Car door won’t lock, diagnosis and troubleshooting

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

This video is a demonstration of conventional methods used to prove an electrical device is faulty before replacing it. Circuit testing and voltage drop testing are shown. After proving the part is faulty we swap out the left rear door lock actuator on a 2000 Chev Suburban. This is a followup to a video done three months ago where I temporarily solved the problem with lubrication of the sliding parts. There is more detail in that video regarding the structure of the inner door panel and a few wiring diagrams you might want, here.

If you watched the initial video on the sticking door lock, you’ll see that straight lubrication of the mechanism did the trick. Now, three months later the actuator failed. So, this week I had another go at it, and I made this second video with emphasis on electrical diagnostics. It’s likely the actuator was on its way out three months ago, but since it worked after lubrication I didn’t feel inclined to replace it then.

@@happygirl2667 Do you mean the headlights? If so, it may be the daytime running lights relay. I did a video of that in a Dodge Ram, search "headlights won't turn off". If the interior lights won't turn off, it may be a different issue. Some vehicles will have the cab lights turn on when you rotate the knob that controls lights. Or, if the switch that detects an open door has failed, the car may be misled into leaving the cab lights on. Wires that go through the door experience repetitive strain, so a broken wire at the point of movement is worth considering. The biggest problem here is it will drain your battery overnight, so you need to somehow unplug those lights so your battery isn't run down. Good luck!

Awesome coverage on this video. I was able to free up the door lock actuator that was stuck from just buildup of corrosion. The electrical work fine. I job tool only about 30 minutes to complete, including WD-40 and rocking the actuator back and forth to get it to work again. It all went back together fine and works well. :)

Excellent video! One of the few that are audible. Also I like that you don't show real-time unscrewing of fasteners. I have a 99 Silverado. I replaced the whole latch/actuator assembly on the passenger side. No click at all. Driver's side actuator works fine. Passenger side won't click from driver's switch or passenger side switch. When I test the wires, the orange wire lights but not the gray. In your video you test them by putting ground to one then positive to the other. 1-Do you switch the wires to make the actuator go the other way? 2-Where is the ground in this system? (Mine was working but the lock/unlock motor seemed to be too weak to move the lock/unlock, that's why I bought a new one)

  • @spelunkerd

    @spelunkerd

    6 жыл бұрын

Yes, these little motors go in reverse when hooked up in reverse, and that is how the 'door lock' and 'door unlock' relays swap grounds. You need a wiring diagram, I thought I included a snapshot of the diagram in one of my videos. BBB industries offer free wiring diagrams online with a lookup feature, I use alldatadiy which is inexpensive and useful. Because of the reversible feature, the wiring for these is complex. The switch side of the relay on the wiring diagram describes the ground as G-203, but at that point it is probably intact because you have function on the opposite side. G-203 is on the pillar to the left of the steering wheel, hidden underneath the plastic of the dash. You could start by testing the actuator with a battery and wires to be sure the new device is good. With repetitive movement of the door, it is common to lose contact on a brittle wire in the door loom or around sharp edges and points of movement. The other point you could investigate is to find those two relays in the fuse block and be sure you've got power and ground there. There is also a fuse for these devices in in the fuse block. If you can't find a wiring diagram, send me a personal message on my channel and I'll send back a snapshot of the diagram for my 2000 Suburban, but don't assume yours is identical unless you own the same vehicle. Good luck!

Yeah, when it worked fine with just lubrication, I wondered if I would only get a few more miles out of a dying horse. Even in retrospect it would have been hard to condemn the actuator. That's the great advantage of being an amateur, since a pro would have had to double charge for labor. You can see why they might replace suspect parts, independent of any financial motivation by the shop.

I'm no professional, I've never worked on a Peugeot, and I don't know what is wrong. That said, I'd start in the owners' manual to see if your can adjust that feature. Some vehicle options allow user modification, though modification of this seems unlikely. The next step is usually to go to the scan tool and to the dealers repair manual. Unfortunately European manufacturers don't respect the same obligation that dealers in North America follow, so you may have trouble finding a dealers repair manual. It is normal for vehicles to automatically lock all doors when the vehicle reaches a set speed, and it is possible that a similar unlock feature is offered in some cars. I've never seen that. If there are no trouble codes and I didn't find clues in the dealer repair manual or from a TSB search, I'd check to see if my scanner has bidirectional control of that feature. If it does I'd see if it works fine. Failing to find a cause I'd probably check for power and ground at the switch, and do a drop test on the switch power and ground lines to look for areas of corrosion or excessive line resistance. It's probably worthwhile to look at the wiring harness as it goes through the door, looking for a wire that is chafed or broken. If all that is good I'd examine the switch board to look for solder cracks, bad capacitors, dust bunnies inside the switch or board, corrosion, or signs of excessive heat. Good luck!

