Canon RF85mm f/1.2 L Review - 2 Years and 75+ Examples

Ойын-сауық

This is my non-technical review of the RF85mm f/1.2 USM. Rather than show you pictures of sharpness charts and pixel peeping on corners, this is a review of my professional work using the RF85mm f/1.2L USM over almost two years. I have provided over 75 image examples that show you the performance of this lens for general portraiture, weddings, fashion, beauty, editorials and many more genres. I even throw in a small segment about video performance.
My review comparing the RF85mm f/1.2 L USM to the RF28-70 f/2 L USM.

CLARIFICATION: I said that the $259 Canon Care Pack was the most expensive you can get. This isn't true, the Care Pack for their more expensive telephoto lenses run quite a bit more. But the main point there was a filter and a Care Pack are almost the same price and the filter doesn't cover you as insurance against anything - where the Care Pack does.

Thanks. It all depends on the body you have and the type of photography you do. For the R5, with the button layout, it makes sense to me because my exposure triangle is in the familiar places it has been in for years on the 5Ds. Thus leaving me with the control ring to assign to whatever I want. When I have fast-changing environments I find myself needing to change up my AF type. I think R and RP owners may need that ring for one of their exposure triangle settings. Thanks for watching!

Well Kevin, you convinced me, my 85mm f/1.2 DS is arriving in the next hour! I went DS coz for the money I wanted a truly unique look and being here in Texas too, that built in ND works for me! Also pretty much any low light, I use flash/strobe and just figure anything effectively faster than a f/2.8 is just fine in any low light situation I'll find myself in. For some graduations, after the ceremony, we take family/graduate photos and its almost completely pitch black. Shoot that with 24-105 f/4 + flash, or this last time I used 28-70 but still stopped down a bit to make sure everyone was in focus...high speed environment packed with people so not much time and room to make sure everyone is on the same plane.

If you like the 85mm perspective and you want an insanely sharp lens for landscapes, this lens will do that job. It's stupidly large and not a lens I would want to take for landscapes. If I'm taking a lens that heavy, I'd rather it be a zoom, like the 70-200, which also goes to 85.

I used to shoot with the Tamron Di VC SP 85mm f1.8. While it had that corner to corner sharpness and the image stabilisation was useful, I still sold it and bought the RF 85mm F1.2 to go with my R6. The low light performance of the R6 + 85mm f1.2 is mind boggling. I wasn't expected that. It is helpful when you still want to take photos in the autumn/winter and it's already dark outside at 16:00

I must be lucky as I have had the canon 5D mk II , 5D mk III , 5d mk IV , and R5 with a lot of different lens and have never put a filter on any of the lens ever and have never damaged the front element of any lens. I have destroyed a couple of camera \ lens by dropping them onto concrete but as far as just scratching or damaging the front element it has not been a concern. Even if it were to get scratched I don't think it shows up in the photo's. I have heard of people buying scratched lens off Ebay cheap and say they can't see the scratch in the photo's.
