Canon RF 100-400 - Impressive Value & Better than the 100-500?!!
The very affordable Canon RF 100 - 400 is an excellent lens and despite being a full-frame lens is the best zoom you can currently buy for Canon crop sensor mirrorless cameras like the R10 and R7

As a retired person 70+ I sold my pro gear due to weight, becomes hard to handle for extended periods. I now shoot with this lens and have sold many large consumer wildlife prints snapped with it. The light weight is really nice and there has never been a complaint on image quality from anyone purchasing my prints. With over 50 years of photography (wildlife & studio) I find this a great lens. If I were a pro traveling the world seeking wildlife then the abuse the white lens can take would make it my choice but for what I do the RF 100-400 gives me images that suit myself and my clients just fine.

I love that little dust effect you did after talking about how its not weather sealed. Nice little touches like that are fun.
Solid review. Well done 👍
Thank you so much - I agree with every point you make. I bought it today from my dealer in Bern, and I am looking forward how it behaves on my R6 Mk II.
Very good presentation. Many thanks!
Bought it a week ago, loving it. It is great lens with some shortcomings Great review
Love your video, thank you very much! :) Did you use any post-production for that bird photo with RF 100-400? Or it was that sharp already?
Excellent video 👍
Thanks for helping with my decision making. This 100-400 is definitely wiser choice together with an extender option to carry around.
thankks, im so close to get this lens
You've sold me on this lens for wildlife and sports.
I have a Canon R6 Mk 1. After I watched this video and ordered this lens as I’m just an amateur. I plan to take it to the Alaska cruise. In your video, you mentioned RF 1.4x extender. The reason you didn’t use 2.0x extender is it possible it will reduced 2 f-stops? As for EF vs RF, is it better save my money to get the RF version? RF versions costs approximately 500+ more than EF If in the long run, it’s better then I will saved up the money. I always enjoyed your videos. I appreciate your op. Thanks.
"... about the same size as an Arizona ice tea..." I hadn't thought of it that way, but it really is! lol
Thanks for the video !! dont it make some issues in low light because f/5.6-8 ?
This lens have impressively strong image stabilization, I took sharp shot of a cat at 1/15sec on 640mmEQ with my R10. Combo produce great sharp pictures.
this is the exact set up I use as a daily driver on my R6 100-400 Plus 1.4 tele working great since last July..

This is a great video. Thanks. Are there any extra considerations for settings when adding the Tele converter to the 100 to 400 lens. I seem to be struggling with auto focus and sharpness with my images.

The 1.4 would be my recommendation and remember it can seem like you are not getting sharp shots if atmospheric distortion is happening and even on cool days over a short distance you can get heat waves that the lenses see.
Bought this lens even though I already own the 100-500, mainly for its portability since I’m going on an overseas trip that includes bird.
Great review…I was very impressed with that lens and paired with the R10, it’s a good value in a lightweight compact package. Oh, and great little puffy dust cloud appearance, when you mentioned weather sealing 😂 #PigPen #Peanuts

PS - using that 1.4x with my RF 100-500 was such a let down…especially when I wanted to quickly put my camera back in my bag. Terrible design Canon. Works great on the 100-400.
Hi, can you tell me which lens collar you show in the vid?
A couple of my photography friends have this lens and rave about the image quality it produces for the money
Wish I had thought of that. I already own the RF 100-500 and 1.4x and 2x extenders. Still sharp with the 2x.

@@ElBoyoElectronico -I’ve owned both but I haven’t used the 1.4x in a long time. I used to think the IQ of the 1.4x would be much better but that doesn’t seem to be he case. They are both good. I do have to be more careful with the 2X, using faster shutter speeds or laying the camera on a sandbag.
@ElBoyoElectronico

@@altonmarsh very good to know. I just recently tried out DxO PureRaw for denoising and was impressed. I can now use pictures with about ISO12800 and get them to look great afterwards. This should also make the loss of light with the 2x extender even more tolerable.
I have an R5 with 100-500 and recently also bought an R10 with the 100-400. Am still getting used to the R10 but so far it’s doing well. I notice that the R10 doesn’t respond very quickly when it turns off, so I have to pump the shutter to keep it alive! I could change the settings also. I do like the portability but the R5 combo does beat it for image quality. However the R10 combo is very good and with DXO Photolab gets good results

