Alan Moore has said in interviews that HIS Merlin (in Captian Britain) was actually the final incarnation of the Doctor from Doctor Who.

The perfect collection. I’m just really narked that they positioned Brian over the title on the cover, because it reads as “Captain Brain”

Some of the post-Claremont early material is really dire. But it will be nice to have it all together in one place. The Moore run is surprisingly short but hugely important for the first explicit Marvel multiverse, with identification of the main Marvel timeline as 616.

I've actually never read any of the material, and I'm bummed about the loss of the two Captain America issues, but I've always been interested in reading some Captain Britain stories. All British comics are anthology titles, you get anything from 1-8 pages per issue but the comics are mostly weekly so it kinda balances out over the course of a month. Being British myself I have a soft spot for British Writers and Artists (sorry Omar I love Mark Millar ha-ha) I have been so looking forward to this book.

Still one of my favourites, I wish Marvel would restore our Captain to his proper glory again in a new book with Alan Davis and other UK creators on it. I bought all those weeklies when they came out (and the reprint annual where that lovely original costume cover comes from). It was a big deal to us here at the time to have Marvel doing original UK material for a weekly comic (with even some big John Buscema art inked by Tom Palmer when it comes to the Captain America story). I have all the previous hardcovers, but can't pass up this all in one volume, which hopefully should be arriving on my doorstep soon :) The missing Captain America issues from this volume aren't really a big thing. It wasn't in step with the character much at the time as Mike Carlin wrote it, and of course there's a twist on that in the story too.

I ordered the dm edition as the cover was used on the cb annual 1977 or 78. I was happy with the printing until they got to the new costume and decided to go with colored edition rather than the original b&w pages when it was originally released. The extras look different to what were in the back of the two hc from about 10-12 years ago. Nice overview, but leaves me wondering if they went with the colour reprints because collectors in other countries would not like or stand the b&w format.

I have the Captain Britain trade paperback from 1988 (possibly the first TPB I ever bought, actually) and I was always under the impression Jamie Delano had done most of the writing for the issues included in that one, not Alan Davis. Got mine yesterday. Glad to have it and have all that bonus material. A couple comments, natch: The paper is REALLY thin. I found myself accidentally bending pages while stretching the spine, and also found a crease across dozens of pages (a printing defect, as the book was sealed). I wish Marvel would include the creators in the table of contents. I know there are issues with Moore's attribution (inconsistently applied here) - but this also came up when I was reading What If..? A list of the contributors isn't as helpful as a more specific one. I liked that they numbered the pages. Still yet to be reprinted - the original appearances of TechNet / Special Executive in Alan Moore's 'Doctor Who' stories. LICENSING!

Great overview Omar, I have the book coming in next week and am excited to read this stuff as I have no experience with it. I have to say, I really love the black and white art, the coloring from that era was so garish and hit or miss with the reproduction techniques they had. I would prefer to read almost all the old silver age books in black and white if available if only to see more of the great line work of that era's artists. Also, Alan Davis' panel and page layout here is just amazing to look at - characters and artwork jumping between panels, angular construction, using the gutters for effect - man, this stuff was really cool and different.

I am really getting tired of the number of misprints I am seeing, and the common denominator seems to be the printer Imak from Turkey. The new printing of Hulk omni has misprinted colors pgs 682-695, PAD Hulk v3 has misprinted cover from an interior issue, the Silver Surfer reprint I have has out of order pages (this was across the whole print run), paper quality continues to get worse etc etc. I would love for you to have a full episode devoted to these issues just so maybe Marvel will take notice!

Also something to bear in mind is that in the uk comics traditionally got produced weekly. This tended to leave strips with short page counts and several titles in one issue. These books rarely got cancelled outright with there best characters simply being rolled into another book. Going off at a tangent at the time planet of the apes was fantastically popular in the uk but unfortunately it was reprinting comics that had already been cancelled by Marvel. In an effort to keep it going they shrunk the page count down to around 7 pages and bundled it with Hulk. In a final act of desperation they amusingly tried to pass Killraven's war of the worlds comic off as Apes material and had someone slapping monkey heads on all the Mutants and tweaking the dialogue.

Moore may not legally have a call, but if he doesn’t want his name in the table of contents or on the cover, it’s probably in Marvel’s best interest to comply. They don’t need him making a stink over this book and potentially costing them sales from a boycott or something. And they may have some faint hope of working with him again, so why burn bridges unnecessarily?

As a reader when these came out I lost interest after the costume change. Just didn't seem like the same character. I was so excited when he made a comeback in Hulk Weekly via the Black Knight story.

Honestly if you’re an X-men fan, Fall of the Mutants. If you’re curious about the whacky characters from the UK, Captain Britain. But no require reading really to jump in.

On one hand, Merlyn and magical knights are a fairly comprehensible genre that wouldn't be hard to sell to the general audience. And once you have that, the otherworld multiverse is a possible path to bring in the X-Men. On the other hand the idea of being a member of a multiversal group of Captain Britains is an idea that Spider-verse and NWH already tapped into so that might be seen as something that's already been done. In conclusion, your guess is as good as mine

Too bad they didn't go back to recolor those black and white issues. Wouldn't be that hard in this day and age. I had those original hardcover Birth of a Legends copies and those were stories were okay but I ended up selling them because I knew I wouldn't reread those. Once Davis and Moore came onboard, it got much better though and I still have those original softcover trades.