Hi, fantastic the way you explain things in detail. I wonder if you can lead me into how to go about sorting this problem. I live in Australia and my son has a 2013 Toyota Corolla ZRE182R Ascent Sport. All of a sudden both front doors stopped lock and unlocking with either of the remote keys. Both back doors and hatch lock and unlock fine with the remotes. Also I have noticed when I use the remote to lock the back doors and hatch the turn indicator does not flash, however, when I use remote to unlock, the turn indicators flash twice as per normal. To leave the car it has to be locked with the normal key which locks all doors and hatch. I took the car to my Auto Electrician who said both front door actuators were gone. It is possible but I think unlikely as both went at once.

You've made the first important step, describing the problem in detail by thoughtful observation. I don't have any special knowledge of Toyota. For all the vehicles I own, I buy a subscription to alldatadiy, which gives access to dealer service bulletins and wiring diagrams for about $40 for 5 years. No guarantees they would describe how to fix this, but you might find more info on what that double flash means. If you want a free wiring diagram, bbbindustries here on the web offer some. I agree, since the key locks both, it seems unlikely both door lock actuators are bad, but common problems like a bad actuator can present in unusual ways. Since you get a double flash, I'll guess the signal is getting to the car, but for some reason it won't lock. Does it lock normally with the drivers side switch inside the door? I would start the investigation the same way I did here, opening the drivers door, testing for power and ground, and probably use a high amperage test light or headlight bulb to verify the actuator wires can carry sufficient current. Possibly the switch is bad, some of these kind of problems respond to lubrication of moving parts and cleaning of switch contacts. Good luck!

Gotta work through the diagnostic pathway as shown. A quick way to tell if power is getting to the actuator is to turn on an overhead cab light, then press the lock button and see if the light dims. Most of the time you just need to replace the bad part, such as the actuator.

Yes, many newer systems require initialization, because many have their own little computer built into the door switch, and they communicate on a bus line to reduce the number of hard wires going to the door. Any time you remove the battery you need to reinitialize the window and door locks, so I would start with that first. The procedure is described in the owners manual, you run windows up and down and lock doors in a sequence. There is likely also an initialization required for the key fob, and I would check your owners manual for that. The key often needs to be in the ignition to do those procedures, for obvious security reasons. You may want to check the battery on your key fob.

Replacing parts like the stereo might trigger the security system to close things down. I would check the usual things, look at fuses in case the stereo melted a fuse as it burned. Check for diagnostic codes, maybe remove and replace the neg pole of the battery hoping it will reset. Some security systems require you to input a stereo code when replacing the stereo or temporarily disconnecting the battery. Owners manual or dealer service manual will have more specific advice. I use alldatadiy for dealer service manuals, although Mitchelldiy offer a similar program.

Gee, if you can't even manually open the door from the inside, it's a serious problem. You need to clearly understand how that manual opening mechanism works. You may need to take the opposite door off so you can understand how it comes apart and how it works. Many doors have a single screw that holds the handle cover on, and if that is removed you may be able to reach and pull on the steel rod the manual handle moves. Most of these mechanisms have a small plastic retaining device that holds the steel rod in place, so it may be a simple fix once you identify the problem. In a worst case scenerio you might have to sacrifice the inner door panel, finding a replacement from a junk yard later. Good luck!

  • @spelunkerd

It's normal for cars doors to automatically lock once when the vehicle achieves a speed of about 10 miles/h, it is a safety feature to prevent doors accidentally flying open when involved in an accident. It should happen once only, and after that the doors should all be locked. I think that may be a feature you will be able to turn off if you want, you could check your owners manual. If you have a repetitive locking activity, it suggests your vehicle is not sensing that all doors are locked. The battery drain is a more specific issue, likely due to "parasitic drain", or perhaps a problem with a battery that cannot retain a charge. I did videos on both of those problems. It sounds to me like you have two problems. I would pursue the parasitic drain issue first, probably starting with a check to be sure your battery is able to hold a charge while off the car by formal battery testing. To check for parasitic drain, you want to put an ammeter on the battery after shutting the car off, looking for a drain of current even after the computer goes to sleep. It usually takes about 20 minutes for that to happen in most cars. Look for draining current of more than about 30mA, then use voltage drop across fuses to narrow down the search. Note that the most common cause of parasitic drain is aftermarket parts, like anti-theft security devices or other devices left on. It could be as simple as an interior or glove compartment light that won't turn off when the you shut the vehicle off. Good luck!

