While not a Capcom game, this whole game kind of reminds me of an old PS2 game called "Spy Fiction" that had a troubled directionless production and resulted in a game that tried to be Metal Gear Solid at first and then turns into something else.

honestly I wish capcom had the guts to ignore the fan backlash. Sometimes fans just can't see the full picture until they have it. Imagine if Wind Waker changed it's art style in response to the backlash from western fans. That's not to say "never listen to fans" but, you know, sometimes they're wrong.
That Saturday morning cartoon aesthetic with the playable commercials sounded really fun and at the very least it would have been a lot more memorable than the final product ended up being. Such a shame that it got scrapped because people were like "This does not appeal to me personally so it must suck"

Hey now, with all the remasters of 6th and 7th gen Capcom games hitting places like Steam and current consoles, such as Okami and Onimusha, there's never been a better time for Capcom to remaster Spacebots
I mean the Capcom fans didn’t like a game that was on a console most of them didn’t take it seriously anyway. So tbh I don’t understand the need to throw out the unique original ideas for things that were generically popular just to appease a demographic that wasn't the target. They took an IP that could’ve been a cult hit and made it less known than ninja breadman, good job Capcom.

Oh man, who would've guessed that overreacting to backlash from people that aren't necessarily your target audience and crushing all the interesting or unique ideas out of a game with like a year to launch would result in a rushed, bland game? Honestly I think the biggest mistake they made was presenting it at Captivate first, and making it stand toe to toe with the legacy franchises. If it had just, say, been a quiet extra on Nintendo's show floor that year, the idea of it "not being capcom enough" might have been alleviated more.
Man… maybe I’m alone here, but I kinda dug the first version of Spyborgs a whole lot. I love tongue in cheek homages to Saturday Morning Cartoons and this looked supremely in my wheelhouse! 2000’s gamers just don’t know how to have fun, I guess

I've always found it odd how the gaming community had a knee-jerk reaction against things that appeared cartoonish. It's like how people got legitimately at Wind Waker because a more animated style was used? I don't know if teenagers and adults of the 2000's were insecure about how their hobby was perceived or what. I was still a kid during the 2000's so all of this discourse was going on without my awareness. At least the trend of enforced grittiness has passed for the most part.
@Damian_1989

The 2000s were the years of the Matrix sequels, Deus Ex, Doom 3... everyone was stuck in their "edgy" phase.
They should've stuck with the original theme. It sounded like it had real character and was unique, especially in comparison to its finished product. This is why you can't pander too much to players' or their opinions, because often the loudest are the short-sighted minority. I don't see what's so bad with having a game for a younger crowd, because that crowd will become the adults that grew up with Spiro or Rachet and Clank, etc. and will be loyal to a great game for years to come. Seems like Capcom shot themselves in the foot with this one. A little less micromanaging and a little more faith and they might have had a fleshed-out franchise with a dedicated fanbase.

High Voltage threads were so much fun back in the day. This topic is really interesting to me. Also, the vaporware known as "Sadness" and other similar shit "announced" for the Wii.
I've been catching up with the What Happened series for a little while now (I've seen around 80 or so episodes so far, and I'm hoping to be fully caught up by late March/early April), and-real talk-it's become my new favorite series on KZread! I love absolutely everything about it...the information, the humor, the entertainment value, the editing, the skeletal avatar...all of it! I just cannot help but find myself coming back to see all the episodes I've missed over the past four years, as well as all of the new ones as they go live. They are as entertaining as they are informative, and it clearly shows that you and your team put a ton of effort into these videos (with great success, I might add). Needless to say, I look forward to continuing to catch up with all the What Happened episodes I have yet to see, rewatch the whole series likely later this year, and check out each new episode as they come our way. You have most certainly earned my subscription and my patronage, Matt...keep up the fantastic work!
Spyborg's original Saturday Morning Cartoon themes and aesthetics sounds so incredibly interesting and engaging then what they changed to, it's honestly a shame. If they had stuck to the original vision, I doubt it would have been an instant hit but I would instead see it become something more akin to a cult classic like Psychonauts that would have racked up fame and goodwill over time.

