Something very powerful with this man. Not just a joker or kind of ironical type of guy. Something damnably serious and profound behind the clown. In fact, I can't even see the clown anywhere. He's just a master in human behavior stuff, poetry and music too. WOW !

For the record, this show was a Dutch parody on all the TV-shows worldwide treating artists like gods. Also it was just plain weird. The director of this show, Ellen Jens, talks about this particular episode in some article, telling how Don seemed to really like this concept and starting contributing by playbacking really badly, on purpose. Also he got that silver cup which he was very content with afterwards. Don also asked the director if he could have his shirt, because he liked it so much.

And Wim T. Schippers. Aired on VPRO in 1974-1975. The show, written by Wim T. Schippers and produced by Ellen Jens, starred Dolf Brouwers as the comedic character Sjef van Oekel, and parodied music television programs of the era. Artists lip-synched their songs, but were frequently interrupted and insulted by van Oekel. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Van_Oekel%27s_Discohoek

Please be reminded that this is actually a very sophisticated and elaborated work of art disguised as a pop-show. Something never seen before and never seen since. The artist (Wim T. Schippers) used TV and expressions of popular culture as a canvas to paint an alternative reality. Or rather: the idea of an alternative reality where archaic language and ditto theatrical effects clash with vulgar, physical expressions and popular culture. The result was usually very unsettling and controversial.

Either Van Vliet totally understands this, and appreciates it - or he hasn't got a clue... just like people either totally understand Beefheart's music, or don't have a clue.

Don's teasing character fitted in this absurd music program. The director behind the scene W T Schippers was as anarchistic artist comparable with Van Vliet. Schippers made many shows that shocked the establisment in the Netherlands. His 'totally insane' satire pushed the limits. Donna Summer was also intruduced in this program of Schippers, see YT: "Van Oekel's Discohoek: Donna Summer -The Hostage". Schippers was also an unique 'chaotic' DJ on radio. And he made a theatre play only for dogs...