Sir , I use canon r50 and I bought this lens yesterday. When I click my image is getting blurred and I dont know what setting I pressed in camera . when I click screen show busy and after 30sec image get capture.. Guide me plz
Hi there, I was thinking about purchasing this lens but two things stopped me. 1) I would use it mainly in woods with poor light and I was afraid of denoising every single image taken. 2) I am also afraid of diffraction when using it on my R7, since I have seen it is quite prone to it. Don’t know if my reasoning makes sense.
@gfxmaniac
Жыл бұрын
diffraction is not a problem, I have R7, ok it is better on R6. noise can be a problem in bad light, but i have more problem with focus+bad light but hey it's 600$
@dcornwell7130

As with other reply. Don't forget noise will be less on full frame than on R7. Plus is f7.1 to f8 going to make £1800 difference in the woods?!
I was just considering purchasing the 100-500 except for the price even though it's $200 off right now, it sounds like this 100-400 with the extender is the way to go.

The 100-500 is an excellent lens and is faster with more reach but if you want to use it with extenders it is very annoying that it no longer compacts nicely when an extender is attached.

The copy-to-copy variation in the cheap lenses have burned me time and time again. Why should one have to deal with poor lenses and trying to work around their limitations? No one ever talks about this. I would not keep a TC locked to the 100-500 as I don’t wish to be shooting at f10 all the time and it is not that hard to remove it and it stores away nicely. It’s not even a problem, after over two years of owning it.

@@RogerZoul I have been reviewing lenses on KZread for over a decade and in those early days the variation from lens to lens was a real issue but mostly from 3rd party manufacturers. Today things seem to be much better and although this lens is very affordable I would not be concerned with getting a bad copy. For some photographers the value of the 100-400 is excellent and they are very happy to work within the limitations. Some photographers are wiling and able to pay much more for the 100-500. I am glad we have choices.

@@photorectoby Not sure how to connect reviewing lens and copy variation of lenses, but I have been buying and using cameras and lenses for a decade and my EF 100-400 mk 2 was never sharp across many Canon bodies and now my RF 800 F11 is similar. Not only that, but that lens pulls to the right as you fire a burst of shots. I have 3 buddies with the same lens and none of theirs does that, and theirs are sharper than mine.

Would the lens naturally click into a Canon R50 or would it require an adapter to be able to fit?

No adpater needed for the R50 - this would be a great lens to use on that camera.
Wouldn't this be a way of encouraging those who can't afford to go for the 100-500... because the quality comparison is made on close subjects... distant subjects would have given different results...
Does it work with a 2.0? not only the 1.4?
@cloudpandarism2627

it does work but you end up with f18 which is not good in my opinion. even if sun is out and your area is super bright i wouldnt use it at 800mm. picture quality will suffer when you push that lens so far. 1.4x is the sweetspot. little compromise but overall good performance. i will buy an 1.4 soon to add it on the 100-400m

Sorry my math was off a little.
On digital-picture test charts sharpness on 400mm doesn't look great. And on f/11 it's not become better. Many old lenses with TC, like ef 200 2.8, or 300 4 is and many variations of 70-200 can be sharper on 400mm. I would say, if i need compact "landscape" telephoto zoom, i would prefer EF 70-300 IS usm II or one of 70-200 4. This lens is great idea, but like many non-l recent canon lenses - not great realization.

No? From the standpoint of teleconverter it is :) But otherwise the 100-500 is an excellent lens. The question of which is a better value is a more difficult question to answer.
The lens doesn't get longer when you attach it to a crop sensor camera; and it wasn't 400mm to begin with. Grab a ruler if you don't believe me.

The 100-500 L and 100-400mm L II are different league than this consumer 100-400mm or 55-250mm in croped cameras.
