Car Painting HACKS: No Primer Needed Over Clearcoat - Basecoat With Atom X16

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

We’re painting these two fenders and we’re going to show you that you don’t have to prime these parts to paint over it with another color.
We’re going to show you one fender which we sprayed base coat over and another fender which we primed it then sprayed gold base coat over.
We’re also going to be doing it a few different things on this door which I already did. Continue watching this 2-part series video. Don’t forget to Like, Share and Subscribe to my videos! Also comment below and grab your FREE 85-Page Auto Body And Paint Manual.
If you want to get a comprehensive guide on DIY auto body work and paint, check out the LearnAutoBodyAndPaint VIP Course.
Check out the video now!
Before body and paint, always make sure that your parts are clean. We are going to wet sand with 400-grit. You’ll be fine as long as it’s a wet silicone carbide sand paper.
I like to buy 8×11 sand paper sheets which I cut down to quarter sections. I fold them into a palm size so it’s perfect for wet sanding.
When you sand, don’t use your three fingers like how I show you in the video. Use your entire hand when sanding. Check out the demo!
The key is to get it flat looking. Another quick way to find out if you’re sanding over base coat clear coat is that if you see white while sanding. On the other hand, if you’re sanding over single stage, the color will be coming right off because there’s no clear coat on it. If this car is just single stage, you’ll see red coming right off at this point.
However, if we sand too much and cut through the clear coat, you’re going to see the red coming out of your hand because you’re getting into the base coat.
There’s a couple of dents but we’re not going to worry about that for now because this is not a dent repair video but mostly finishing. We can fix the dents later on and then repaint the car.
This is pretty much done with the 400-grit. That’s how quickly you can have it completed. This is ready to spray base coat over.
A lot of people ask what color they can paint over. It depends on your final color. You can pretty much put any color over a base coat, especially if you’re going darker. You won’t hurt it. If you’re shooting white over this, you need to make sure to spray a few coats to cover it. Put enough white to cover it.
In this project, we used the Atom Mini X16 Spray Gun with a 1.0mm tip size. The 1.2mm tip size is recommended for larger pieces for better material coverage. If you want to check out these awesome spray guns, head on over to Zoolaa now.
Continue watching the video to learn more to help you with your own custom projects.
It’s Tony from LearnAutoBodyAndPaint. Thanks everyone for watching and I hope you enjoyed this video.
Talk soon! Cheers!

When I joined your VIP program, around 6-7 years ago now I think it’s been, I only knew a little bit about auto painting and body work and had no experience at all doing it. I signed up with you to learn a new hobby really, but I ended up really getting into it and got good pretty quick. Within the first 2 or 3 months after I joined I was doing small repairs and paint jobs for people on the side. Within 2 years I rented out a little shop, built a paint booth in it and started doing paint and body work full time for myself. Literally everything I know about painting and body work I learned from your website. Just wanted to say thanks man, keep up the awesome work.

I like this vid. As a tech, I sometimes don't understand why people complicate paint repairs. This vid shows the simplicity. I like it. So many people I talk with don't seem to view clear coat as a paint, but clear coat is indeed a paint. So, roughen it up a little and paint right over it.

Good tip Tony. I recently painted a car for my first time using an air compressor and HVLP spray gun and tried painting with primer and without primer over the old colour of the car (scuffed and sanded) and also could not visually tell the difference! Saves time and money to skip the initial primer but just make sure it's prepped nicely and you're good to go.

Tony I think your spray bomb spitting and sputtering is from not shaking it up enough. think about how long they "sit" after being put in the can. Possibly days/weeks in the factory. On a truck for a day or 3-4-5. Then in a distrubition warehouse for f knows how long then on the self in the shop yu bought it from. Thats a long time for settling to happen. To help with knowing the gunk build up at the bottom has been suspended flick the bottom of the can with a small screwdriver. Little pocket one. Listen to the tone of the sound. Then do it again after you shake it. You will hear the difference. Then shake it for another 4-5 mins so it gets mixed into whats already suspended. When I know im going to use one I toss it in the shaker and set it for 15 mins. Spitting and sputtering is never an issue.

OK thank you so much! I've been thinking to myself when watching people do touch up videos, that the paint is overlapping some onto the old paint and sticking, and then I saw someone else do a scuff up with 1500 grit paper to half a hood as a blend in from the other half that he primed, and I'm going, "ok that's sticking..." I want to freshen up the paint on my dodge ram '01 with the same paint, so I don't want to ruin the color I already have with gray primer. I was going to try doing a scuff up with 400 grit and giving it a go with the dupicolor color match paint in the can and now after watching this, I'm totally going to do it! (then add clear over that).

