Capel Celyn drowned Welsh village filmed mid 1990`s

All I can rescue of some old 8mm footage of Capel Celyn I filmed during a hot summer in the mid 1990`s, the village made a return for a short while. Drowned in the 1960`s to make a reservoir.

Does anyone seriously think that a few pounds and a council house can compensate a family for the land their families have lived on for generations. If there is one thing that burns in the soul of every welsh person it is the sense of their home and their land. Their family land continuation handed from generation to generation. Hard for outlanders to understand for this is hard land fought for with the lives of every generation that fought and held that in trust for the generation to come. This is what is destroyed not a few fields and houses but the hearts and souls of everyone of that community who had to loose their homes but watch the graves of their families torn up so even the dead were desicrated.

Very selfish perspective. These reservoirs give clean fresh drinking water to MILLIONS of people on a daily basis for years and years....and you're moaning about a few Welsh inbreds who lost a crappy cottage and back garden.

Agree with every word, absolutely. As an Englishman, I'm deeply ashamed that we allowed this to happen in our name. The destruction of Capel Celyn was beyond wrong. The fact that the water was never actually needed only makes this atrocity even more insulting. People of Wales, I am so very sorry. We had no right to do this, and I wish with all my heart that we could undo it. You deserved better.

Thanks for sharing. I was there around the same time and remember, even though it was quite busy with people exploring, it was eerily quiet; just a strong breeze blowing. It was a hot summer and I will never forget being there; we hadn't had rain for so long and there was talk of a severe water shortage. The old bridge was still visible and strangely still had a stream of water running below it towards the remaining waters of the reservoir. I still have photos of the cemetery wall with freshly painted writing all over them, cursing the English for flooding the valley.

I'm currently producing a non profit documentary on the history of Capel Celyn and how the flooding has shaped Wales as a nation. I spent a lot of time there in the summer while the water levels were low and I found it to be an incredibly sobering experience. I was wondering would it be possible to use some of your footage for our documentary? Full credit to you of course :).

As a Welshman I find it disgusting that people are a little too short sighted to see or understand that the people in nearby lowlands will need drinking water. There has to be a point where this sorts of rhetoric is let lie. Some of the comments are quite absurd. Government failings have led to wales not gaining from the requirements of our water. I thank them for that requirement, my home of north wales has beautiful lakes and reservoirs because of it.

Just learned about Capel Celyn. Fascinating, yet sad story. This footage is amazing on so many levels. The town's main road and wall still there. The enormity of the water that was dried up by the drought. I have one question since I have yet to come across an answer. Were the residence compensated fairly for having to give up their village?

+Mark Casta . Hi Mark, thank you for watching my video. There has been a feature in a local newspaper recently that might interest you about the history, I am unsure about any compensation payments. www.dailypost.co.uk/news/north-wales-news/tryweryn-shock-plans-flood-snowdonia-10240443

+JBRebel I saw a short Pathe piece done in the late 50's that mentioned that they were still trying to decide whether compensation would be in money or land. That leads me to conclude that some sort of payment was made. Considering that resevoir owners sell the water to other towns, the people of Capel Celyn surely received a pittance compared to what they gave up. Thank you for responding!

This was a Welsh speaking, living community that was destroyed with no thought or respect for the culture or people of the village: they were born there, their ancestors were buried there...and worst of all the Welsh weren't even asked - it was just taken with the usual arrogant disregard of the English.

@0:42 you can see the foundation of the church and the walled cemetery with concrete poured over it's entirety. If the bodies were moved, why did they pour a cement pad over it?

8 bodies were moved, the rest were left in situ and concreted over. I believe the headstones were relocated to the memorial church built nearby using some of the stone from the original chapel.

The reply was No. I should have known shouldnt I. They had no idea the devastation that occured here just so that L iverpool could have water. So Very Very sad indeed.
