For the record, this show was a Dutch parody on all the TV-shows worldwide treating artists like gods. Also it was just plain weird. The director of this show, Ellen Jens, talks about this particular episode in some article, telling how Don seemed to really like this concept and starting contributing by playbacking really badly, on purpose. Also he got that silver cup which he was very content with afterwards. Don also asked the director if he could have his shirt, because he liked it so much.

And Wim T. Schippers. Aired on VPRO in 1974-1975. The show, written by Wim T. Schippers and produced by Ellen Jens, starred Dolf Brouwers as the comedic character Sjef van Oekel, and parodied music television programs of the era. Artists lip-synched their songs, but were frequently interrupted and insulted by van Oekel. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Oekel%27s_Discohoek

Please be reminded that this is actually a very sophisticated and elaborated work of art disguised as a pop-show. Something never seen before and never seen since. The artist (Wim T. Schippers) used TV and expressions of popular culture as a canvas to paint an alternative reality. Or rather: the idea of an alternative reality where archaic language and ditto theatrical effects clash with vulgar, physical expressions and popular culture. The result was usually very unsettling and controversial.

Schippers also made a peanut butter floor. :) And he was part of Hoepla (1967), the show that premiered a naked female (Phil Bloom) on television. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wim_T._Schippers
That guy really startled Don @ 3:45
The single weirdest thing I've seen all day. The Captain is weird but the Dutch are weirder...hang on- he's Dutch too ! boy o boy - all hail Sjef van Oekel (talk show host) & Wim T. Schippers (the guy who came up with this wonderful show). This makes my day - definitely
Amazing. I've been spending the afternoon making digital copies of Dr. Hook albums and you send me Beefheart. What's next - Zappa?
I believe he could understand some Dutch .. being of that descent., Mr.Vliet.. After WW2, dutch politicians even urged their citizens to move to America.. I´ve met a few in CA, growing tulips there :) Good thing Cpt.B wasnt born in Holland..
The only thing missing is Salvador Dali painting in the back ground to make this surrealistic performance complete!
Glad it does.
first time oh my my
I want the Captain's shirt...

chokkan7 me too!!
absolute surrealistic,paranormal environment for Captain...hahahahaha
REAL HONESTY
Haha, outweirded is an excellent new word.
The Cap's surname is very Upper Hudson River Valley!
Consider this as a moderate act of Sjef van Oekel.
What THE beef I don't have the heart, captain
Look at KZread ~ "Going to the dogs" part1 ~ and enjoy the original masterpiece!
...still occasionally have moments where I see boring through a lens I got from no one but him. (And possibly Thelonious Monk)... I think I've put this badly...What you said puts it best
Bad ass!
he playbacks like Herman Brood did in the soundmix show
''Vut a successs!'' 😁😄😆
I do not know the words to describe this. Shocking and wonderful are ok? (In a few minutes break 100 television rules)
Reminds me of Dick Valentine of Electric Six.
The funny thing is Captain Beefheart never liked the Beatles
@nilselmano On the contrary. He does, and what is more he has a warped sense of humour.
Call me paranoid, but it looks like those guys were jabbing at him and he got them back with 'Yesterday' and walked out on them.
The "jabbing" at artists is part of the show.
@FasterBullbus im kind of up to this point in dons career, john french's book. and ive been trying to find bootlegs and different takes to put instruments and voices to the recordings. its became quite an obsession lately. did he lip sync a lot of the tragic band gigs?
Can someone explain what Van Hoekel means when he says '' Go your gang. Allez votre corridor''

It means "go ahead". "Do your thing" !Phonetically a joke on how in Amsterdam they speak english or french in this one also. In dutch it's "ga je gang". A "gang" is a hallway in dutch. Is a corridor in french. It's a kind of alliteration......👻
real lip sync winner.

+horaciusjp makes it better
The organ player is playing Clarinet Polka while the announcer guy does his thing.
@Bietel Don (Glen Vliet, only later called Van Vliet) hadn't got a clue. The only thing he thinks is: What a bunch of weirdos!! And he was right. He was lucky the stage wall didn't collapse as he went through the door. Usually it did. Sjef van Oekel was/is an icon. Evert van der Pik (Van The Dick) tried to make something serious out of it but only made it worse... Great show. They don't make 'em like this any more..
tof
Fckn brilliant, now I get off U tube and get back to life.

+Michael Moore smart man
"Als het ware"...
did he playback it?
I don't think he ever lipsynced a gig. this is just a recorded tv show
Never seen this. A little weird with Don lip-synching. Loved it when he asked the keyboard player to play Yesterday. Don had a good taste in music. RIP Don.
just another example of a terribly unique artist dude w/his own style and voice. who's up for the same hair style? haha
Capt. Beefsteak lolz
Dans cette émission déjantée comme je les aime, le Capitaine Coeur de boeuf est partit tres "haut"....
"Kapitäin Beefstick"...Hahaha
