Here is the issue with extended oil change intervals. Vehicles burn some oil and if you're the average soccer mom who doesn't check her oil going 10,000 miles without having the vehicles oil checked is a problem. You don't need to change oil every 3000 miles but you do need to check your oil.
My owners manual has 2 oil change intervals, one for normal use and one for "severe duty". The severe duty is 3000 miles. Oil is cheap, engines and labor are expensive. Has anyone damaged their engine by too frequent oil changes?
Wrong wrong wrong! As someone who worked at a Toyota dealership I can tell you that the manufacturer recommended oil change suggestions or a bad thing! They always recommend going farther between oil changes in order to keep the cost of ownership down during a short amount of time. That doesn't help you later down the road when the car is out of warranty and it starts burning oil tens of thousands of miles prematurely. My 2000 Camry has a recommended 7000 MI interval between changes however the 2.2 L 4-cylinder had a terrible reputation for building up sludge as did the same engine in the Solara and the V6 engine in the Sienna. I have never exceeded 5000 miles between oil changes and my Camry now has 415k miles with the original engine. They also suggest automatic transmissions with lifetime transmission fluid but that only means the lifetime of the transmission not the lifetime of the car. Other cars like Subaru's have issues with high oil consumption due to a poor design and by the time you have the engine oil service you could be down about 3 quarts. Ask for nitrogen in your tires it's a very good idea especially in the southern states where the weather and roadways get extremely hot. My General altimax Tires have had the same nitrogen and keep the same pressure with no change for about 5 months. I still check it monthly but regular air only lasted about three weeks. I trust and love Consumer Reports but they are off the wall with this report! Nobody puts synthetic oil in their car to improve the performance they put it in to protect the engine parts for a longer. Of time
This video assaulted my intelligence
I would have to disagree about the oil change. Oil companies want you to buy more oil but car companies want you to let the oil go so you will buy more cars. Oil is cheaper than engines.
10,000 mile oil changes will ruin your cylinder walls and clog your oil rings!
I aam a big fan of CR, and have subscribed for years. However, I wish these videos were a little more professional and a little less goofy.

I agree. I can’t quite figure out the audience for this style. It isn’t me.
I think I lost brain cells watching this
Public schools should honestly teach basic car maintenance along with Driver’s Education in classes. At the the end of the day: take the time to read and follow your manufacturer’s owner’s manual

The number of people getting driver's licenses each year keeps going down. This is especially true for younger would be drivers. You should start with your car's manual, but many have erroneous information. This is even true for luxury vehicles like BMWs. Transmission fluid is not a lifetime fluid. 10,000 miles for an oil chnage is typically regarded as a bad longevity strategy.
Absolutely true! Thanks for sharing this!
Great info thx 4 sharing!
I have to say, synthetics do seem to have better cold start performance if you live if very cold climates. Great video though. Can’t believe people still change their oil at 3k miles blowing money away

I change mine at 1500 to 2000 miles
Show me a computer that says 10,000 miles for an oil change and I will show you and engine that cannot make it to 200,000 miles. No computer I have ever seen recommends that even with exclusive highway driving at 65 mph. Tends to show at most 7500 and for me the most I can get is 6000 with a majority of highway miles - but my engines last 200,000 or more.
Sorry guys, care to provide any research or evidence to your claims? Pretty graphics doesn’t prove a point, this was just ridiculous and not what I expected.
some cars can go 5,000 or 10,000 miles between oil changes. Check your owner's manual
About the oil not aiding performance is True but in a performance setting it AIDS in cooling the engine which can be an issue if the engine is performing at the maximum capacity.
I think you folks at CR have misread your audience. To my mind, this video and at least one other I've seen recently smack of trying too hard to be entertaining. For some audiences, that's surely appropriate. For the CR audience I fear you might be pushing production values a lot harder than you should.

