John Adams was always a fair man . He did not like the British but he defended them . Even at his own peril .

"taking the kings shilling" is a term used here for being tricked into the army, true most weren't tricked into the army but it did happen, infact most soldiers were ex criminals, when faced with the noose or the army i know what I'd pick. Shooting unarmed civilians without proper cause would carry a death sentence for British soldiers too, especially civilians that were viewed as British subjects, rebellious ones, but still British.

The first episode of this series is by far the best, because it shows Adams in this compromising position wrapped up in this turbulent point in history, trying to maintain reason. It is foreshadowing about his role in keeping the Jeffersonians and the Hamiltonites from tearing the infant nation apart after independence.
Absolutely awesome scene. The actor portraying Captain Preston is nothing short of perfect. Loved this series, it captured so much that for a time was being lost.

a brilliant actor playing one of the most critically important figures not openly in history but in the formation of a new and great Republic, a man who'd wit, his amazingly beautiful relationship, friendship and deep love for his wife, who both produced a POTUS John Quincy Adams, but also lost a son to drink, Paul G simply nails this American ion to perfection, as an Australian I bemoan WHY we had no John Adams, Jefferson, Americans should be so proud of their Founding Fathers and the document they constructed which is arguably the best, the most citizen friendly Constitution in history, the 1A and the 2A are articles of faith, and are so critical in todays world of political correctness and identity politics, and the media/left's endless drive to appease a faith that is simply barbaric. I challenge ANYONE to read the koran and NOT find several direct quotes, references for violence, Christianity had it's reformation, islam did not. Adams remains the republics greatest son along with Washington and Jefferson, IMHO. Why he is not on Mt Rushmore is stunning given what he did to create the republic, and his critical influence, at home, and abroad.

The British troops were caught in the middle, not much else they could have done under the circumstances. There were greater forces at work.
My mind is still blown that they filmed the holding cell scene in the real courtyard where the British soldiers involved were actually held.

You have to remember how difficult it was for British soldiers. As a highly disciplined although often flogged force of scally-wags and with 1/3 of the ranks from Ireland with some disdain for the Crown; these new Americans, their government, their standing army of men, were their brothers.
