Enjoyable video, it's interesting to see how we all do things a little differently. I'm in an Octavia saloon. An indoor loo is a must. 2.5 litre plastic paint kettle lined with a small white bin liner for twos. Drinking bottles for ones! Window socks for midges and daytime privacy. Rear side windows tinted. Also, I use gas stove in car with plenty of ventilation to make coffee. Been at it two months now and with the summer, I haven't need rain deflectors, but I'm planning to fit them soon.

couple of tips Paint outside of window covers black so as not so noticeable. and biodegradable soap should not go into streams but at least 50 feet away. Just saying to be helpful.

I did a similar route to you back in September, and loved every minute of it! I was in a similar sized car (Insignia) and took along a pop-up tent so that I could pretend to be sleeping in that and use campsite showers etc. The car was much better than a tent - no draughts or leaks - and I can't wait to take off to Caithness and Sutherland again next year. I shall definitely adopt the "flip-flops in the door pocket" trick!

That's a good idea to get onto campsites. 99% were closed in October though. Did you still have midges then? What did you do about them getting in through the cracked windows at night?

@@daydreaming77 I must admit that I had to do a bit of of research to find campsites still taking tents (a lot seemed restricted to "self sufficient" people in camper vans and caravans i.e. not needing use of facilities) but there were still a few good ones open. I didn't seem to have midge issues apart from on one of the two nights I actually slept in the tent - maybe they leave Anglo-Scots alone! Having spent £10 on midge repellant in Fort William I felt a bit cheated that I didn't really have to use it!

Doing same in September (28 days) with my dog, in a C3 Picasso. Just making window covers - more difficult than I expected! I have a roll up futon which fits perfectly on the 60 side of the 60/40 back seat split when it's folded down. Scruffy will sleep on the remaining 40% rear seat. Like you, I bought wind deflectors for front and rear windows to allow good ventilation and a USB fan to keep the air moving. I also have a 12v cool box (which can just be a cool box if cold enough). Power is from 4x power banks which should be fine, I'll keep two charged by the car all the time. Lighting wise, I have a USB lantern (warm light) and 2x rechargable headlamps plus USB fairy lights - should be adequate. I've just ordered from amazon a rear hatch tent which allows the hatch to be open but waterproof and midgeproof. Hopefully good for wet days when I need to cook inside. I'm so looking forward to my mini adventure. Glad you had a great time too!

How did you get on? 40 years ago I did a number of trips From Portsmouth up to Scotland camping in my Fiat Panda & Toured all over the remoter parts of Scotland, especially the North west. I’ve been many, many times since but stayed in holiday cottages etc. I’ve just got my myself a VW Passat estate & when the guy who was showing me the car dropped the back seats to show me how much storage space there was my mind went straight back to those happy days. As I’m here watching this download with my lovely pooch snoring next to me on the sofa, can you guess what’s on my mind? My dogs never been to Scotland or car camping. There were some great tips from this like minded lady, I hope she does some more downloads showing us where she camped etc & I hope you read this & let us know what your trip was like😎

Tip, there is usually space around the spare wheel well, that's were i store my cold bag as on sunny days it does not heat up like the rest of the car.

Some great tips, thanks. Had 5 days in southwest Scotland in my Octavia. Excellent car for camping, im 6ft and can easily stretch out in the back. Roofbox on top reduces clutter inside the car. Can keep the grubbier stuff, fishing/cooking tackle outside. With a small trailer too , you would have immense storage space.

I use a Thule towbar carrier with a cheap large plastic box bolted on for all my odd s and ends, so much easier than a trailer and no wind resistance as a roof box has .

I know Robert - I think it's the freedom of the open road and the pristine nature. Give the car a go - the only downside was on a rainy day I wasn't that keen on getting outside and cooking on my stove - thank goodness for the car kettle, at least I could have tea, porridge and pot snacks! Hi, I am going to do the NC 500 etc once lockdown finishes (or before) .....I have a work van and I have built a single bed in it {Lots of storage underneath).....I have done bits before but had to rush........im going to take a month off - Thanks for the video.

Fair play to you! I'm self employed and normally camp in my van for work instead of hotels but because of a catastrophic engine failure I found myself buying an estate car just to get by. I have every intention of camping in it and using it to my advantage (I have a £55 a night allowance so for a normal week away it's £220 for free). Luckily for me the places I work normally have shower facilitates so that's a massive bonus. Number 1 priority for me is a comfy bed. I have learned over the years if you don't get a good night's sleep you're screwed for the rest of the day. Good luck with the future and I look forward to seeing more camping videos.