This new video series is cheesy.
Fact: As the engine ages, it gets dirtier, thus oil changes need to be done more frequently
Proper tire protection is absolutely vital to extending the life of your tires..... using a waterbased UV protectant is equally important. Silicone based protectants (like the one in the video) shorten the life of rubbers and plastics.
As a technician, and seeing real world effects of how and when people maintain a veh. I recommend if you have a turbo veh change it every 3k with full synthetic. If you have a naturally aspirated car change every 5k with synthetic blend. Auto manufacturers have these really extend oil change intervals like 10k miles just so they can say the veh has a lower cost of ownership. Remember a few oil changes is always cheaper then a new engine!
Short n useful. Thanks
well.. actually , No, in some cars at least, u do not want to do only what the car's owner's manual or computer says: e.g. Bmw's and other euros in recent years have gone from 10-15K (even more per car's computer in some cases), to 6300-9300ish miles , or one year----and per many mechanics of good repute, this applies to many older models as well, plus, as engines age, they need more frequent oil changing, vs when younger. So, not all is what it seems.
OMG! This is SO WRONG!!! Cheap oil will NOT give you the same protection as good synthetic. Stop this crap, CR!

@@farren7254 Check again at 1:00. They talk about the cost of oil, and that you should get cheap oil as it "takes money out of your pocket" with the more expensive oil. The way it comes across is not very good.
I’ll always use tire protectant. Not because it “protects the tire”. I like the shine it has, just making the car look cleaner and less dull than tires that don’t use any tire shine
"expensive oil" often isn't really more expensive if you mean the Mobil 1 or Pennzoil Platinum tier.
Many newer cars have been using 0W-20 oil for a few years now (most notably Honda and Toyota) for fuel efficient reasons and it's full synthetic oil. If you own a newer car especially a Honda or Toyota, you're probably going to have to use synthetic anyway.
The oil is not expensive and is the most critical thing that you can do for delaying major maintenance. I just stick to the shop's frequency, in my case 5000 kilometers.
If you have a questionable TPMS sensor fill that tire with nitrogen. If you live in a cold climate you want to run a full synthetic. If you plan to keep your vehicle for 100's of thousands of miles, run a full synthetic. That 2019 Accord calls for "Premium-grade 0W-20 detergent oil with an API Certification Seal on the container" not all cheap oils have that API certification.
Oil - oil has a mileage standard and timeline standard. Oil detergent, lubricate and ability to hold dirt only lasts so long.

i just go by my oil life sensor.
My car says 3000 miles though / 6 months though
If you start your car and drive off and do not shut it off for 100 miles of highway driving every time you drive it then 10K miles is good. Start subtracting from that for stop n go driving and short trips and most people who care about longevity and lower long term costs meed to do oil service at 5K. If it is a timing chain engine 10K is rarely a good practice. Engineers do not set the long intervals, marketing people do. If the car has any factory paid maintenance then there is a profit motive for lengthened (fewer) oil changes.
1. spend the money on oil instead of an engine 2. follow the tire rating psi not the car because if you change the tire brand then the new brand will have a different rating

The tire gives you max cold pressure. The vehicle chart gives max comfort pressure. My pressure changes between on-road and off-road applications.
0:25.... Bull Poop. The dealers kept putting stickers in my window that said every 3k. It wasn't until the put one in that 5k and then 10k and then back to 3k. I then looked in the manual which said once a year or when the car said to. 20 yr old me should really have read that manual sooner.

My dealer puts the correct mileage on the sticker. In my case, it's every 5,000 miles
Honestly if you didn’t know these, then maybe...
did the guy on the right lose his glasses?
I don't think nitrogen in tires should be avoided it is less sensitive to temperature fluctuations than Oxygen and its impact on tire pressure. However I wouldn't pay extra for it.

