Cape Wrath Trail Reflections & Overview

#capewrathtrail
Thank you so much for watching my Cape Wrath trail series and supporting me through it. Here is my overview video of how I found the 230 mile hiking trail and what tips I'd give if you fancy walking the route yourself. This was such a lovely journey and I really wanted to share my experience and what I learnt. I just scratch the surface as it would end up being hours long...
LONGER VIDEO HAHA!
This is a long video, so sit back with a brew and enjoy. Thanks again and take care xo

Thanks- one thing I found useful when camping You can buy 50 or so empty ‘boil in the bag’ bags for only 2-3 quid from kitchen shops like Lakeland or online . I put individual portions of porridge, raisins etc in each one and add a couple of scoops of Marvel. Just pour in the hot water straight from the stove. They weigh nothing This way you know at a glance how many breakfasts for each day of the trip you have left. More importantly you can have milky porridge without accidentally spilling a large bag of everywhere, or having to scrap/clean any pot.

Nice to watch about Cap Wrath. I went to UK in 2018, first in Corwall and then, step by to step to Scotland, hiking, biking, running and canoeing. Cap Wrath is a kind of mythic place and I wanted to do it by kayaking despite people saying to me that it was dangerous. So I got a very good 3 days weather opportunity to do it from South to North, camping on beach. But unfortunately I lost the key of my car-roof where I put my paddles!! I found it at the end of the first day and said bye-bye to my 3 days kayaking trip. But I started the trip from the North and did half of the way in round trip. I can say that the water is very very cold there, the currents stron, and the landscape very wild. Nobody on the way. Next day the weather changed and I could have seen what Wrath means... from the shore. In your video I have learnt how I can call the big holes we can find on the wet terrain, somehow dangerous: bogs which you have tested with your poles )) I watch with pleasure that you don't skimp your gear and have a pretty heavy backpack, better for your comfort and your security. So do I, regardless the lightweiht fashion. Best regard, Dundjack (France)

Yes I’ve been snarled by the Bog Monster on a few occasions, the slimy beast within puts up a good battle to swallow first your legs, then your body and finally your head. I’ve had to beat the monster into submission with my pacer poles too.

Same but I was lucky I dropped straight down but my pack save me from going further, swamp area on ex, weight of pack was 45 plus kgs, got towed out and called every called every name under the sun. Was still shaking hrs later, it does sap your strength. Good on you 4 handling. All the best. Had 2 share. Ps this is in newzealand. God bless.

Well done on completing your trek, I really enjoyed the series, it brought back quite a few memories as you passed through a lot of very familiar territory that I am very unlikely to visit ever again for various reasons. Gear lists are interesting things. The usual weight of my gear back in the 80's 90's for spring through autumn was around 12 kilos all in, including food for around 3 days or so. No camera, phone, walking poles or electronics. Honed everything to a bare minimum over time. Saunders jetpacker tent, Condor rucksack (65 litres is all you need) down bag w 600 grms fill, opinel, spoon, map, compass, whistle, sigg bottle, edilrid scorpion, stove, pot, karrimat and a family size pack of chocolate homewheat biscuits, and you could go anywhere in the hills. I still have most of the gear, but not the biscuits, they're long gone. I actually went and looked my gear out after the second episode, touched it a bit, then stuck back in the box where it resides. The last time I used that old tent in some heavy Scottish weather it leaked like a sieve with the horizontal rain.

Something I got taught by an ex RMC was to empty the bottle of talcum powder into a dry bag that’s big enough for you to put your foot in. Then when you need to talc your feet you just stick them in the bag and it just makes it easier to get between your toes and everything without it going everywhere. x

On the Kendall's mint cake, not sure how long they have been around, but I'm sure I was eating them in the mid sixties while hiking. I caught Lymes in Scotland. I've been in the Highlands since 1984 and had loads of ticks but never Lymes. This time it was really itchy and I had the tell tale bullseye rash. Within 2 weeks I was feeling shit. Constant headaches, dizzy spells, faint. Went to doctor and went straight on antibiotics. After that I was fine. That's my experience. Now I use Permethrin on my clothing and repellent on my body. Don't let it stop you enjoying the wilderness, just take precautions.

The sawyer squeeze (not mini) has a better flow rate, and use 2 cnoc bags and hang one on your bag as you walk. There's a connector you can buy that joins the two together so the exit end of the filter has the blue bag attached and the end that attaches to your bottle has the "dirty" water bag attached. I use an orange coloured to hold dirty and blue for the filter. So I attach the orange to my bag and dander as it filters into the blue bag.

I love your enthusiasm after doing this trail! I would love to get over to the UK or Europe. This may be at or near the top of my list for potential UK backpacking trips. I've only seen one of those huge gas cans before. On my hike of the Appalachian trail I was just south of Harpers Ferry and met a south bound hiker that was just starting out from there. He had one of those. I didn't even know they made them that big at the time. I was kind of shocked. I only used my stove for dinners and I went through exactly 3 of the 220g/8oz canisters in 5.5 months.

You did such a great job presenting your trip and I still mis coming home to a new installment of your adventure. I bet you really missed being on-trail as well and probably went through some depression going home since it becomes a life style, (at least I do at the end of my trips so, sorry for being presumptuous if that's not so). You are so skilled at documenting your journey and enable your viewers to really feel like they are tagging along. You are unpretentious and maintain your poise, staying on-task to get the job done despite the adversities you encountered. This de-briefing is really important and interesting as well. SUPER JOB, GIRL OUTDOORS, and Thank You for bringing so many of us the beauty and joy of your journey!!!

Your Cape Wrath Trail video adventure was extra outstanding and wonderfully done. Scotland is a beautiful place. It is better to have it and not need it than not have and need it. Good planning is key to a successful trip and you planned very well then next time you will know just what you will need. Noticed you have 117K subscribers now. Even this video is well put together and noticed your set up close to the relief station. Crack on and have a wonderful day.

I watched Haze Outdoors (KZreadr) walking the Cape Wrath trail and he came across several dead deer in several rivers - probably best to always filter your drinking water! But good you didn't get sick!
