Canon RF 800mm f/11 • Small Birds at VW Wetlands 4K

Using the Canon EOS R6 and RF 800mm f/11 telephoto lens I make photos of small birds at VW Wetlands. This lens is really pretty amazing for wildlife photography.

    Thank you! I think the bokeh is what was the most pleasant surprise about this lens. I thought it would be terrible at f/11 but it's not bad at all and sometimes it's spectacular!

    After watching a few of your videos today I just subscribed. I've got a lumix g9 MFT and a 100-400mm Leica lens that I have been using for birds. I'm thinking of getting either an R5 or an R6 with that lens you have. Keep up the great videos, I love them!

    Great shots Phil. You do get so many varied species when you go out. Love the colors. Lens and camera work well together especially for a F11 aperture. Thanks for sharing 👍🙏

    Thank you, Adrian. I’ll go ahead and apologize. There are lots of bird videos coming. I really want to get out to a waterfall but it won’t rain. So, get ready for lots more birds LOL oh, and some really intoxicated live music photography, embarrassingly so.

    Thank you! The first time I saw one it was on a fence post, I stopped the car and almost dropped my d800 out the window trying to get the shot, it flew off before I hit the shutter. LOL

    I think if you are shooting up to the sky like that Kestrel shot, you could even put a 1.4x TC on the RF 800mm f/11. I wonder how tough it is to put a bird in that small focusing area when you are doing BIF? Have you tried?

  • @PhilThach

    @PhilThach

    I'm considering purchasing a 1.4x Extender in 2022. I've done birds in flight with the 800mm, the smaller focus area is not a problem with birds in flight.

    Yes it’s on Ferdinand Piech Way which connects to Highway 58 a few miles south of Harrison Bay State Park, there are no signs or anything to denote the area.

    No mic...🤣🤷🏻‍♂️ seems that the “budget” super zooms that Canon made are really nice lenses. The output is incredible! Thanks for taking us along! I really liked the little yellow bird ALOT.

    Yeah, I finally figured out it was the cable that was messing up my sound for a few videos and then, once that was solved, I forgot the mics altogether! The 800 is a neat lens, has a Fresnel element in it. It's a prime though, no zoom at all. I don't think it's as sharp as my new 100-500 or my old 200-500 but it's hard to argue with 800mm.

    Have you tried using extension tubes on the lens to reduce the minimum focus distance? I'm curious how well that would work before I consider purchasing this lens.

  • @PhilThach

    @PhilThach

    I haven’t yet but I plan to at some point. The minimum focus distance doesn’t cause me problems often but when it does it’s pretty annoying.

    I've found that I get better results with auto settings using this lens. It's too slow for moving subjects.

    Hi, Have you tried the lens on a tripod by chance?

  • @PhilThach

    @PhilThach

    It's so light and the IS is so good combined with the IBIS in the R6 I haven't done ant stills with it on a tripod. I have put it on a tripod a couple of time to make video clips of far off birds. It works great.

    Phil, how do you think the 20 MP R6 does with cropping?

  • @PhilThach

    @PhilThach

    It's not so bad, I wish it was 24 megapixels but I really prefer to stay away from ultra high resolution cameras so the R5 isn't for me.

    @@PhilThach as a fairly new photographer, around 6 months now, can you please explain why you wouldn't want the higher resolution of the R5? Wouldn't it be better for cropping in tighter on a photo and look less grainy? Sorry for the newb question, but I'm on the fence between the R5 and the R6.

  • @PhilThach

    @PhilThach

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@highwayman1224 It absolutly would be better for cropping. However I realy don't want to deal with those huge files. My hope is they make an APSC camera like the rumored R7 with about 20-24 megapixels. The R5 in crop mode is only 17 megapixels if I remember correctly so an R7 like I described would have a higher pixel density. Unfortunately, that rumored R7 seems to have been put on the back burner so now I am starting to have some regrets about opting for the R6. I'd much rather have an R6 for portraits and an R7 for wildlife but if they never make the R7 I suppose I would need an R5. Thanks for watching, Martin.

    @@PhilThach thanks for the quick response. You have some really pretty birds where you are. I'm in Arizona and we have some pretty interesting one's here but not quite as many really colorful ones as you do. Thanks for the great videos, you got a new subscriber today! 👍
