All of these videos are helping tremendously. especially because you focus on a lot of the movie aspects of the camera, which i'm more concerned with. this is a gold mine for amateurs that are new to photography, but even more so for amateurs who just purchased a T3i (myself).

3x is using sensor crop technique 10x is classic digital zoom That explains why 3x looks so good, because there is no actual digital zooming (enlarging) going on at all. Actually, there is probably some 10% upscaling at 3x, because of 5184/1920 = 2.7, but not much noticeable. Thanks for the video!

I forgot about this feature from when I was researching which camera to buy. On the subject of quality for the digital zoom, I think I remember reading that the video mode only uses a third of the sensor's 18mp capacity. Therefore you can zoom in to x3 without any loss in quality. I could be talking rubbish though :-) ! I filmed my daughter's 5th birthday day out a couple of days ago and wished I'd watched a few more of your tutorials before hand. Oh well better late than never. Thanks again!

Hi Dave, would the canon 1200d have the digital zoom feature ? I have noticed that the 1200d does have the display button and the same zoom buttons as the 600D. Thanks

Yes I agree 10 gives too degraded an image. I thought 5 times looked ok too but above that and quality suffered a lot. 3X seemed to give the safest option with excellent quality. Yeah I love my back yard... if only the weather was better here I would probably set up a tent and live in it to be honest :)

I have this problem with purple pixels on bottom of the video.. But only when i am at 3x digital zoom if i go more then that they go away but if i put it on 3x again they come back i dont know how to remove them... They are really anoying, if i am filming in 1080p it is all ok but if i turn on 3x digital zoom the pixels come back again... Can I fix that or will I always have those pixels on bottom when using digital zoom thank you for your answer! Sorry for my bad English

Hi my freind, i know this tutorial is many years ago i have just got the same camera, And want to video on a gimble with out having to focus (touch my camera ) Is there a option where the camera will focus by its self with out touching the camera once its recording? Regards

Very useful, indeed. Most of the lenses look quite good at 3X. At 10X I think the quality is degraded too much. What did you think of the range in-between? 5X, 7X? BTW, lovely back yard you have! :)

Does it work in photography mode?

You have to have dead-on focus pn your target or else the digitally zoomed image will look blurry. Here the statue was out of focus.

Can this be done in photo mode?

Canon removed this feature for all T series cameras after T3i.😩

You don't "pan" down, you "tilt". "Pan" is a term used for left-to-right movement (; Thanks for the video though, very helpful.

hehe thnx, I often get confused when talking to camera (my brain seems to operate at a different speed to my mouth when operating a camera:). BTW the digital zoom is a great feature and although Canon took it away for some bizzare reason on the 650D the guys at Magic Lantern re-enabled it !

Hmmm, I just ordered the T5i... not positive if it has that feature but then the kind of zoom I'd want for video would have to be really smooth to work with and not some tiny, awkward button push from the back of the camera, if that makes sense.

Yes its not a continuous zoom. Its more for use if you have a static shot and maybe just want to cut into a close up in post
