Great video! One nice thing about hunting buff at sunset is that they don't like to run off far--even after being shot. I once shot one at sunset and he ran around in a circle to exactly the same place. The 2nd shot was right next to the first. If you haven't tried the camo umbrella trick, give it a try. Holding the umbrella out front while you try and hunker down behind it and advance to the buff. Breaks up the outline. I'll be hunting with Adam (last safari of the season) and maybe the umbrella will come in handy for the "short rains". Oh well... ;)

Your Alex Henry .577 is a beautiful and priceless work of art. It has a surprisingly short barrel for such a large caliber rifle. I guess it is a converted shotgun though. Number first!! Great history on the 577 - the Scotts made very good weapons and those in the know would value a Scottish shotgun above some of the British legends. One wonders why, when a well placed 30-06 (Roosevelt’s African Safari) will bring down an elephant, they pursued the nitro cartridges and the bigger skeleton shakers, the “mamers” as you call them. My .375 and .458 are a big enough “belt” for me. Thanks for the content.

The 577 was meant as a "stopping rifle", an ideal weapon for following dangerous game into thick bush, where one may have to shoot at a charging beast at very short range with less than ideal shot placement. If one read the writings of professional ivory hunters in the early 20th century, say James Sutherland and J.A. Hunter, their .577 were generally carried by a tracker and only handed to the hunter when going into the thick stuff. For picked shots in open ground they would use a light rifle that they carried themselves, say a .318 Westley Richards or 6.5x54mm Mannlicher. Roosevelt might have used a .30-06, but his professional hunter was known to have wielded a pair Holland & Holland. 500/450 rifle.
