it would be a good idea to spray the tint from the inside, and then lay the tape down? its an hpi baja body, so its pretty big.