I'm not looking for a Rolls Royce result, just a yellow door to match the rest of the car. The red door i've got is perfect in every way, apart from not being yellow enough... I might even go mad and sort out the roof which lost half of it's clear coat when i pressure washed one saturday morning.

Great video.good job... painting over paint is paint stacking and in the sun you will look down the side of the car and it will look wavy and look like it was painted in Tijuana...it's a no no... unless of course you paint cars in Tijuana that is

Things to consider before spraying over sanded clear without priming is how easy the color you're going to be spraying will cover. You wouldn't wanna spray a red fender with a white base coat obviously itll take more passes to hideout the color which will result in using more paint. Another thing to consider is the thickness of mils of paint on the surface if it has reached or borderlined the recommended mil thickness and you paint over it then the paint is subject to crack fade etc. and wont last very long

Hi Tony it's comforting to Know that I'd get a good finish , but how about in terms of strength? Will it Hold ? Will the base hold on the clear to last ?

How about a all out color change inside and out, down to the bare metal taking out dents by hand with the absolute minimum of any bondo and wrap it all up with a true show shine finish? I'm doing a 100% frame off restoration on a crew cab dually so I definitely have my work cut out for me. I know very little about body work but I don't believe in bondo or fiber glass repairs.

Tony - I read your book, incredible detailed information. And watched this video as well, my focused was the red side obviously. I have not ever worked on a car, but am inspired by you with the vast education you provide to all of us. I have a black car with relatively good condition except for some hail damaged on the hood and trunk as well. I decided to fixed the small dents with bon-do, prime it, etc. and paint the whole car over sanded clear. Since the car paint is still in good condition, how many coats of paint would you recommend? The clear is going to be 2-3 coats for sure. Thank you Tony!

Thank you. If your spraying base clear... I like to say spray enough until it covers which is normally 2-3 coats. Also 2-3 coats of clear. If spraying single stage, 2-3 coats med-wet. Good luck! 👍🏻

Great video answered some questions I had. I’m in the process of re clearing a peeling vehicle I been wet sanding the old clear coat and feathering it down to the base coat with 600 grit and itlooks like I will need to hit it with a sandable primer to get a even surface correct? Do I only prime around the feathered sanded areas? And do what u did sand off the rest of the panels clear coat with 400 or 600 and start blasting it with the base coat. Or prime the whole panel ,sand flat then base coat it

What about if you have deep scratched clear coat or if it was roughly sanded and you wanted to fix it and make it blend with the rest of the paint, would it be applicable to respray just clear? or would you have to repaint that area again

Great video been watching a lot of videos past couple weeks so glad I found this one. I have a question I can't seem to be able to find an answer to anywhere. I just painted the rear fender of my Harley-Davidson Fatboy using aerosol cans I ordered online with the OEM paint code. I did not get enough paint I thought two cans would be enough and for someone more experienced it probably would have been this is my first attempt at any kind of body work or paint. But my question is since I'm going to be waiting almost a week for my new paint to arrive can I just spray right over what I already put down or should I scuff it up first using 400 or 600 and if so should I do it wet or dry it may be important to know that my paint has metallic in it. It's Harley's Pacific Blue Pearl. Thanks!

Hey Tony,! How do you set up your garage to be able to breathe in there!? I just have single double door to open! I see you have your door open 1/4 way! Besides a fan how do you keep the bugs and crap in the air off the fresh paint? Do you use special breathing apparatus to breath fresh air if there is such a thing!? Can you give us a list of things a person needs to garage paint a car? Necessary stuff only!! Rich

So the trick is to lightly sand the previous clear coat to spray paint (primer, base and clear coat) over it? Can you blend a panel to repair a section of the panel without having to sand the previous clear coat? I see a lot of blending videos where the base coat is blended to surrounded areas of the panel without sanding the clear coat. Wouldn't the new clear coat seal the new base coat even if the previous clear coat wasn't sanded?

Quick tip for the sandpaper instead of folding it, just put duct tape on the back of it then you don’t have to fold it over and it’ll help even out where your fingers are when you’re standing. Also in my opinion I think the Eastwood 2K clear in a spray can is better than the spray max. Long story short I had issues with spray max but none with Eastwood. Just my opinion anyway thanks for the video.
