I trusted my Toyota dealer for 35 years, (Having owned 12 Toyotas in this period.) but all the staff changed recently, following retirements. last month at the MOT inspection, they said I needed £2,500 in work (Stirling). I took it to a recommended trusted independent garage, who told me there was nothing wrong with it!

LOL I do all the work anyway, just rebuilt th 454 chev ... it was finally chuggin after 311000 miles... lol most engines wont see 80000 lol built by me. thats why.. I built them to last unlike these manufacturers that build them to fail cuz they get more money for servicing then the do just replacing it.. why I also shun asian brands... they make engine's with crapalloy...... unhear of hear...at the drag strip we call em one timers,, cuz the engines fail normall after the first 2 runs 😕

Reminds me of my ex wife. She knew cars. Her first husband was an auto mechanic the the 95 Ford Taurus went in for VA state inspection. The shop broke things so they could fix them. Including the parking brake cable, which was obviously cut. When picking up the car she was told they wouldn't let her leave until the repairs were completed. She got the spare key and drove off.

I was a gas/diesel in the US Army for 8 1/2 years and got married in Germany. Once I got stationed in Ft. Stewart GA, my wife's car was acting up, and I didn't have the proper tools to fix it. She took it to a local mechanic for the work. It just needed a front-end alignment, and I was going in the field for a week. After I got back, my wife said the mechanic said her car needed the whole front suspension was in dier need of the work that needed to be done. She said she needed to speak to me, but they wouldn't let her drive out because of a state law not allowing hazardous vehicles on the road. She went a week without her car, and the mechanic was charging us $60 a day for storage. I totally blew up. I went to the JAG and told them. JAG took care of the whole issue. I had my SSG look at her car before we left, and he confirmed it. They also lied about that state law. There wasn't one. They illegally held her keys. Started the work with her authorization. Charging storage fees illegally. JAG contacted the local county attorney and had the mechanic investigated. That business was shut down in less than a week. The owners had to pay for the repairs of my wife's car from their competition and reimburse all the customers they overcharged. The owner had to file for bankruptcy, and all the employees could not work in their field for at least 1 year. Don't know why or how the state can do that, but it was George. Thank God I went to JAG because I wanted to practice my rifles accuracy in close quarters. I'm just joking. Because I was pissed.

When in the Navy, some of our best Seabed Construction Mechanics (CM’s) were woman and knew their stuff. My last command, my co worker who was one of those mechanics, bought her car in for recall. “Stealership’ tried to spin her in circles. She played along for a bit before putting them in their place and telling them how to fix it. (Wanted to charge like 1200$ for BS). As she worked under me, I made a note to base legal and the company took a major hit in sales and service once word got out. Hate crooked people.

I had a a scam pulled like this a few years ago. I took my car in to the dealership after years of the same problem and they told me they they had to take the engine out. I had it towed to a friends garage. They took out the crank wheel which had been moved forward one key at a time. They put in a new wheel and solved the problem. Less than $100. Find someone you trust.

I ONLY ONCE went to another mechanic, they tried to tell me all these things were wrong... I went because of a discount voucher. I insisted they ONLY do what was necessary. After that went straight to my normal mechanic, who confirmed all the things they said were crap. I also trust my regular mechanic because they actually show me what is wrong, they showed me my muffler was rusted through before they changed it, and you can watch them work clear as day in their staff room (they allow you to wait in it). Even after they moved and I moved, I still travel the further distance as I don't think I can trust any other mechanic.

I have been a mechanic most of my life. I would never talk to a customer like that. I've worked for unscrupulous shops in the past and have seen some terrible scams. I couldn't be part of that, so I moved on. I'm currently a school bus technician and take my job seriously. I don't have much interaction with the drivers, but when I do, I'm always courteous. Went for an oil change on my car a few years ago at a local shop. Everything was fine until I went downtown. The car (1999 Olds Delta 88) started to overheat. When she got too hot, I pulled over to let her cool off. After she let off alot of steam (literally), I popped the hood to see what happened. First thing I checked was the radiator cap; which was resting to the right near the battery and the radiator was open. The mechanic forgot to put the radiator cap back on after he checked the fluid levels. I had her towed to the shop and left a very stern message on their answering machine. They called me the next day to pick up my car. A local police officer was parked next to the office. I walked in and they demanded $250 for the repairs. I told them it was their screw up. It didn't matter. I was bullied into paying the bill or I wouldn't get my car back (hence the police outside). I never went back to them again. What upset me the most is the local police backed them up so "calling the police" is a chance you take, not a sure bet they'll side with you.

