Captain Robert Nairac murder by the IRA

Captain Robert Laurence Nairac GC (31 August 1948 - 15 May 1977) was a British Army officer in 14 Intelligence Company[1][2] who was abducted from a pub in Dromintee, south County Armagh, during an undercover operation and killed by the Provisional Irish Republican Army (IRA) on his fourth tour of duty in Northern Ireland as a Military Intelligence Liaison Officer.

I have read more than I can remember about Nairac and even as a University student e was an oddball. I pretty well agree with what you say about him, but there is one thing that I keep coming back to regarding what ever is written, or spoken about him and that is, Why was he allowed to continue with his maverick antics without ever being pulled into line? Even one of his own brother officers went to see the senior officer in charge and recommend that he be taken out of Northern Ireland because of the things he was doing and this guy was basically ignored. It always makes me wonder. The guy was behaving like he was in some sort of James Bond fantasy world and people were happy to just let him carry on for whatever reason. Sheer lunacy which ended in the inevitable.

@@josephlennon8475 People like the ones you mention certainly do think differently to most but in the case of Nairac, his actions were nothing short of completely irresponsible, you could put them in a Hollywood film script. It was almost as if he had suicidal tendencies. I have spent over 20 years in Northern Ireland, mostly in Belfast as well as other Areas and I can say with 💯% Certainty, nobody would have got away with a bluff like that in an area such as South Armagh, nobody.

Well I don’t think he had a nervous breakdown because it was him who invented the car bombing in the troubles. He along with UDA members bombed the Irish republic known as the Dublin and Monaghan bombings. Then he was responsible for the brutal murder of the Miami Showband. He was the one who stopped the band members that night after setting up a fake checkpoint. The plan was to plant a bomb in the back of the van of the band members who were both made up of catholic and Protestant. When the bomb went off at the “checkpoint” he shot the Miami showband with “dum dum” bulletts. The guy was a psychopath.

@@Stargreened Things are never so clear cut. People have researched Nairac and it's well documented that he was in Scotland at the time of the Miami Showband bomb. As for him 'inventing' the car bombing in the south, I really doubt it as neither he nor the Loyalist paramilitaries had the technical knowledge to make a timed detonator. I think there was wider collusion between the British Intel and Military and Loyalist paramilitaries concerning that.

Thats when suspicions where raised....You don't sing a sticky song in the heartland of south Armagh IRA....The provos dont like offical sticky IRA. period.(they use to operate together but they broke of from each other) Nairac with little knowledge of the ideology of that area made the fatal mistake of thinking their ballads and songs related to all republican.....South Armagh resident.... ...And i hope one day they will give up his whereabouts.....

@@cocksure8430 Imagine one of Margaret Thatcher's Northern Ireland minister's saying that the IRA's violence worked ...It's got to hurt, I mean really, really hurt ! ..A former Northern Ireland secretary who served under Margaret Thatcher has said the IRA's violence worked. Lord Jim Prior was secretary of state in 1981 at the time of the hunger strikes when 10 republicans died in prison. Mrs Thatcher said the men were criminals and refused to grant concessions. But Lord Prior told a BBC documentary that she never really understood what the problem was. "Violence probably does work, it may not work quickly and may not be seen to work quickly, but in the long run, one has to look back and say it did work," he told documentary maker Peter Taylor in a programme to be broadcast on Monday.
