When I walk on such a car recycling place I can't keep thinking that about 75% of the cars I see would be no problem at all to repair and keep them on the road for still several years, but the very high cost of repair, not the parts, but the cost of one hour in the regular workshop (here in the mainland of Europa), about 120,- euro / hour make it impossible so they and in this sad way not even their used part for sale are not extracted right to the crusher! I know in Rotterdam a car business that buys cars with problems and sends them to Eastern Europa for repair (lower cost = wagess) and than sells them to a new client / owner and they ride still many years, I think this is the way to go it save enormous energie (the energy to make a car is higher then the energy it uses during its lifetime)!

To all these people pissing and moaning about the crushing of cars that appear to have usable parts: chances are many of those crushed had been sitting for months on the racks you see starting at 9:30 or so, ready and waiting for customers needing parts. When scrap prices rise, auto dismantlers look around the lot and start picking which vehicles are more valuable as scrap as opposed to * possible * parts sales at * some point * in the future. Storage space is limited. They probably had a dozen other 3-series sedans on the lot and this one's number came up. These people know the business - contributors here do not.

The fact is, there probably isn't anything irreparably wrong with most of these cars. Bodywork these days is galvanised and doesn't rot anything like it used to. Engines, if cared for, will run to very, very high mileages indeed. It seems a bit of a shame to be destroying them, but people want brand new ones and old cars aren't worth much and are often scrapped because they require a fair proportion of their value in repairs. It's a shame. But a set of tyres can easily run you £/EUR500 - so getting an old car through it's annual inspection can cost just as much as replacing it might.

Note to anyone considering producing car crushers. Make one that works properly. Make one that crushes it without having to pick it up, and spin it around, and turn it sideways. Make one big enough to actually fit a car inside of it.

Most recycled cars here are about 12-15 years old (BMW E 46 prefacelift, Opel, that whiteMB van) Scrapyards exist, but it's not as feasible as one vould expect because when a lot of people scrap their cars after certain age and mileage, demand for spares is also lower. When interest rate for new car payments is almost non existent, most middle class people are just buying new cars every 4 years, those who buy those 4 year old cars eventually end up scrapping them because there's not much demand for older cars, especially for UK cars with right hand drive. Only sportcars and rare cars are sought after.

that and road tax is often greater than resale value. Also, yeah, most cars in the UK get replaced every 2 to 4 years, and MOT takes a lot of old cars off the road, which is something Trump wants to do here.

Usually they are so cheap and repearing rusty e46 or sprinter is bad idea. In england or Germany you can find 10yo can never oil chenanged so cheapest option is buy another. Many mechanics still thinking That you cant chanange oil in automatic transmission. People in europe also like changing cars

I don’t know how it is in the US, but in Europe we have this thing called EU-check (might not be the right definition). What it means is that cars every 2nd year must be at a garage checking it for a a long list of thing to be allowed to drive. Brakes are of course the obvious on the list. Often it would cost a lot to fix it, so much it is more than the value of the car. Then they wreck it. Regarding new cars they often have expensive electronics. If that fails, which it does sometimes, it is so expensive to fix, so it is not worth it. That is why I think you see some new cars here. Sorry my English grammar and vocabulary isn’t perfect here, but it is probably better than your understanding of my mother tongue, Norwegian.

It's most likely they already have several of this model to strip for parts, so they crush the least desirable colour/spec to create space

BMW wasn’t even that old or damaged. I take it all those new looking (or mostly new) cars in the background on the racks behind the crusher are also due to be scrapped? What a waste.
