Cantor Sidney Shicoff - Ahavas Olom

Cantor Sidney Shicoff, (father of Neil Shicoff) was born in 1920 in New York City.
His father, a baker from the Kiev region, became a self taught cantor and father and son sang at weddings and in synagogues in the NY area. Sidney's first major engagement was for High Holiday services at the Stone Avenue Synagogue in Brooklyn. He concertized and officiated at Catskill hotels such as Grossinger's, The Concord, Pines and Shenk's; he also sang at Carnegie Hall, The Brooklyn Academy of Music, Severance Hall, and Madison Square Garden. Cantor Shicoff was also the host of a Jewish program on Radio Station WEVD in New York in the '50s and participated in the film "Kol Nidre".
He died of a heart attack in 1965, at age 45

What a tragedy, dying so young. May his memory be for a blessing.

I had the privilege of studying with the same voice teacher as Neil Shicoff, Raymond Buckingham, may his memory be for a blessing.

Part of Neil's talent came from his father, a well-known Cantor with the sound which calls and beckons us towards our Judaic past. Within us it awakens that part of us with a Jewish heritage from the sleep of apathy in recognizing the depth and scope of our roots and the suffering, joys and accomplishments of our forefathers.

Thanks every so much for this video, ever since his son spoke about this father I have been looking for a recording. And yes, the similarity is there.

A further comment -- Both Neil and Sidney Shicoff have incredibly beautiful voices; equally valid, though they presented God's gift differently to the world. 62chairman1.

Thank you, SHICOFF1, for your comments! I am now very hopeful that Neil Shicoff may yet honor us with a CD recording of heartfelt cantorial and/or Jewish/Yiddish songs. It would be priceless!! 62chairman1 in reply to SHICOFF1.

Both father and son have outstanding voices. I do prefer the tone of the voice of Neil. He is a little softer sounding than the father.

Many thanks to MarioLanza55 for the info and this clip which I play periodically. There's such a solemnity in Sidney Shicoff's voice that speaks to the heart. Neil was a cantor himself for about three years and I've longed for a CD from Neil of the Jewish Liturgy. I have "Welcoming The Sabbath" by Richard Tucker. Certainly such a CD is in Neil Shicoff's birthright. If not Neil Shicoff, then who?. 62chairman1.

In my Bronx childhood,( seem to remember that Hazonim Maurice (Moshe) Gantchoff and Sidney Shicoff were on WEVD on Sundays. I much preferred Shicoff who somehow never got the publicity that others got.