Hard to tell without looking at it, but the way to approach it is shown in the videos. You could start by lubricating all the sliding parts, take the inner door off and look for mechanical problems, and look for water intrusion. Failing that I would check for voltage drops in the wiring, and verify that the voltage reverses at the actuator connector when you press the switch to unlock. If it doesn't the problem is in the switch, if it does then the actuator is suspect. The other way to check this would be to reverse the two wires going to the actuator and see if the problem reverses to difficulty locking. If it does, the problem is in the switch, if not, the actuator.

If you're talking about the remote entry fob, that's a completely different puzzle. You need to first decide whether it is a problem with the car or the transmitter. Usually you can do that by using the keypad on the drivers door to see if the other doors respond. The transmitter has a battery, if you're lucky the problem will be solved by replacing the battery. If the problem is inside the car, then you make yourself a good witness, study the problem and learn how they work. Most cars are like shown here, electrical motors connected by a control board, but older versions were vacuum controlled.

I'm guessing you'll want a high level scan tool with live data to help decide if the issue is in the remote, the module, or the switch. If you have a second remote showing the same issue then it's either the switch or the module, sometimes they are integrated together. If you can manually operate the lock with the switch inside the car, it could be either. Of course listen to hear if the actuator is trying to close, maybe the mechanism just requires mechanical lubrication.

When door locks become unreliable you have to think twice every time you lock your car, really annoying! The way a pro would approach this would be to remove the inner door panel, back probe the connectors and see if the door lock actuator is getting a signal to lock. If there's no signal the problem is a bad switch or the circuit board. In your case I doubt a wiring problem because the reverse flow unlock signal works fine. If a good signal with good current is evident on load testing, then the problem is in the door lock actuator itself. As a double check you can test the actuator directly with 12V DC, all of those tests are shown in the video. If I had to guess about your repair I would guess it is still in the door lock actuator or a mechanical problem from inadequate lubrication. With more power needed to lock the mechanism, it wouldn't be unusual for one direction to fail first. However there is no point to guessing when diagnosis verification is so simple. This kind of repair is bread and butter for most shops, and often is not terribly expensive. So, if you are uncertain about your skill set, tools, or time, I wouldn't hesitate to get advice from a pro. Good luck!

Thank you very much sir! You just saved me from buying the whole door panel switch which costs about $400 from the local dealership. The local toyota dealership here told me that the problem might be the panel switch without even diagnosing the problem.

When the manager is asked for a quick estimate without getting a chance to make the diagnosis, they want to avoid the shock if it turns out to be a worst case scenario. By quoting a high price and then maybe coming in lower, the client is not so unhappy after the repair is done. So, take any estimate as an honest guess, usually on the high side. The other problem is the fact that getting parts can take a few days. In my example video I made the diagnosis, then replaced the door panel and waited for a part (from RockAuto in this case) to come in the mail. One thing you don't want to do is start replacing normal parts without doing the testing, that can be an expensive mistake. It may well be the switch.

First step is always to get a wiring diagram from somewhere. Old models were strangely vacuum actuated, which led to weird problems, but most these days are electrical. These circuits are surprisingly complex. For something behaving strangely I'd start by verifying that I have a good ground and power, with some kind of drop test to prove there is no voltage drop along the way. Broken wires along wire looms where repetitive movement happens are an easy fix if you are lucky. When problems seem to be generalized the trail often leads back to the multifunction circuit board, usually inside the drivers door switch.

It sounds like the door lock actuator on the driver's door is going bad. I would expose the actuator, check for power and ground at the actuator, and verify that your wires can carry significant current with a light bulb or voltage drop test. If you're still uncertain about the diagnosis you could wire it directly and see if it locks with 12V directly applied while the rest of the wiring is unhooked. Occasionally I've seen the driver's door fail to lock when there's some other door (or even the hood latch) that won't shut or lock, as a warning to the driver there is something wrong.

Sounds a lot like mine in the example shown, the diagnostic process should be similar. You need to decide whether it is mechanical or electrical, whether it is a bad wire connection, broken wire, bad switch or a bad actuator. Blown fuse is unlikely because evidently other door locks work. When you have the panel off you can use the switch to see if it moves at all, and whether lubrication of the slides helps. If no movement, check for power and ground appearing as the switch is pressed, test the wires with a small bulb to be sure they can carry the current needed to move the actuator, and look for green crusties that appear at bad connectors exposed to water. You can get new aftermarket actuators at parts dealers like Rockauto, 1AAuto, and many others. This repair is simple enough that you don't usually save a ton of money by getting a pro to do it, so if you're lacking confidence with your skills I wouldn't hesitate to ask for help. Good luck!

It seems to be a polarizing topic, but as you say I am on the positive side of that issue. Quick and easy wins the day. In his videos Dan Sullivan is a salt of the earth guy, and I feel sad that his idea didn't ultimately fly from a financial perspective. It was a great idea. Part of it may be the way the LoadPro was packaged and marketed, with no circuit drawing showing how fundamentally simple the device is. I'm guessing he didn't want to show people how easy it would be to make one on the bench. The down side to that approach was the way it might have left people with a 'black box' kind of misunderstanding. I believe the new Power Probes contain a built in load tester, and understandably one wouldn't be able to copyright load testing in general. Thank you for stopping by!

