Canon's best Full Frame DSLR for the price in 2021 still? Canon 6D Mark II - Long term review

Ғылым және технология

This is my full review of the quite controversial Canon 6D mk II. Is this camera still up for the task in 2021? In this video I've analyzed this camera both from a photography and a videography stand point and came to a few conclusions. Let's take a look!

    I think that the camera manufactures will be the ones to end DSLR's as they hold the ultimate power in the market. My view as a Landscape Photographer and Vlogger is I want a easy to use reliable camera that produces a quality image that I'm happy with. DSLR's do that and will continue to do it. One plus point for me is that with the market move to mirrorless the cost of the 6Dmkii has come down to a point where I can now afford it! Happy days!!🤣👍📸

    As a hobby photographer, the 6D mkii was exactly what I wanted. I really wish we would stop judging these traditional photography cameras by video camera standards. This camera got trashed initially because it isn’t made for KZread/wedding videographers. But not every camera has to be.

    Yes, you did help. I've been using 6D MKII for about a year also and I never knew it had in-camera exposure bracketing. I found that if you bump up the sharpness just a hair, the video will look much better without looking oversharpened as it does in a smartphone. I was considering dropping down to the 90D but not sure I want to lose some of that depth of field (except when shooting landscapes trying to get sharpness front to back, then it would help), but I'd also lose some of the widest angles such as my 14mm that I like to use for landscapes and astro. a 90D would end up giving me about 21 at the widest with the lenses I have. I'm probably going to go mirrorless within the next year. Nice video, good information.

  • @MihaiStrömpl

    @MihaiStrömpl

    Thank you so much! Indeed there are some trade-offs you really need to consider. And for the wide-angle, most definitely you'd need to get another lens for the 90D.

    Thank you brother! And you're spot-on. I believe that's why Sony cameras aren't too attractive for many, the capabilities and specs are definitely there, however they are too technical and maybe too features-packed even? The menus aren't friendly at all either so there's that. But I definitely agree there's something about point and shoot photography, without fussing with too many settings, that is deeply enjoyable.

    Thank you! For me the (almost) perfect hybrid camera choice was the Fujifilm X-T4. But there are so many options today, it's hard to go wrong. It's more of a preference thing and of course, budget. But if you want to stay with Canon, as far as DSLRs go, the 80D is better for video, but has a crop sensor. Other than that, the R series (R6, R5) is a killer, but with a hefty price, which probably can't be justified for most people, that was my case as well.

  • @sportsshooter2574

    Great video Mihai! The 6D MKII is my 'go to' camera when I don't shot sports. It's an excellent all around body that gave my old EF lenses like the 24-105/f4 a new lease of life. The IQ is excellent. Add the EF 40mm on the 6D MKII and it's 'almost' mirroless. Most landscape photographers , as you said, would carry a tripod and filters so the dynamic range shouldn't be a big issue. Not for me anyway.

    Great review! However I do have to point out that as a landscape photographer I was really worried about buying this camera. I needed a full frame body and was on a budget. Gotta admit, moving from an entry level crop sensor body to the 6d mark2, I was actually quite satisfied with DR. Compared to more expensive models, it might not be the best, but I never found it limiting in any way and I do push my edits quite far. If there is a bit of noise at times, I can easily correct that. Also, the S10 video footage really doesn't look good for me. It is fakely sharpened and will probably quickly fall apart in lower light situations compared to the 6d. At the end of the day, I got my 6d mk2 with the 24-105 L mk2 series lens for just 1300$ and I couldn't be happier about it. Can't wait to invest in more lenses!

  • @MihaiStrömpl

    @MihaiStrömpl

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yeah definitely the DR is decent and I fully agree, the S10 oversharpenes the 4K recording for sure and in low light it falls apart quickly indeed. And $1300 for both the body and lens is an unbelievably good price, congrats!

