Hello and welcome to The Gold Coast Art School channel!
This week it's all about CANVAS BOARDS. I'm starting to wonder if Australians call these things boards, while other places are more likely to say "canvas panel". Both are correct and make sense when talking about this surface you can use for your paintings.
When you're looking for art materials, you probably want to know "What are the pros and cons of using XYZ in my art?" Canvas boards have a lot of benefits that will get you started quickly and easily with your painting. But, they also have some negatives! Fingers crossed this review will help you discover what will suit you best.

Since 1995, we've been teaching creatives how to successfully paint and draw (even when they think they can't!) We have classes for beginners and intermediates, and welcome advanced artists too. Many of our students love coming to our school not only for the depth of knowledge our tutors bring to each session, but for our relaxed and welcoming community feel. Our adult art students usually use oil paints, but we encourage any medium, including acrylics, pastels and watercolours. Check out our social media and website for info, or email/call us any time to chat to Jess and book your spot in our next class!

*Big question: do you call these "canvas boards" or "canvas panels"?* I called them boards because that's what I know them as, but then looked up info later and everyone calls them "panels"! 🤔 Interested to know your experience! 🌟 Jess

Hi. Interesting to see those bigger boards. I'm somewhat new at painting, so I haven't locked down calling them boards or panels. I noticed on the back of mine, they say "canvas panel". I have also accumulated an amount of the small mdf board/panels. Lately, I have been taping off rectangle shapes on canvas sheets out of my canvas pad. I hope to make a new vid soon. 🙂

@@natesoilpaints That's good insight! Oh yeah, those mdf boards can be lovely to paint on as well. Check out some folk-art videos, as quite often there's particular types of acrylic paints folk artists use on wood. Comes up a real treat! It's pretty fun to try different surfaces and see what suits your style 🙂

I bought Canvas boards from Blick, and they warp like crazy! I have heard about 4 x 8 x 1/4" aluminum sheets which should work really well if sanded with a fine grit. Any thoughts on that?

You discuss only cardboard-backed panels, while I would like to paint on unstretched canvas and glue the finished painting to a rigid panel. Have you any experience using panels with more durable backing?

You could glue it onto particle board, or a good quality ply. It's a similar process to stretching a new canvas onto board. Just make sure the board you use is indeed rigid enough to take the canvas, as it will be pulled as the glue dries.

ok so I came across this video of yours when I searched for a way to clean my canvas panel from mildew (before painting on it), but I didn't get any tip or tricks or anything as such so far. I would like to really know how to clean them off and properly maintain my art post-painting. Please reply to my comment as soon as possible, i just wanna paint something on it before the idea just poofs off my head ... if you know what i mean.

Hi there! This isn't a very quickly reply, sorry about that. Dad says: wash it off as much as possible with soap and water, and then apply a light bleach solution, let it rest and then wash it off. The bleach should kill off the mildew. This should work, as long as it is a blank canvas. Once done, you should re-gesso the canvas. We hope this helps! 🙂 Jess