If you don't have any experience with auto repair, door locks are a difficult way to start because the wiring can be so complicated. As an owner the easiest thing to check is fuses, so if you know how to check those you could start there. To find out which fuse, you usually need a wiring diagram. You can find free copies of those for many vehicles at bbbindustries here on the net. The next place I go is to the master switch, which is usually inside the driver's door panel. I take that off, looking for power and ground at the switch with a multimeter. If you don't have power or ground, you may have a broken wire leading up to the switch, which is often in the wiring loom as it goes through the door jamb. The wiring diagram will show you which color coded wire to check. Most often it is easily found leading into the switch. From there I often find myself tracing back to one of the door locks, usually the drivers side because that panel is already off. You can check for power and ground there, and you can hotwire the actuator to see if it works when power and ground are applied from another source. Many systems also have a switch for the hood latch, and if that switch fails sometimes you won't get a confirmation honk that the doors are all locked. Old vehicles have vacuum driven systems but the vast majority now are electric. Your other option is to ask for pro help, which could cost a few hundred dollars or even more. No guarantees, but it is plenty annoying to go without automatic locks, and your resale value will improve if you can get it fixed. Good luck!

You probably got water into the connector for one of the door latches, maybe at the car wash or maybe before that. One thing to remember is that on some vehicles the hood latch for the engine is also on that security circuit, so make sure your hood/engine bonnet is shut completely, it is easy to overlook that one! If you have access to a scan tool, you might get better info regarding where the problem is. Failing that you will need to open one rear door at a time and look for the problem. I'd have to look at the wiring diagram to see how it works. You can get those from alldatadiy or mitchelldiy or ebay or maybe even bbbindustries if you make a login account. The last time I used bbb it was free, but required a login. The Hilux is my favourite truck, I rented one in Africa for 6 weeks and it was an excellent vehicle. Bombproof, reliable, and not overwhelmed with unnecessary electronics. We can't get them here in North America, it doesn't pass the more stringent pollution controls.

By the way, in my video of the VW hood latch repair, I show the switch and wires that tell the computer the hood is closed. In that video I showed how to fool the computer into thinking the hood is always open or closed by either tying the wires together or capping them so they can never touch. So if the switch inside the latch is bad, you may be able to manually work around the problem without having to pay for a new switch or regulator.

You need to expose those wires leading to the driver door actuator to be sure the actuator is getting power and ground. If in doubt, use a jumper wire, disconnect the feeding wires, and apply power and ground independently to prove the actuator works. The easy solution would be a bad actuator which is easily replaced. If the actuator is good, then carefully examine the wires leading from it back to the switch, looking for a break or short in the wire. Look carefully for frayed wires around the edges of sheet metal. You should be able to prove the switch is working or not by placing a test light across the power and ground connections of the switch, by rocking the switch on and off to prove it works with the test light. If the switch is bad, you could clean terminals, check and fix bad solder joints or connections, or replace the switch. Good luck! India is an amazing culture, I've had the privilege of visiting India, twice.

You Have Problems, Not Issues Somewhere, at some point over the recent past, someone decided that it was no longer acceptable for a person to say what he or she means; it was no longer acceptable to speak in precise, direct words. And what’s worse, someone, somewhere decided that we should all be offended when someone calls a problem a problem. Everything has to be translated into some sort of euphemism. I don’t really know why it started, but can we please stop referring to every problem as an issue? An employee no longer has a problem keeping up with production; he has an issue. A child no longer has a problem behaving in class; she has an issue. A married couple in therapy no longer has problems in their marriage; they have issues. Even bad weather now causes performance issues on the football field and traffic issues on the road; and a basketball player with a sprained ankle has an ankle issue. I’m not sure what’s so offensive about discussing traffic problems, health problems, or a sloppy football game. Is it just me? The problem-that is, what’s wrong-with substituting issue for problem is that those two words are not synonymous-and no amount of being politically correct, disingenuous, or even condescending-yes, it can be condescending-will make it so. An issue is a topic, such as The candidates will discuss the issues at the debate. That means that the candidates will discuss the different topics, or subject areas, involved in running our country. A problem is something negative. A problem is something that needs to be solved. A problem is something that we try to overcome. A problem is something that we don’t want. There, I’ve said it. And it feels great. An issue is not a problem, but I’ll tell you what is a problem: the grammatically incorrect trend of telling someone that he has an issue when what you really mean is that he has a problem. Call it what it is, and it’ll be easier to solve.