    I had the same experience. I came from a t3i and the dynamic range was mind blowing to me. The 6dmkii "sucks" in comparison to class-leading incredible cameras but really not by a margin that's big enough to really be crippling if you pick this up. The way canon left 4k or other shooting options/encodings really annoys me but I hope magic lantern gets a version out for this because I'm sure you could great footage out of this camera if they unlocked it.

    The 6dIi is a better camera than it is said to be. The 5div was a better camera but is now discontinued. I am a stills photographer. I have been so since my early teens. I am now 71 years old. I have done a number of kinds of photography, but enjoyed print photojournalism the most. I consider myself a visual story teller. I have no real interest in video. If I had my way, stills cameras would have no video function. I wish that stills cameras were like the original Canon 5d- no video. For those that prefer video, I would like to see good video only cameras. I have nothing against videographers. I do think there are to many would be Cecil B. de Milles out there. But I also think cell phones have lessened the quality of photography. Video was added to still cameras for one reason only. To increase camera sales. Before that happened, camera sales had gotten sluggish. Again, cell phones. What I think is ironic is that a great percentage of cell phone images never go any further than the cell phone. Not prints, not in publications, slide shows. Yes, cell phones are convenient. Cost is not necessarily a factor either. Cell phones have become quite expensive.

    I have a 5D Classic (which is mint), for which I paid just £161, and a 5Dii (which has just under 51,000 shutter actuations), for which I recently paid £300. That's two fantastic full-frame bodies for less than £500. Add to that a Canon nifty-fifty (£63), a Sigma 12-24mm (£225), and a Canon 24mm f2.8 (£99), that's an impressive pro-level kit for under £900. And with what I've saved on a newer body, I can afford to get myself either a really decent lens (such as the Canon 85mm f1.8), or a Canon M50, for video work.

    Thanks for the video, I bought this at launch as a full frame rebel camera with Dual Pixel AF and it is great, i currently have a 24TB storage solution that is about to get full and it's 64TB replacement will cost many times over what the camera itself cost and it's backed up to the cloud. I do some product photography for our restaurant business and mostly just take pictures and video of my kids. I have 4 L lenses and 3 primes and the video looks much better than anything i can get of our my Galaxy Note even at it's highest resolution. Maybe when a 6D mk iii comes i will upgrade to that but I don't know how i will store so much video data hahaha. Maybe a 100TB solution... Also when i play anything i've shot on my 4k television it looks awesome, everyone compliments it and says it's so clear and they quality is so good. Of course if i zoom in to a pixel level it looks pretty bad.

    The thing about storage is... it may sound a lot at first, but you will find a way to fill it up, I know it's so easy to do it. It's many times worse once you make the step to 4K video recording. Although in both scenarios what I wonder myself sometimes is, do I really need all the footage/ Raw files that I captured? Most often than not it's a No, but also deleting it is a hard endeavor for the soul! haha

    I have a 550D which I love but the crop frame is starting to feel a little limiting. So I wanted to get a full-frame but one that wasn't too heavy or expensive. This one seems to fit the bill and I have it on order, arriving today in fact. I don't think the limitations you're listing will bother me, they're worse in the 550D and I'm still quite satisfied with it. In fact I'm super excited about the timelapse capabilities, high ISO performance, dual pixel AF, articulated display... and any sort of stabilization is better than the complete lack of it I've had so far haha. I use a tripod for video anyway, I don't walk around with it. I looked into mirrorless cameras a bit in the past, but I love my prime lenses and don't want to have to change them. So I reckon this camera is probably the best one for me at this point.

    The Canon 6D mark 2 was never a „convincing“ camera. But it was and still is a camera that just works fine and will do the job. Like almost all Canon cameras. That‘s the point of Canon cameras in my opinion. They just work fine without having any headache. If you want a „technical convincing“ camera, buy a Sony and have fun with the monitor, viewfinder, small but edgy body, the button layout and a user surface that does all but fits for no one. Even their first fullframe mirrorless, the Eos R, has a better display and an more durable Body than the Sony A7 in the fourth generation.

