Capitalism (Part One)

Ойын-сауық

Join Peppermint for an enlightening exploration of capitalism in this episode, where we're joined by Dr. Nicole Truesdell (@drnicoletruesdell), an abolitionist, creative, astrologer, and anthropologist whose Ph.D. expertise sheds light on the intricate workings of societal structures. Dr. Truesdell guides us through a nuanced deconstruction of capitalism, revealing its mechanisms of control and suppression while delving into its intersections with race, gender, and sexuality, emphasizing its disproportionate impact on marginalized communities. Drawing from anthropology, she unpacks the historical and cultural roots of capitalism, inspiring listeners to envision a world liberated from its grip, where justice, equity, and collective well-being prevail. Through storytelling and analysis, she offers practical strategies for resistance and transformation, empowering us to confront capitalism's grip and cultivate alternative modes of existence rooted in community, solidarity, and liberation. Join us in this thought-provoking exploration as we reimagine our world and reclaim our agency in shaping a more just and equitable society, where all individuals can thrive free from the shackles of exploitation and inequality. Welcome to a conversation that ignites dialogue and inspires action toward a brighter future for us all.

Thank you for having me on again! I so appreciate the space and love as it is healing for me as a Black queer educator who had to leave academia in order to really teach and speak like I wanted.

You mean the fracking? Lol, jokes aside, I think this is a topic that is on a lot people's minds and rightly so. Capitalism IS exploitation, and if you aren't being exploited, then you are the exploiter. The sad truth is that these systems promote the exploiter and diminish the exploited, instead of advocating for them. That's why Conservatives and Republicans are so afraid of socialism. It's why the "Red Scare" was so frightful. "A world without private ownership and frivolous things off the back of someone else, that sounds like a horror story!" I always say that imagination is the rarest commodity in the universe. It frustrates me that most people can't imagine a world without capitalism, even though we have essentially lived that life for 95% of the 300,000+ years we've been a distinct species. I used to blame agriculture for starting capitalism, but the truth is that capitalism often goes hand-in-hand with religion. Not spirituality, or spiritual beliefs, but organized religion. I can't think of two things more socially detrimental to women, the disabled, femmes, and the LGBTQI+.

I have been an anarcho communist since I was fifteen in 1993. I would consider myself an extremist and a realist. The big problem with capitalism is severe lack of regulations and worker protections. My brain wants to say a third thing but it isn't coming out now so I will likely add another comment.

people who support capitalism build their argument on a false premise, that being the hierarchies of capitalism are based on competence, they are wrong. the hierarchies of capitalism are pyramid /\ shaped, while every natural hierarchy of competence is a bell curve, with few at the top and bottom and the majority in the MIDDLE. /\ pyramid hierarchies are artificial and integral to capitalism/profit, there has to be a very large base in a capitalist hierarchy in order for profit to be generated, profit is not possible in a natural bell curve hierarchy. capitalism is unethical and abusive because of that fact.

The comment equivalent to "we live in a society", drag isn't capitalism, it's an art form which can be used for capital gains and existed differently before capitalism was ever a thing and people still need to be part of the systems and the society they were born in, because you either do that or you starve to death.

For most drag queens it’s nothing but a hobby because of a lack of minimum wage or job security for performers and self employed people. Try to recall a time big business got taxed the same as gameshow winnings. Remember most Billionaires don’t pay tax and yet Drag Race Winners pay up to 40% in tax on their show winnings. Capitalism attacks those at the bottom not the top.

And billionaires only exist due to capitalism. Capitalism relies on the degradation of others for the betterment of yourself. Learn something before you comment on it :)

Easy, I studied it from different perspective and as I said in my talk capitalism steals history and knowledge and spits it back out for its benefit, so learning from different perspectives is key now. But if that is all you took from the video than that is the real shame.

@@drnicoletruesdell Pseudo-sciences may be history but specifically Astrology is far far away from knowledge. Don't get me wrong we should aspire to democratize actual science and I think is great to study early (or "ancestral) practices, but astrology? really? that has been debunked too many times, by now is just a tool of capitalism to distract women and minorities from discuss actual science and knowledge, is a waste of time and you should know better. Maybe talk about that, talk about how in women's magazines capitalism pushes astrology, the boom of astrology is a concequence of capitalism because is just a way to distract and control, just like most pseudo-sciences.
