The problem with indian car buyers is that they dont take into consideration of safety while buying a car. And thus just for the sake of social pressure and social status they invest in a cheaper car with less safety features.

    We shouldn't fall into binary thinking - it's not about only excel based calculations or only emotion. It's about making an informed decision. We can do all the calculations and yet decide to choose the other thing - that's fine. But at least we would know the trade-off we are making and that's the most important part.

    Renting a car vs owning a car is probably one of the stupidest thing people compare, imagine in case of any medical emergency in your family or any uncertainty will you wait for a cab? A small car like Alto will also do the same work ( if you're worried about spending too much money on car). Sometimes it's better not to compare things rather just buy them and be happy.

    I feel buying a car should be use case based decision rather than social status. There are many who end up buying car and crib regarding driving problems in congested traffic. Of course there will be societal pressure but then our money is ours. We should not let others drive our decisions. If we feel a car would help us or family practically, then no doubt, its necessary. Had there been no ola or uber, there would have been no debate perhaps.

If a middle class person is planning to rent a car, it is more likely due to unaffordable down-payment and insurance costs that need to be paid upfront. Considering that as an investment wouldn't give the accurate results. This is completely my opinion, would love to hear your thoughts on the same.

    Cool. Many people must do such calculation to identify opportunity cost. Owning cars makes sense for those that drive more than 4000 kms a month. For anyone that doesn't drive even 1000 kms a month, renting a cab is the best option EVs on the the other side might be a a losing proposition at this stage. The batteries in an EV are probably as costly as the car itself. Batteries need to be replaced at an interval. Hybrid might be the best choice and gives the best of both worlds IMHO experience.

    This video is very useful for understanding all financial scenarios related to car. I watched it carefully and I have following observation on it. In case of renting a cab or a car, you have invested the amount of down-payment and insurance + maintenance with some 6% interest and then you calculated the effective rate per km. This is ok. Now, in case of car buying, one is paying down-payment and insurance + maintenance amount but at the same time, monthly subscription is not applicable. So, similar to renting scenario, one can invest this monthly subscription of 22k with same interest for decided period which will also generate returns. This returns should also be considered in buying car scenario. It will be more comparable.

    Hi Ankur, When you are talking about a rented car it can be possible only in major cities or mostly in Metro cities. What about small towns where we are living with a government or private job with the same pay scale and the same amount of travel. What's your opinion about it

    One problem with this calculation is that cost of maintenance of car goes up with time doesn't come down as is assumed in your calculation based on value of the car.

    I am just addressing my point of view and don't want to hurt anyone's thought and I may be too young to talk in front of Warikoo. It is true that buying car (or any other liability) needs huge money and there are other assets which can give us far better returns, But I believe happiness is priceless. If we saved money and there are cores in the bank when we get old, but does anyone want to die without using that money? Definitely NOT! I believe we should 'Keep Growing...Keep Earning...Keep Enjoying'. So, at the end balance should be zero for all these three. Why we are separating out financial from emotional. I think they are not much different, add emotional value in excel and then we will come to know the exact returns. Financially returns may be too less but emotional returns are far better, I think that is the only purpose of life. It is not like we will start begging on road immediately after buying such thing, we will keep learning and keep earning.

    Hi Ankur, while calculating expense of owning a car shouldn’t you consider the SIP of the amount which otherwise you would be paying for subscription? The reason for asking this is when you are calculating for subscription you are considering the return on the down payment which you didn’t have to pay if you went with the subscription. Just think about it.

  • @Ashwajeets

    @Ashwajeets

    Right! If one can afford SIP equivalent to subscription cost, net cost of buying a car can come down making buying a car more financially attractive

    While buying a car, you are also paying off the loan + interest on monthly basis, which kinda takes away your investment ability. Not something which ankur dealt in the video but just putting it out there to think about.

    While renting a car the overall cost comes greater than what it was for owning a car including insurance, service etc. Now if someone has that tight budget how could even after renting the car would invest the savings as he has no savings even though he won't have to pay insurance...

    What if we purchase a pre-owned car for 3L-5L in cash. No loan, no installments, Cheapest Insurance, and local servicing? Owning a car is better in that case. Also, we don't drive 2k kms monthly, so the petrol cost will also drop.