I currently have 4 lenses for my Canon t6 and I’m not sure if I should give up on EF mounts and just transition to RF mounts and a mirrorless camera after I spent the money on those lenses.

    Thanks for your comment! And good luck on your pursuit :) And well if you already have EF lenses (and not EF-S) I think a 6D mk II would really make sense, budget-wise as well. It's a great Photography camera now, and it still will be 2 years from now. But honestly there's no easy answer here, and if you go with a newer Canon mirrorless you could still use your lenses through the Canon adaptor for a while until you save up the money for RF. However the main issue that remains with all newer camera models I think, is that a big part of the price difference you're going to be paying will be for improved video capabilities. On the photo side the "advancements" are not that huge. So if video doesn't matter to you, the 6D mk II is a solid option.

    With the prices for 6D2 and EOS R there are few reasons these days to take the 6D2. Essentially it comes down to "faster frame rate". If it moves and moves somewhat unpredictable (like a dog) a 6D2 is still the better choice. Otoh a 80D, 90D or 7D2 might be even better and/or cheaper but good enough. Used prices are not that great for the buyer so getting a good 6D2 with 25.000 on the shutter from a trader is again not that far from a similar EOS R price wise unless you get very lucky. I managed to "vulture" a 6D2 with BG from a "driven out of business" fotographer who had her as a backup but that was pure luck being in the right shop at the right time. If your motives don't move like a Jackrussel - save another month or three get an R

    It will be obsolete unfortunately in a few years. if you are absolutely adamant about staying with a DSLR then I would recommend you buy it and it will be useable for another 5 years at minimum. However if we are looking towards the future, the future is mirrorless and as much as hardcore DSLR people don't like it they will replace DSLR's the same way DSLR's replaced Film cameras. I would honestly recommend you buy a Canon R camera if you only shoot stills due to the 1.6x crop for video in 4k. If you plan on doing both buy a Canon R6 or if you have money Canon R5. Salut! Numai bine!

  • @MihaiStrömpl

    @MihaiStrömpl

    3 жыл бұрын

    Yeah indeed they sell at a very similar price now, and I think the main reason is that, even though on paper the RP looks better and is obviously newer, in real world it's not gonna translate like that. One pretty "big" thing which I can think of is the fact that the RP is much slower when shooting multiple photos, it states 5fps which is not much slower than the 6d mkII's 6.5fps, however those 5fps are without autofocus working, if you do want to focus while shooting (which I'd imagine everyone does) its more like 2-3fps, which is damn slow for 2021, rendering it useless for any action scene. Also the 4K feature which the RP has is pretty much useless too, with a 1.76 crop factor and rather bad rolling shutter.

    There aren't that many significant differences between them to be honest. The Mark II has a slightly higher resolution (26 vs 20MP) , it's faster in burst mode (6.5 vs 4.5), the video should be better (hard to tell by how much) and has a newer processor which should process noise in photos better. But frankly, in real life the differences might be barely noticeable. So either of them would do the job. Depending mostly on if you can find a good deal. Cheers!

    @@MihaiStrömpl ya. Video is not my main care! Just wondering because with same price for a new 6d2 body, I could purchase a combo 6D used with 85mm lens in my country (VietNam). I also concern the longevity of a used camera versus a new camera here (6d2). Is it really worth buying a new one. Anw it seems that I now may choose a 2nd 6D with couple of lens. Thanks a lot about your helpful in for. Have a good day!

    I have a 200D and want to upgrade to a canon with more fps and support the canon L series lenses. I was looking to get the 90D, but just learned that picture quality of canon L series are better on full frame and are a waist of money to use on crop sensor. therefor with my small budget I'm going for the 6D mark ii and 24-105 f4 L series. I don't care about video. Thanks for your video and all the others have been watching to make up my mind.

