I would call the EF 35mm f/2 IS USM a forever lens! It'll be great whether I'm shooting on film, DSLR or if I ever get a mirrorless. No regrets!
Nice! The macro / close focusing ability is the real stand-off here, plus native mount. As usual, well done!
An excellent review sir! Very detailed and informative, and - most importantly - really objective. Most KZread reviews are 90-100% opinion and 0-10% data, whereas you have gone to great lengths to give us the details and leave the conclusions to ourselves. I am delighted I found your channel and will look forward to watching your other videos!
Great comparison! Thanks!
Great video, thanks
I'm loving my EOS R and this RF 35mm f/1.8 lens!

IMO, very much different!
Great review. This lens is a must have for Canon R mount cameras. Amazing sharp image, color, silent focus, customization ring, light, F1.8, and most importantly great value. This can compete at the with much more expensive lens image wise at half or less the price.

Apparently it isn't, the EF is the must have lens.
great review, thank you
Very good technical review without unnecessary flairs of acting like in many programs of photography boys, I will stay for longer...greeetings from Poland
really informative video thank you! although would have been handy to see EF 35mm with adapter on the EOS R body
Great Review ... Thanks
You gave a lot of great reviews for performance/price aware photographers and this one is great too. I am wondering how much improvement EOS-R+RF 35mm would have compared to 6D+EF 35F2IS.
Thanks, Regards Si.
Bought RF version two times for its native mount and compactness, but never got warmed up with its output - just not inspired. Got EF version instead.
Thanks You are number one
I'm still torn, I really appreciate your comparison review. I've got the RP and an EF-RF adaptor so either one would work, I just want more bang for my buck. Macro and ring controller would be nice extras.
great review, thank you, I`m gonna go for the EF with the adaptor for the EOS-R

Just be aware it is a very noisy lens.
I'm picking up the EF version as I only have mirrorless EF-M mount and can use it with speed booster. Too bad we cannot adapt RF lenses.
I didn't know Canon budget 35IS EF this good, always undershadowed by 35L. Interesting choice because canon adapter is of same diameter. It doesn't look weird to use EF glass.
the digital picture actually shows the RF version to be slightly sharper wide open than the EF version. at all smaller apertures, the performance shows to be identical everywhere
good review
Vignetting with the IS USM is very strong and not easily corrected in video.
The RF35 can be a very good and relatively modern lens for the RF, but the feature of extending the member when focusing and thus the lack of sealing against weather influences make it quite prone to damage, which discourages me quite a bit, and that's why I'm rather in favor of the EF 35mm 2.0 what is your opinion about it ?
Would you say the RF 35mm is silent while focusing on video? I put my Rode Video Mic pro on top of the camera while I vlog.
Seems like the EF one is overall better, aside from needing the adapter and being slightly bulkier. Guess I'm keeping my EF then because it also means I can still use it on EOS film cameras and adapt it to my Canon M6. Hopefully we see a MkII of the RF version at some point because it would be nice to get a native lens, or maybe I'll be able to afford an L version if it comes out 🤞
If you review lens..can you tell what type of photography used for?
You forgot to mention the EF lens is incredibly noisy, I do a lot of video and if you want to record sound it is so loud it is useless. How loud is the RF lens? Cheers for the review.
Which IS is better?
The RF 35mm is completely silent during video focus, it's my favorite lens over the Sigma Art 35mm which makes a ton of motor noise during video recording.

Which one is sharper for you?

The EF is very noisy, so noisy it is useless for AF when vlogging or capturing sound and video
When you was checking resolution did you look into it 200 %. The ef was really on par thats a 7 year old lense. Im amazed.

EF 35 F2 IS USM does have a better build quality then that RF 35/1.8, and also does have a DoF scale, which the RF 35/1.8 is lacking. But if you're on RF mount, better use the RF, because one doesn't need an adapter, which is bulky. FYI, the EF 35/2 IS USM was already being released into 2012. And i never do pixel peeping, only looking at the composition as a whole. 🙂
How useful are the control rings on these new RF lenses? It looks like a cool feature, but without having one, I cannot decide if it's useful or just a gimmick

Me neither. It would be great for ISO, except that you can't adjust it to Auto-ISO, so I am trying to figure out what else to set it for, and got just the normal EF adapter.

padam19 i sometimes find it useful but I would not say it’s a killer feature. It feels nice but there are ways to customize the camera enough so that you won’t really need them
Hello and thank you for your video. Sorry I'm French and don't really understand the technical terms ... A question that I still ask myself: I have the Canon 35 f2 is usm (which I could mount on the Canon RP Via an adapter ring), it is not much heavier than the RF 35 f1. 8 is stm, and I should get pretty much the same image renderings right ? Apart from the fact that the 35 RF is almost macro, is it worth it for me to sell my 35 f2 is usm to buy the RF 35 f1.8 is stm or not ??? Thank you in advance for your answers, Sincerely, Philgood ...

Very good question, I don't like anything on the EF version, and in that case, in my opinion, it is much better than the RF in terms of weather conditions. The quality of the RF is so different from the fast and sharp EF 2.0.
So the EF f/2 is a bit sharper and faster af than the RF 1.8?
After this video, I will keep my EF 35mm. It is the legendary even BHphoto on sale RF 35mm :D
Are you weighing the EF with no caps, but weighing the RF with two caps?

great comparison. canon seems to be going backwards in their lens designs
Might as well just buy the Tamron f1.8 , weather sealed , f1.8 , fast focus and sharp .1.4 macro and cheaper by around $200 if gray import

The Tamron SP 35/1.8 VC...it does show lateral CAs, i've had it for Nikon F mount, but quickly sold it, because of that.

Focus speed: STM VS USM...
Canon has given up on all internal focus lenses. I love the EF 70-200mm f/2.8 L series because it is internal focus. Nearly all of Canon's EF L series lenses are internal focus. Now because of cry babies claiming the lenses are too big, Canon has designed most if not all of their RF lenses to have external focus. When zoomed or focused the lens will stick out like an erection.
