This technique has relation with optical illusion. Object looks smaller as the distance from eyes increases. The exact marking may vary from car to car depending upon its shape and size..but once someone figures out left and right tires track from driver seat everything else becomes spontaneous

Use a tape to measure centre and stick a tape for reference atleast for time being.

Yes. For SUVs you need to mark the reference point somewhere near the middle of the visible part of bonnet
