It's interesting to hear Caps armor described as "scalemail" I always thought of it as invoking the feathers of an eagle. Very interesting, excellent work gentlemen!

To be fair feathers ARE highly modified scales. So it's accurate either way

53:19 so fun fact about this suit it’s actually from a Marvel mobile game, Contest of Champions, it’s an OC character called Civil Warrior and has the exact same design except has the classic shield with an arc reactor center piece so he can do special moves and have a uni-beam attack Came out during the Cap Civil War movie as a tie in event new character. It’s supposed to be Steve in an Iron Man suit and I guess cause Marvel owns the design they decided to use it in Secret Empire

Sam's Captain America suit was hands down the best looking in my opinion and with his new shield design incorporating Falcons symbol with the star is awesome. 10/10

Jack Monroe wore an updated Nomad costume in the 80’s. It was actually a cool redesign by either Mike Zeck or Paul Neary. I can’t remember which.

I liked the Marvel Now update of Cap's costume (Hickman's Avengers run) it was more armored and tactical looking. Love his classic costume but that Hickman's run costume still kept the same aesthetic as the classic but made it modern. I'm a helmet guy now as opposed to Cap having a cowl.

A Cap book that Sal and Joel should also review is Jack Kirby's "Captain America's Bicentennial Battles." Along with a time travel storyline, it includes a collection of period costume designs that gave dramatically different looks that I found more challenging than the costumes displayed on this installment. Another great one, guys...

They gave the Agent Steve suit to Nick Fury Jr. for a while. So it did spin off pretty well to another character.

Great video. The Nomad costume would've looked better if the exposed skin area was covered with fabric the same color as the inside of the cape. Also, Wolverine's costume is brown and tan like an actual Wolverine animal. Superman didn't wear a mullet. It was just long hair. If it's short/low on the sides and short/low or buzzed on top then it's a mullet.

So, slight precision - Captain America wasn't truly retired after WW2. Publication ceased because sales of every superhero books took a nose-dive after WWII, but he did have a bunch of "specials" in the 50s... extremely cringy, paranoid "red scare" comics. Stan Lee and collaborators came up with the "stuck in ice" idea specifically to make these 50s comics non-canon. They were recanonized years later as being a different who got given a flawed recreation of the super-soldier serum and went mad. He popped up as a villain a few times over the years, notably in Brubaker's run.

Never could find a good place to ask this: what is the intent behind relatively recent costume designs having excessive seams/piping? They'd seem redundant if they get lost in motion or in a dynamic scene, or in disparate art direction?

Hey I know this is a bit of a late comment but if you search up “Captain America White Skull”, you can see him wearing a modernized version of the exoskeleton that has the weird visor - when he rescued the skull.

I'm a big fan of Classic Cap, so a lot of the redesigns don't work for me. That being said, I love the Ultimate WWII suit with the helmet and heater shield. The Marvel Now suit was a decent modernized version of the Classic. I hope to see Captain America in Dimension Z on Back Issues someday.

If I were to put Captain America back into the Nomad identity, I would make his suit more Old west or frontiersman looking. I’d Old Man Logan the hell out of that costume. Give cap a duster, a black tank top with a spray painted on white star, some military surplus camo pants in like an olive drab, some cowboy boots and then accessorize him with a sawed off shotgun. That would be the perfect Nomad costume

You are 100% on with the Kenner dress up Bruce Wayne toys in regards to Alex Ross. That said, both his Bucky and Spidey are in my top twos for either character. If you've seen his X-Men, it's.. he goes with a simple style and loves black. Consequently, I can't help but be a sucker for his concepts.

you missed one costume. Steve wore a very basic costume stripped off of all american flag parts and a different mask and an orange laser-shield during the storyline "Enemy of the state". That was also the storyline which featured a very buff Bill Clinton actually using the Captain America shield, and shirtless Steve Rogers having a smalltalk with Dr. Doom