another comparison would be wind waker (kinda). At release it got bashed for the cartoony artistic direction and slow pace leading to a slow sales start (although it did reach a decent level of sales). However it's had a reevaluation that's been happening with a lot of games from that era and has become somewhat of a success story (the somewhat being nintendo continuing to shoot themselves in the foot and not releasing the HD edition on a MORE POPULAR CONSOLE!).
That commercial mini-game idea is really clever.
Damn, a shame that such a fun, interesting pitch was thrown to a 10 story window because fans of the time wanted it to be a game that was made by Capcom
The Team Alpha Go concept art looked great, it's too bad the actual game couldn't have been more like that.
I think we can all agree the late 2000s were pretty wild in quality.
Looking at all of these weird flops from this era of Capcom, it's a miracle that Dead Rising and Lost Planet managed to both have comparatively much more successful trilogies.
"Hey we wanna make an action platformer for kids! We have a clear idea of the budget and technology required, and a ton of experienced staff to help make it a reality!" "Great! We love it! But our fans--who probably aren't your target audience anyway--want it to be darker and more combat focused. Let's dump all that lighthearted character nonsense." "Um... okay, we'll just throw away all that work and focus solely on the brawling. Does this work?" "Great! But now it looks like a boring budget title, and frankly, we aren't interested anymore. We're cutting way back on our investment and we expect you to deliver whatever build you've got ASAP. Looking forward to working with you again!"
Capcom USA did do some online promotion for Syborgs beyond the mini-series, and it was really weird. They tried to hype it up as a sort of modern-day return to the old-school beat-em-ups of yore by talking about all the stuff that Spyborgs carried over... Like an elevator level. Yes, Capcom USA literally used "Every great brawler has an elevator level!" as a way to help promote Spyborgs.
@Rangaisia
2 жыл бұрын
To be fair, a lot of classic brawlers did have elevator sections, all classic Final Fights had one, as did all the classic Street of Rage games (SoR2 had like 3 elevator sections). Though not all great brawlers necessarily had one, Capcom's own Warriors of Fate for instance.
I'm sort of blaming the fans on this one. Their demands sunk what could have been a wonderfully goody time.
That therapy line is gold. Gaming marketing people are under appreciated, who else is dumb enough to come up with that
This is where publishers really screw over devs. Imagine spending hours and hours and putting your blood sweat and tears into a game only to have another studio ship it behind your back and then you go bust!

I'm sure it happens way more than most of us even realize. Had a college professor who still (sort of) works in the industry who had a similar story with a different company.
Can't believe Hatred is still not on the channel/this series
So to summarize, Capcom: 1. Stripped out the main thing that made the game unique, forcing a bland samey world (which was then torn apart by critics because it wasn't unique). 2. Attempted to extort free labor from the studio by withholding their funding. 3. Barely advertised the game. 4. Went behind the back of devs (who were still on schedule), to ship a beta version of the game and completely kneecap the project. I'd agree that the failures of games around this time contribute to Capcom's current incredibly safe business style, but this was 100% on them. They took a promising young studio and fought them at every step of the way. Capcom killed Bionic Games and they killed them hard.
Honestly surprised that they didn't sue Capcom over that stunt of secret fixing studio. Guess they didn't have money for litigation.
The original vision more in line with Ratchet & Clank and commercial mini-games would've been something I'd definitely been interested at that time, it's a shame it never shaped up like the devs originally intended.
That quote at the end was the most 90s gaming advertising quote ever, but was from 2009
It's okay, within a few decades after we were all fully convinced Capcom developed Alzheimer's when the mere mention of this game comes up, we'll have an announcement for Exoborgs.

Mr. Muscles, have you considered an episode on Square Enix’s classic The Quiet Man?
I remember buying this game shortly after it's release only because I stumbled across it in a store and thought it looked cool. I still think it's pretty fun and I like all the playable characters, but the mixed score is very accurate. You've seen the whole game after the first level, it gets very repetitive, and the last 2 levels (if you stick with the game that long) are way WAY too long.

I certainly didn't get Spyborgs at launch, but I did eventually and recall having a decent bit of fun with it. This is a pretty wild ride, though. Had no idea about the original vision for the game. Leaning into the Saturday morning cartoon thing seemed cool, and the playable commercials even more so. What a shame.
As someone who was avidly subscribed to 2 different Wii-centric magazines at the time, this video is the first time I've ever heard of this game. I legit saw the title and thought you were talking about Cyberbots. I mean even Capcom flops like Gaist Crusher had an anime made, so this thing might be the most obscure IP they've ever put out.
15:26 seeing Okami in that "few other failures" popup makes me very sad.
Oh my god I actually had this game when it came out. Never beat it and later sold it. Can't remember if I just got bored of it real quick or if I struggled with the difficulty.
I actually worked at EB Games when this game launched... We got ONE copy. One! So that 600 sales number Does not seem unreasonable.
This was actually the first ever capcom game I ever played and I actually sorta loved it (though I should say I was around 8-9 years old) Though from what I remember, I enjoyed it
Matt, your offbeat and deadpan comedy is always so memorable and wittily timed. Love this series, can't wait for every Saturday!
I keep mixing up Spyborgs with Disney's Spectrobes franchise at first glance; their covers both have that "generic sci-fi action surrounded in blue" aesthetic. Speaking of which, Disney's original output in that era of gaming is ripe for exploration. The aforementioned Spectrobes, that Clue homage Guilty Party... imagine how things would be if they still had enough faith to pursue unique game-first properties like that.
I love these videos. Only found your channel fairly recently. Thoroughly enjoy learning about obscure titles, and your editing and scripting is stellar.
The real crime here was the loss of Bionic Games Spyborgs always kinda looked "eh", but the talent behind it was solid, they could've easily learned from this and improved on their next project, but that next project would never be.
I swear to God this game was being published by Disney Interactive (and not confusing it with Spectrobes). This is wild to me. I remember watching it fairly close back in the day
I never got this game, but I definitely remember it in the lead up to its release. The Wii was quite starved for quality third-party stuff even by Nintendo console standards, so even the faintest whiff of something that had even the slightest hope of being decent would catch the attention of Nintendo stans of the time (myself included). The promise of a new IP from Capcom got people excited and they were really hoping for something that was a bit darker in tone (something that the Wii was also lacking in). The disappointment at the initial reveal makes a lot more sense in that context, but the backlash was kind of a shame since it seems the final product was much worse off for its resulting shift in tone.
"Capcom, what's a Spyborg?" "Well it's not quite a spy and not quite a cyborg, but oh man hahaha, so to answer your question I don't know."
I binged all the what happened videos for the past couple of weeks and I was waiting for this and then it happened. AMAZING

