    What I like the most about the .500 and .577 Nitro Express calibers is that you can use military projectiles from the .50 BMG and the 14.5x114mm in their cartridge cases, the Armor Piercing rounds would have great effectiveness against Dangerous Game.

    Great video! One nice thing about hunting buff at sunset is that they don't like to run off far--even after being shot. I once shot one at sunset and he ran around in a circle to exactly the same place. The 2nd shot was right next to the first. If you haven't tried the camo umbrella trick, give it a try. Holding the umbrella out front while you try and hunker down behind it and advance to the buff. Breaks up the outline. I'll be hunting with Adam (last safari of the season) and maybe the umbrella will come in handy for the "short rains". Oh well... ;)

    Your Alex Henry .577 is a beautiful and priceless work of art. It has a surprisingly short barrel for such a large caliber rifle. I guess it is a converted shotgun though. I’ll bet it feels like getting punched in the shoulder by Mike Tyson every time you fire it too. Glad to see you enjoying retirement and doing what you love most. Hope you, Monty and Norm are all well.

    Number first!! Great history on the 577 - the Scotts made very good weapons and those in the know would value a Scottish shotgun above some of the British legends. One wonders why, when a well placed 30-06 (Roosevelt’s African Safari) will bring down an elephant, they pursued the nitro cartridges and the bigger skeleton shakers, the “mamers” as you call them. My .375 and .458 are a big enough “belt” for me. Thanks for the content.

  • @HaNsWiDjAjA

    @HaNsWiDjAjA

    The 577 was meant as a "stopping rifle", an ideal weapon for following dangerous game into thick bush, where one may have to shoot at a charging beast at very short range with less than ideal shot placement. If one read the writings of professional ivory hunters in the early 20th century, say James Sutherland and J.A. Hunter, their .577 were generally carried by a tracker and only handed to the hunter when going into the thick stuff. For picked shots in open ground they would use a light rifle that they carried themselves, say a .318 Westley Richards or 6.5x54mm Mannlicher. Roosevelt might have used a .30-06, but his professional hunter was known to have wielded a pair Holland & Holland. 500/450 rifle.

    I have not fished with a spinning rod in more than 60 years. I picked up a fly rod early in my life and have yet to put it down at 68. As for your .577 N.E., it's a nice and well-loved, and care-for rifle. I personally would not mind the blemishes, it's been carried shot, and hunted with. Not a safe queen. My guess ammo is an issue these days.

    Hello Alain! Your double horizontal rifle, an Alex Henry, is both classic & most beautiful! But why 4 shots at close range to put down this buff with your .577? What bullet, make & type, is in your/these hunting cartridge's? Also, all fresh-water fish from muddy water ponds or in mud, after fileting should/must soak in fresh water for at least 6 hours to cleanse their muddy taste! Andrew, still in Lviv, west Ukraine

    Greetings. I waited on your video so I could enjoy it with my morning coffee. I have a question . . . For a very long time, you used a Winchester M70 in the venerable 375 Holland. Now, you've been using a Gunwerks 375 Ruger. What are your feelings between these rifles and cartridges ?

  • @JAlainSmith

    @JAlainSmith

    3 жыл бұрын

    Short version is; I was in love with the 375 HH but since using the Gunwerks Skull in 375 Ruger I have found it to be a real pounder on Buff and elephant. It's a super accurate round with no more recoil than the HH so I have been using it for several years as my light gun on antelope etc. as well.

    First shot (16.52 )on the buffalo looks like middle of the body about 15 inches from the top. Thats why it starts running. Lucky it went all the way back. It could have been a long sad tracking. But thats hunting, nobodys perfect.