Normal air is about 80% nitrogen, so what does 100% N get you?
@JakeSDN
5 жыл бұрын
@@5stardave Less water. The water is air help tire degrade from the inside. Most people wait until they absolutely have to cha ge their tire.
Come on, most people doesnt even know what is pinging or how does it feel. Just put premium in so they will no ruin the engine by fuel issues. Gas is still cheaper than an engine. If you really want to save a a buck by using regular, you should not drive a car, use your foot or take the bus instead.
Thanks for sharing this amazing video.
10,000 between engine oil changes is way too long. Depending on your driving 6000 to 8000 is best. In this cast forget what the owners manual says, they want to sell you a new car.
Synthetic oil doesn’t give better performance? Say that to my (and many others) years of UOA results.
@theevermind

It's all about what you define as "performance."
Have you consumer reports seen motors that have followed to manufacturer recommended service intervals? More than likely not, for you guys sell the cars with low miles. Take a look at Toyota’s piston ring campaign pertaining to oil consumption. I will agree that 3k intervals are a thing of the past. However a 10k interval is in a perfect world condition. And no car is driven in a perfect world scenario. It’s cheap insurance to get an oil change.
Why block automakers emblem, you can clearly tell who it is
Once a year or 5k miles. The Mfr isn't going to buy you a new engine for following long intervals between oil changes because the vehicle will be long out of warranty when it blows up. See BMW.
I would only chance changing oil at 10k if it was a Toyota. But I would change my oil ever 5k on something like a garbage Chrystler engine, or a BMW. If I'm planning to keep a car for a long time that is known to not be as reliable, changing the oil more often is on of the best ways to make the engine last longer. Or, just buy a toyota.
Sorry. Change your oil and filter every 5000. Engines cost serious money
Generally I love what you have to say, but you are destroying your credibility by advising people to follow oil change intervals as specified on the dashboard or manual. People doing that is why engines fail later on, especially variable valve timing components and timing chains. You say oil change places want you to buy oil, they do, car manufacturers want you to buy a new car.
I am a subscriber to CR an I like most of their stuff but this video isn’t great. Oil is the blood of the engine and cheap oil and a lack of changing oils at the proper intervals can send an engine to an early grave. Premium brand oils are are significantly better than cheap run of the mill oil that is offered in the market place. I had a boat with a 4.3 Litre GM engine in it. The specifications called for straight 30 weight oil. At the beginning of the season I changed the oil but I was in a rush and unable to find a premium brand of 30 weight oil so I used a major retailer brand 30 weight oil. When I started the engine and idled the engine on the driveway the engine had 5 PSI less of oil pressure. I changed the oil again after sourcing Penzoil 30 weight, ran the engine and the 5 PSI returned. I guess it is all about your comfort level and how long you intend to keep your vehicle but for the few dollars difference I will always maintain my vehicles well.
No ture
The tire pressure is a bit wrong. The sticker on the car is assuming a similar or the same tire as came on the car. That may not be the case.. Need to use some common sense and judgement here.
That’s not a Honda Accord guys
I love this type of video from Consumer Reports.... please keep making more of these!
Such a shame that people still believe this stuff
Your oil segment did not mention matching oil specifications when talking price. Probably not the best way to leave that discussion.
I ceased reading consumer reports years ago. It seems, and I believe they cater to people that can't think for themselves.
Nitrofill works much better than plain air; the pressures stay much more stable.

s2mctaylor they are going over confirmed myths, and it’s not a “how to maintain your car” video.
or own a car for dummy :)
I usually like your videos. But you didn’t shatter any myths. Just gave your opinion or read the instructions. No testing was show here. Lame.
you forgot tire rotation is also not necessary. the best tire´s with the most tread alway´s on your rear axle, because the rear keeps you in your track.
Got it! Change oil every 30K miles, and tires don't need air. :)
1) You need to change the oil every 3,000 miles: Myth Shattered (follow your car's owners manual). 2) Expensive oil = better performance: Myth Shattered (follow your car's owners manual) . 3) The correct tire pressure is written on the tire: Myth Shattered (follow what's on your car's door jamb) (or it should be in your car's owners manual) . 4) and 5) Nitrogen and tire protectant is necessary: Myth Shattered (just use regular oxygen when airing tires and tire protectant will just wear off immediately).
