Triode is the BETTER mode for tube operation...........any other mode is function of speaker limitations. If people prefer UL mode it's simply du for power gain and compensate for ( controlled speakers and damping factors ) speakers today are nor made for tube amplifiers .... but for performance instead of music ....nice pure high end sound sacrificing liberty of expression of colored high sensitivity units...colored doesn't mean distortion, but means that the speaker can express itself for what it's able to rproduce with out the constraint of being controlled by today trends in musical reproduction , mainly solid state with high damping factors and NFB...............

Ultra-linear gives you that solid-state sound, I think you meant to say; triode has more of a tubey sound.
