Capitol Dome Restoration

The Dome of the U.S. Capitol Building, one of America's great symbols of freedom, needed additional restoration as part of an on-going multi-phased program.
This project was a critical step for stopping the current level of deterioration in the Dome's cast iron as well as ensuring the protection of the interior of the Dome and Rotunda. The restoration project included removal of old paint, repairs to the cast iron and stone, and repainting.
UPDATE: This once-in-a-generation project was completed in 2016. Full Dome Restoration details are at www.aoc.gov/dome. Watch the celebration video at • In Celebration of the ... .

Its only lasted 150 years with 1 partial restoration in that time. Too bad they didn't pick something more resilient in the 1860s, considering how many other materials were around back then. 🙄

Very cool. I remember that there was some debate about whether or not to proceed with the work and I was just floored. Of course, you must preserve this iconic feature of this iconic building. My first ever trip to DC in 2015, the work was still going on but by my 2018 return, it was complete.

We Americans should take the opportunity to restore a liberty cap to the top of the statue on top of the Capitol dome. The cap was removed from the initial design by Jefferson Davis in the 1850s. It represents the freed slave, and Davis would have nothing of that. The liberty cap, sometimes on a liberty pole, was a common symbol in the first century following the Declaration of Independence for our highest ideals. After 150 years, it's time.