Thanks Luton van man, that's quite a bonus you are getting by sleeping in your van. Lucky you get a shower at work so you don't turn too Neanderthal. I went a bit feral to be honest. In normal times I'd have checked into a campsite to get a warm shower but they were all closed to campers 😕

@@daydreaming77 Campsites are a massive rip off. Some are just a few quid less than a shitty hotel!!!

Don't wash your hair in a stream with any kind of soap. It's bad. Even if it's biodegradable. Either just freshen it up in the stream without soap, or get it wet and soap up and rinse quite a way away from the stream so it doesn't enter the waters.

Hi, ive got the same type octavia and i plan doing the same. You take wine with you? Doesnt that mean you can be charged with being drunk in charge of a vehicle? Asking causevi like a beer before bed

I've watched a few of these, and I'm seeing a rather counter-intuitive pattern emerging... Men with fancy, well organised and planned set ups, and women just completely winging it chucking the stuff in the car wherever lol

Absolutely brilliant although how much kit do you need lol. I had the same car and loved it yet never had the chance to car camp as a lovely lorry smashed into it. I had the previous model also and slept out loads of times as the room in these are amazing. Just lived watching you laugh and be encouraging, well done. All the best Ken

Thanks Ken. Shame about Skody 😪 It certainly looks a lot but I knew I wouldn't get a chance to wash any clothes in a month. Plus the different footwear needed for the mountains, big bag for carrying gear to the bothies. I didn't even show all the fire logs I stuffed under the seat. Packing for this weekend now and it's a lot, lot less!

For a shower use a hand pumped plant sprayer or the rac hand pump car washer

From the look at the boot area at 08:00 there doesn't seem to be any spare room for you, it must be really cramped in there?

I do the same in my Skoda Fabia. Bit smaller than your Octy, but still room in the back to sleep lying down and have a mountain bike in there. Saved a small fortune in B&B and campsite fees. Am going to make a set of window covers like you showed.

@@iwalker3809 I bought the type of suction cup that has a little plastic bolt on. I poked a hole in the insulation with a screw and secured the suction cup with the bolt. Easy to do and they stuck on well!

I want to do this with my Skoda Fabia combi

Greetings from another Octy owner, who is also a regular visitor to Scotland! Mine is the later model which will manage 70 mpg comfortably if you go easy on the gas pedal, and it is even free road tax because emissions are below 100g per Km. No wonder all the Polish taxi drivers have one. I think your suggestion to burn toilet paper is a great one. I am not too worried about the rest of it as if you choose your spot sensibly it is soon absorbed into the ground. A cow pat is gone without trace in about six weeks so your jobby will be history even before you get back home. How long does the car kettle take to boil? I have had one before but it was pretty pointless as it took over 20 minutes to boil a small cup. If the stainless steel construction is anything to go by yours looks a bit more substantial.

I am loving my Skoda, I wish I got one sooner rather than the gas-guzzling old Jag's that I used to drive because I liked the bodywork :) Thanks for the jobby analysis; how did the fossilized Viking poo at Jorvik get to be so I wonder? I case of the wrong place at the wrong time for that Viking? The kettle was only a cheap one from Ebay but the walls were insulated and seemed to do a good job. It is 75cl so perfect for my flask. Also took 20 mins to heat but I used that when I was driving to top up the tea flask and my gas stove for morning tea :)

@@daydreaming77 Hi thanks. It was a farmer who told me it took six weeks, when lying on the surface of the ground. Foxes and badgers eat a mixed meat and veg diet like us and there are plenty of them about so as long as you are discreet and have a little folding shovel I don't see any problem. I wonder if the poo at Jorvik was above the ground or somewhere where flies and beetles would be unable to get to it. I found a kettle on eBay which looks like yours so I will give that a whirl. You say you use it when driving so I will find a way of keeping it secure so it can't tip over. The Skoda has various cubby holes and cup holders on the centre console like yours but they all seem a bit too close to my left hand for my liking.

Mine fell over until I discovered that the handle fitted nicely over the handle for adjusting the passenger seat in the passenger footwell

How long does it take to boil up water in kettle ?How do you use it ?

It plugs into the cigarette lighter and takes nearly 20 minutes to boil 70cl of water. It has a small LED to show it has boiled and then keeps warm. I only used it when actually driving and used my gas stove for other water and cooking 😄

Just found this! as i am contemplating car camping! You’ve got exactly the same car as me down to the colour! And the same foldable poop scoop! Or have you been nicking mine and popping it back on the drive every morning! You cunning fox you! Great vid though so i forgive you!

You are a clever independent young woman, perhaps next time use a more suitable vehicle like a kangoo where you don't have to black out the windows and you would have a lot more room for your kit, but well done not many females would have done this.