I totally would have loved the Saturday Morning Aesthetic they would have had going here over the "BLAND BROWN GRIT! BLAND BROWN GRIT!"
I enjoy that the title and thumbnail have to explain that this is a Capcom game because nobody’s heard of it. I had this game! I got it secondhand at GameStop a year or two later. I did indeed think it was difficult and more tedious than most beat ‘em ups, even contemporary 3D ones like a Sengoku Basara I never knew it was 1. Obscure or 2. Infamous among the audience that does know about it
Probably didn't help that Spyborgs was a 90's af name, and that DEFINATLY was not the style at the time.
Would love to see one of these on Fuse or Brutal Legend!
You always do such excellent research! I'd love to see a look into the IP that nearly bankrupted the LEGO Company in the early 2000's: *Galidor: Defenders of the Outer Dimension*
This is a prime example of why listening to the fans it’s not often a good idea cause some game ideas are unique but just because some fans want a dark ooooh edgy game doesn’t mean I’ll sell especially a freaking Wii title also I wish they sold this Idea to Nintendo or THQ or some other studio that are known for those types of ideas

Ah, yes, the Capcom game that was most likely an elaborate prank and doesn't actually exist.
You know, Capcom should have paired this project with their old arcade beat 'em up, Armored Warriors. It'd make for an interesting reboot/AU and fit in with Capcom's arcade history.
Man if Spyborgs stuck to it's original vision, it could've been a much better game and more focused too, looks like something I would've played at the time if they stuck to the Saturday Morning Cartoon thing they had going for it.
Okay, one game studio I am super curious to see you tackle in this series is Golgoth Studio, the makers of Magical Drop V and the Toki remake.
Picked up this game a couple of months ago and had fun with what I played. Reminds me of the X-Men Legends/Marvel Ultimate Alliance games with its mechanics.

Literally the only reason I knew of this game existence beforehand is because Matt mentioned it in a What Happened video about Capcom before.
One of these days you’ll cover Babylons fall and I will patiently wait for that.
Resident Evil Survivor needs an episode of What Happened?
"It was originally more cartoonish but it then was changed to be more gritty and serious" this basically defines so many things around the late 2000s early 2010s. No wonder Indie games eventually exploded when it seemed like all AAA developers (sans Nintendo) basically forgot the "game" in the word "videogames". It's like both people playing and the guys in charge of decisions for games just forgot to have fun because they wanted to be the next Call of Duty, God of War or whatever.
A shame when Capcom's creative side has been put on the shelve for the familiar these days because of mistakes like this. The original concept for Spyborgs sounds more interesting than the game we got but it's unfortunate that it didn't turn out that way. Almost reminds me a lot of Insomniac's Overstrike before it got changed to Fuse when EA's test audience didn't respond to it. That game deserves it's own What Happened? episode. (For the record, I did get Spyborgs some time after it's release but couldn't get into it)
Hearing the spiel for the initial idea made me wonder how the hell THAT game got on this show.. I am beyond disappointed.
That quote at the end is so cheesy good it just radiates earnest hype. Love it.
13:17 Never would I have ever guessed you'd bring up MySims Agents of all things. On a related note: MySims Agents is really good and you should definitely try it.
could you do a What Happened on Chibi-Robo? i think a potential factor in it's decline was when Park Patrol was sold _only_ at Wal-Mart (and then all of Zip Lash to be honest. such a wild shift in form for the series usually doesn't work out) love your work!
Capcom... I feel like I have a love-hate relationship with them. So Capcom played themselves by shipping an unfinished game to market, because of their own greed. And now thanks to their own greed, they make less games for fans to enjoy. I was thinking about that the other day, why Capcom doesn't make a lot of games anymore. It almost feels like the only games that exist to capcom are, street fighter, resident evil, and monster hunter. I wish they would make smaller b or c products, such as the ghost and goblin remake, or even mega Man 11. I would like more games from them. They don't have to be huge Blockbusters that cause billions and millions of dollars to make. However, I guess due to gross mismanagement and corporate greed, I guess us gamers have to pay the price.
Not appreciating the subliminal NoHo sass. But I love how the editor put the studio’s sign on a restaurant
Oh damn that box art. I had no idea what this was until I saw that and was filled with Prerelease Wii Coverage memories.
Capcom difficulty swapped from gameplay to actually finishing the game