Yep, some auto shops are downright crooked. I'm an Engineer and they always try to get past me on numerous items. I ask Questions, I also have a hidden camera under my hood and under the car in 3 places. I caught an oil change guy at a repair shop cutting wires that went to my camshaft sensor. When they were done I asked for the Manager. He came out, asked what I needed. I asked him if it was normal practice for his mechanics to damage cars to drum up business. Of course he denied anything happened. Then I showed him the video. After lots of himming and hawing he tried to say the mechanic was trying to 'adjust' the wire to get it off of a hot portion of the engine. I then asked, did you actually look at the video or did you turn your head to NOT see what your mechanic did? He stuttered and I interrupted, and said; I have one hellofa Lawyer and he LOVES putting bad businesses OUT of business, do you want to Play that game? He then said there must have been a mistake, No I said, it was Intentional, the video does not LIE. I told him, you might as well close now because after my Lawyer gets done with you none of you will have a job and I will force sale of the business to pay my legal fees and damages. End of story, it took about 2 years but they are GONE!

A little over the top but not far from the truth. My wife was told she needed a new serpentine belt because hers was rusty. I had just replaced it along with the idler pulley not too long before she took it to the shop. When I took it back there was no mention of the belt. It really is hard to find a shop that won't try to screw you one way or another.

In fact, I realized very young that the majority of my teachers and profs were in fact WOMEN! Guys who treat women like that and act like fools, are in fact, very insecure within themselves. They are the very ones who got the *INCEL* movement going! Thanks to all the women who have helped me become a success.

My older brother quit Goodyear after the 3rd time being told by manager to increase the problems on customer's vehicles. Goodyear like many other service garages will bend in the brake pad wear indicator to make the brakes squeal well ahead of time that the pads actually need changed. The overwhelming numbers of businesses ONLY see us as a number and dollar amount. Their motto is "Rip off the customer but let anyone rip us off"

A mechanic worked on my car and didn’t fix the issues and charged me too much. His name tag said Fluto and he worked in a local auto shop. I complained to the owner and he just laughed. Then Fluto started laughing, too. Then the other mechanics started to laugh. Everyone was laughing. How rude they were. I was so sad I began to weep. Then everyone laughed even harder. I drove off and never returned. What a horrible place.

Had to stop for emergency as i was driving south from upstate NY, and happily i pulled up to a reputable place. After i told my story of what the car was doing, the mechanic went to take a look. An older woman customer sidled up to me and said i came to the right place, good honest mechanics. After looking at the car, a part which they didn’t have had to be ordered overnight. I’d have to pay for the extra shipping. Luckily a motel was only a block away, reasonable rates. My adventure and repair cost less than $200. I had just helped a motorcyclist before i had to pull over myself. I like to think of it as good instant ‘carma!’ 😉

I was going to a local garage for over 20yrs and the owner used to be fair and now is considering retirement ,He has become the one hit wonder by that I mean he charges as much as possible and doesn't care if that customer comes back! My son took his car there for a complete brake job! He was quoted $3300 said all 4 rotors and pads and had 2 seized calipers had to be changed! I purchased the rotors and pads myself there was nothing wrong with the calipers! I did the brakes in my garage for a total of $380 Disappointing as I had been taking all my vehicles to him for over 20yrs and trusted him but sadly people change!!

I had a lady friend have a mechanic tell her that her car was BROKE. Nothing more specific than that. Her brother went to see him. Her car was fixed immediately. A few hours later he called to say that her car was ready. He also called her to complain because her brother somehow put the fear of God in him.
