Canted Reticle Troubleshooting 1

Спорт

Many times, the traditional two-bubble-level technique with one on the receiver and one on the top of the scope’s elevation turret works just fine. In other cases, we can’t rely on the stacked tolerances of the elevation turret to be fully accurate for a perfect level. In those cases, we need to go with something like a plum bob. We’ll talk all about the plum bob method and some tips and tricks you can use to get a better level on your riflescope right here. If you have any questions, let us know at 1-800-426-0048 Ext. 5 or in the comments below with #AskVortex and your question might get answered right here.

    Thank you. My pellet gun scope rings were semi loose when I bought it. After shooting 100 22 pellets or so I noticed the scope had slid backwards. So I loosened the rings more, slid it forward, but my scope leveling kit is too big for the small scope. This is my savior of going to the gunsmith and giving him 50 bucks to do it for me. Update: Well after hanging a plum-bob, much to my amazement the FixIt Sticks scope jack exactly set the vertical reticle line at exactly 90 degrees to the horizon. I couldn't believe, but I had to believe what I was seeing. Still looks off to me. No matter, my first magazine dump of eight shots at 63 yards went God knows where. Next, I have to learn to zero my scope, then learn to shoot. Going to be a long learning curve, but fun.

    I have a scope that just got sent back for reticle cant. I leveled the reticle with a plumb line about 16 feet long at 75 yards with the rifle itself leveled by the bolt raceways. The reticle holdovers worked perfectly out to 500. When dialing with no holdover out to the same distance it resulted in no rounds on steel. The cant in the reticle led to lateral movement when dialing vertically and miss after miss until windage was dialed as well. So the cant did indeed cause tracking issues. Just something to look out for if you are skeptical of the relationship between you turret and reticle.

    @@timkourbo3196 It was a Nikon Monarch 3 4-16×50. Holdovers with a plumb reticle at 75 yards and good D.o.p.e would get me out to 500 on the bdc reticle, the same adjustment in moa on the turrets always led to diagonal p.o.i. shift. Nikon told me that they acknowledged the fault and the repair exceeded the value of the scope at the time. I was issued a full refund and gave that money to Burris for a 3-15x50 veracity that has performed with both holdovers and m.o.a. out to distance and back to zero with near boring repeatability to this day. The nikon had a definite issue that led to a dial OR holdover issue but now I can do either. Problem solved in my opinion.

    Two problems that can cause the crosshairs to be off: first, some rifles have no flat surface available to insure the stock/action are actually level--and remain level--while the scope crosshairs are being leveled and second, the scope can turn in the rings when the ring screws are being tightened down. How do you address these two issues.

  • @sniperkwg
    @sniperkwg2 жыл бұрын

    Obviously you need to make sure the rifle is level before you mount the scope. Plop a bubble level on the pic rail or on the rings with the top half removed. Level it and clamp it in place. Mount the scope then use the plumb bob.

    I am having this exact problem. I used a Scope Jack tool by FixIt Sticks which I was assuming was perfectly aligning my scope to my rifle. I have a bubble level mounted in the Picatinny rail on the rifle. The rifle is on a bipod in front and uni-pod in back. The rifle body is reading level. I used the scope jack according to directions, but my reticle is not quite vertical; maybe 2 degrees off at the most. I will double check with the plumb bob method and see what's going on. Thanks for posting.

    Leveled rifle, leveled scope rail, leveled scope. They all line-up. Went to the range and was getting pretty good results once the scope was dialed in. Here's my problem, my EYE sees the scope horizon line as crooked when it is leveled (I have a scope-mounted bubble level) so the problem is not the scope, the problem is ME!!! How do you get around that, because I now realize I can't trust myself because my idea of level is not leveled at all! Is there a way of positioning my head or body to slowly work through this? I am fairly tall at almost 6'5" and have a pretty long neck and I read somewhere that the taller you are and the longer your neck is, the greater the cant. Is there any truth to this? Any help is greatly appreciated.

    I have the same problem. I leveled everything with a Wheeler Level kit. Barrel, turret, bubble level on pic rail, but when I look through the scope and rely on the bubble level, my sight view is canted about 10 degrees (down to the left). I did this process 3 more times and put my rifle away until I can figure out the issue. When I put the rifle in the vice, everything looks fine, but when I look down the scope prone, it all goes sideways (pun intended) For me to get a flat reticle, my bubble is to the far left of the bubble level. If you have solved this issue, or identified the cause please share. Thanks

    Will the flashlight method work to align a scope mounted anti cant level? If so, does the reticle need to be perfectly aligned with the rifle?

  • @VortexOpticsUSA

    @VortexOpticsUSA

    4 жыл бұрын

    Mounted anti cant level? Can you elaborate, please? Folks get a little too worried about reticle alignment and whether it should be to the earth, to the rifle or other. It's funny, because if you look at some of the best F Class shooters in the world, some of them literally mount their scopes at a 45 degree angle in the rings, so the reticle is like an "X" instead of a "+". For our recreational guns, we usually mount ours up at the range with minimal equipment and no bubble levels to be honest (Probably sounds bad, but it's true) and level by eye. On a PRS or competition gun, more time may be taken, but even still, we just use a bubble level on the inner turret and the top of the rail of the gun and match them up and it works well enough.

    @@eaznutts5714 Sorry just saw this - The biggest thing that matters when you shoot is that the reticle is level to the earth. Your gun can be canted, but if the reticle is level to the earth, that's what really matters. When it comes to setting the bubble level around your scope tube, get the reticle level to the earth when you are behind the gun in your shooting position with a plum bob (To rule out any cant you may impart on the gun just by getting in your natural shooting position), tighten the scope in place, then adjust the bubble level on the scope tube until it shows perfectly level with your reticle.

I believe it would work even farther, but my range has its rear targets and berm at 300. There's a reason precision 1,000+ yard shooters buy $200-$800+ scopes, while we who shoot sub 500 yards on a regular basis can get away nicely with cheap scopes.

    I have yet to see a leupold or even a nikon that the reticles are out of square with the turrets while the guns are level. If your turrets are not square with the reticle you no longer are moving straight up and down or left to right everything now adjusts at an angle. I am deeply disturbed by this video. Especially because you acknowledge that when the gun and turrets are level that the reticle should line up with the turrets. If the reticle is canted you now have a problem that needs to be fixed for long range shooting to have consistency and accuracy.

    It's not nonsense, plumb Bob's have been used for thousands of years. I have a construction background and have used that method many times. The problem is getting the rifle, with a round barrel to mate up properly. Then your rifle/scope once aligned, get the rifle hold to mount up so the reticle is perpendicular. Changing stock dimensions to "fit" correctly so you don't have to manipulate your cheek weld... so all line up. That is ideal. Off subject, but fit is mandatory for shotguns with the rear sight being your eye. Mid rib beads are quit revealing for those who cant the gun. My 2 cents
