Getting alot of comments that people stopped getting notifications of new Car Wizard videos coming out. Talked to a few other KZreadrs and found out that KZread is now taking you out of the notification loop if you miss out on multiple videos in a row. Make sure you guys watch every video, so they dont take you out of the loop. Outside of my control. Sorry guys!

The gas station octane numbers are different because they represent different values. 98 octane in Europe is comparable to 93 in the US, 95 in Europe is equivalent to 91 in the US. This is due to Europeans displaying the RON number (Research Octane Number) and Americans displaying the average of the RON and MON (Motor Octane Number).

Doesn't the US have 85 octane in some places?

Yes 85 is available in some states mostly in high altitude locations like Colorado, Utah, Montana etc. but for most states the regular is 87 octane. The reason why there is 85 in high altitude has to do with the lower air density making knock to be less of a problem with lower octane rated fuel. It’s also cheaper.

In Europe, the octane rating on the pump is simply the RON figure. America, uses the average of the RON and the MON figures. So 97 octane in Europe is roughly 91 Octane in U.S. 102 octane though is still higher than what I've ever seen at a public pump. Another interesting video Wizard!

There are two different laboratory test procedures to measure octane in gasoline - the Research Octane (RON) method, and the Motor Octane (MON) method. Most countries use one or the other, the United States uses an average of both, which is called the Anti-Knock Index (AKI). Germany just uses RON by itself. AKI produces a rating about 4-5 lower than just RON alone, but the gasoline itself is exactly the same, just measured differently.

Here in Europe we have a quite more strict car and motorcycle Inspection System. In Portugal, there we evaluate multiple systems in the car: a. Emissions (on both Diesel and Petrol engines); b. Suspension (if there is a significant difference between left and right, which can upset car's dynamic); c. Braking (if the braking performance is up to the standards require do go on the highway, as well as parking brake); d. Lighting (if the quantity of luminescence if adequate on all beam: dipped, main, and fog; as well as all lights being operational; e. Miscellaneous (horn, wipers, wiper fluid, windows, seat belts, etc...); f. Final undercarriage inspection (watching for ball joints, suspension in general, steering, axles, etc...). You must pass on all counts. There are multiple levels of failure severity: 1. You can go, travel at full capacity, and return within 30 days to be reinspected; 2. You can go, but the car may only transport the driver, and return within 30 days to be reinspected; 3. That vehicle shall not circulate on public roads, thus you will need to tow it, and return within 30 days to be reinspected; 4. If a big change on the drivetrain, emissions, or other took place, the vehicle shall go into as Inspection of grade-B - which everything is measured and compared to the OEM standards, namely the chassis. A new car does not have to go through an inspection for the first 4 years. Then there are two cycles of 2 years. After those initial eight years, it has to go through an annual inspection. Both passenger and cargo heavy-duty vehicles, both the vehicle itself and its trailer, have to go each 6 months. Motorcycles, with a displacement above 125 cm3 (0.125L or 7.627 ci), will start a bi-annual inspection after January 1st, 2024. The English MOT is a joke compared to the Portuguese Inspection. The German TUV is the more strict I know - mainly due to the German culture, but also due to the stretches of unlimited speed at the Autobahn (German highway system).
One thing to be mindful of on sales/value addes tax comparisons is the overall mix of taxes. In th US sales taxes are typically state and local with income taxes federal. States also tax income. One reason why a straight exhange rate price comparison from the local perspective gets tricky across countries. Relying on income taxes makes the prices look lower vs relying on VAT.
Thats right CarWizzard, your audience is global. Some will make a stopover in Kansas just to see your shop!

You can't directly compare octane ratings between Europe and the USA. Europe uses RON (research octane number) but the USA uses PON (pump octane number). See wikipedia for an explanation). Standard grade fuel in Europe is 95 RON which is the equivalent of around 91 PON in the USA. 97 and 98 RON is widely available too.

We have those same yearly safety inspections in Finland and they are pain in the @ss for old car owners. Everything must be spot on. If something doesn't meet the rules you have 4 weeks to fix it and show it again. If you ignore it your car is illegal to drive in public roads.Police have the database and automatic licence plate readers so you will get in to trouble really fast with car what didn't meet the inspection rules and owner ignored it. If police catches you they will take off your licence plates and it's time to call taxi because at that point car is out of the road.

Ya sometimes it feels like car wizard has an agenda against alot of german cars. This is just anecdotal information, but While i would say german cars as a whole are not excellent in terms of durability, Ford, GM and Chrysler are not any better. My friends families has had a few american made cars and i cannot say they are any better according to their experience. They are big gas guzzlers that do not offer anything special in terms of reliability. We have had a few germans (mostly Audi) and they’ve been better or the same in terms of durability. My first car will definetely be a European or japanese, even though american cars are great in alot of ways. I think people believe audis are unreliable because they cost alot to fix in the USA. That analogy could also explain why American cars are not seen as reliable in Europe, as they are more expensive to buy and fix here. If a repair cost is more, people will believe the damage was more severe, even if that may not be the case.

@@BigBearBjorna Exactly. I don't think Audi, BMW and Merc are pinnacle of reliability but that doesn't mean they are noticeably bad in general. I only have positive things to say from Audi and BMW I've owned. If they have spotless maintenance record then I wouldn't expected major problems. I don't know if Americans neglected maintenance or what's the deal but it is important to change oil regularly especially in small displacement turbo engines. @@betterbeavailable Pretty good experinces here too. i like audi alot, atleast from my experience. My dad has had his A6 TDI through 210.000 km, and while it has had its first few problems recently, it has been nothing major. My friends dad had an A4 that he sold at like 350.000km, which the new owner drove like 60.000km more before scrapping it. My friend recently picked up an old A6 from his grandma and while it has been driven very litely and has been maintained extremely well (basically only 10.000km on average per year) it is crazy how the car is in such great shape after 23 years and 200.000 km. The gear box is smooth as butter and the suspension and clutch feels great. like a new car Almost except for the rust. It is a gas guzzler though with the 2.4 V6 but it is great in every other way. My first will be something like a Volkswagen Golf 1.9 TDI, slow but apparently reliable and quite fun.
We adapt because we choose to! I'd like to see how that works out
Norway and Denmark have sales taxes on cars which can exceed 100% - the tax was determined based on engine size back in the day, but today it is determined based on exhaust emissions (at least here in Norway). This, and a large reduction in VAT, is why electric cars dominate 80% of new car sales here.

23:00 In Portugal, the warranty is 3 years for new goods and services, and 1.5 years for used goods. This is done to prevent scams, avoid OEMs decreasing product quality, and avoid the level of waste generated by low quality goods. We, Europeans, have a consumer protection mentality. Otherwise, people will be scammed left and right.