    That's an interesting question because I believe they're both relatively the same price now. I'd say first you'll have to decide if you wanna use it for Photo, Video or both equally? The 90D is 2 years newer, has way better video, more resolution, an AF joystick on the back(it helps) which makes it the better overall camera. But if you wanna use it mostly for photography, you might want to go with the 6d mkII still, because of that Full Frame sensor, the lens selection you get with that, and stuff like better shallow depth of field, subject isolation, bokeh, etc.

    @@devilsagor2032 For portraits, I gotta say you can't go wrong with either of the two. They even share the same sensor, so the image quality will mostly be identical. The RP is the mirrorless version of the 6D mkII. But there are differences of course, for example I think the 6D mkII still has a better build quality, a more solid feel in hand, and better battery life which will matter if you ever wanna do weddings. And you can probably get it (and lens) for a better price second-hand nowadays. On the other hand, the RP is again the newer camera with some improvements, for example most people will probably have a better time using the Electronic View Finder instead of the optical one, and Dual Pixel AF should work a bit better on this as well. You also have 4K video, but all that doesn't really affect portrait photography much, what does though is the fact that you'll have access to the new and improved RF lenses. They're expensive, but for example the Canon RF 50mm 1.8 is decent in price I'd say. You can use older EF lenses too but through an adaptor, and I really wouldn't want to complicate things to that degree.

    That is a good question, which was on my mind for a long time as well. I've even scoured the rumors and fanbase websites about this. And in the past 3 years nothing substantial came out of any of those rumors. At this point I think it's safe to say Canon is fully dedicated to their new mirrorless lineup. And that the 6D series was replaced by the R6. They also announced there won't be any new EF mount lenses coming out, so I think that's also pretty telling. However I think they are still going to make some DSLRs but in other categories like the 90D. But if they ever decide on releasing a one last Enthusiast-level DSLR (what the 6D series was basically) I think a 6D mk III would be a great one.

    never come in from the right side kzread.info/dash/bejne/aJ9-0cWRYq7Iqag.html , the correct way is from the left side and when you are finishing the shot , go out to the left as you did , that part is good ,the entering is bad . So a good cinematographer would make that scene a lot better , showing that it is not the camera its the user . It has good enough video to make documentaries , even movies . But the budget you would need for a movie is way beyond the price of the camera so that makes it not usable . But for Vlogging even good Documentary

    I got one since a year and I also noticed that the skies are burned out sometimes. An easy way is to just use exposure compensation and step it down by two thirds or use a gradient filter, what many landscape photographers do anyway. What I miss most is that there is no focus peaking or you got to use an external screen. Besides I like this camera a lot, especially in combination with my 16-35mm f2.8 Canon L lens, which is resulting in really sharp pictures with very nice colors.

    Great tips! Yes under-exposing usually works, and the gradient filter will most definitely always work, but it makes the process a bit slower. Also I hear great things about the 16-35, you've got a nice combo :)

    @@MihaiStrömpl: I did some research and I found a German website relating to a function to solve the exposure problem: It is in the recording menue 3 the item number 4 called something like "Tone Value Correction". Standard is "off", if you set it to D+ (I guess D = Dynamic?) you cannot use ISO 100 anymore but it is correcting the "burned out" areas in the sky . . . It seems to work, but I need a "better sky" with more bright areas as it is completely gray outside right now. Otherwise I work with histogramm in the sceen turned on and you can let the camera show you the over exposed areas in the playback function in order to correct exposure if necessary. Still sad that Canon is not correcting this by a formware update, normally I would say this should be possible to do so!

    @@ttr6611 That's quite interesting. I didn't get around to test that. But yes I have to agree, firmware updates aren't something Canon is too famous for :d. Except maybe for their latest and bleeding edge tech products. And I've seen this approach to tackle Dynamic Range in other cameras too, for example Fuji, has several degrees to which you can improve the DR, and with each step it increases the minimum ISO as well indeed.
