I made an interesting discovery about bag hides/blinds the other month. You can never get birds as relaxed as you can with a conventional hide, because your body is supporting it, so it moves when you do. But I found out that if you put a pole or stick in the hide, higher than your head, it makes a massive difference. Because the bag hide, no longer moves up and down, when you put your eye to the viewfinder, or look up from it.

Now I am in a quandary, I have limited budget, and I was thinking of upgrading my R7 to a second hand R5 when the R5.2 came out, now.. If an R7.2 comes out and fixes the issues that we have I am sorely tempted to stay with the R7 family. I love the reach of the APC with my RF100-500.

I have also heard the rumours regarding a potential EOS R7 Mark II and as a current R7 owner, I would like to see the camera specifications improved to make this a better option for wildlife photographers. The improvements I would like to see is --------- stacked sensor to bring this into line with competition such as the Fuji X-HS2 (a very good camera) / improved EVF to 3.69M dot (in line with R6 Mark II) / 1 x CF Express B Card slot + 1 x UHS II SD Card slot / a battery grip as an additional accessory option (don't understand why Canon didn't offer this for the R7 ?). Obviously such improvement would cause a cost increase, but if Canon made these changes to the EOS R7 Mark II, what a camera this would be, and I believe would make Canon a force to be reckoned with in the APS-C marketplace. If these sorts of changes were made, I will be first on the list of buyers 👍

Yes, definitely ready to pay more for a better R7 mark 2. Rolling shutter, autofocus and buffer are main issues to address. And maybe also make the design similar to R6 and R5 bodies for easier manipulation in full manual mode.

I like the design and ergonomics of the R7, especially the rear joystick and Quick Control Dial, which I assign to exposure compensation. For this reason, I'm not sure I see the need to "standardize" the layout to match the R5-6. Most of us just don't use multiple cameras (though I admit to sometimes being envious of those who do :)

We don't have exotic birds where I live, but I've long wanted a really good photo of a Bald Eagle. Last weekend I (almost) got my wish. My wife and I passed a couple dead trees on our way home . . . and there were two Bald Eagles perfectly placed! Timing was almost perfect -- they both flew off after just a few moments. Stunningly beautiful, handsome birds; they convey such dignity. These shots, however, are a perfect illustration of the dynamic range problem you talk about in your video: I didn't under-expose enough, and portions of their white feathers are blown out. Argh! Thanks for yet another very useful video!

As someone with the current r7, I feel like so many professional reviewers seem like they want an APS-C R5 because they are more than just a intermediate/hobby photographer, and that is where the R7 SHINES. For the price tag without pushing an extra $1000-2000AUD for the R6mk2 or R5 the R7 feels really good to me. As a hobby photographer it more than does the job, I feel like very few people in the price range actually want 30fps(personally I have to slow it to 15fps if I use electronic), if they dropped it to 15-20fps and stacked the sensor or got at least one as fast as the R5 to almost eliminate rolling shutter it would be a massive improvement and would mean I wouldn't shoot mechanical 99% of the time. Other than that fixing the autofocus(which lets be honest could probably be improved quite a lot with a software patch specific for the R7 instead of basically piggybacking the R3/R5 setup, but unless you have a nikon software patches seem basically non existent)

Hi Jan, Thanks for another great video. First of all I have to say that despite its issues, I love the R7. I accept the limitations it has and do the best I can. It is much more capable than my previous DSLR, produces some great photos and the price point meant I could afford it at the time. Things change however, and I would definitely appreciate the improvements you mentioned and an additional wheel control. An increase in price would be expected, but hopefully not too much 😊. Thank you Jan :) A much improved R7 Mk II would be my dream camera ! A much faster readout speed and improved auto focus (which might be one and the same thing) would be awesome. But so would a compatible battery grip. I agree it wouldn't have to be a stacked sensor. Just a LOT faster readout speed. A much bigger buffer would be nice too. Oh, and rather than trying to improve that horrendous slapping mechanical shutter, I'd be okay if they just removed it completely. Aren't mechanical shutters something they used back in the old days ? ;) It's funny, for all of its weaknesses, and their are plenty, the R7 is still the best camera body "at any price" I can buy for my purposes. Reach is just that important to me. Which is why for the time being, I just do what I have to, to work around all the weaknesses of the current R7.

Thanks for another great video. I moved from the R6 to the R6 II and not been disappointed. I had hoped the R7 body would have be more like the R6/5. Then the disappointment of the sensor (reworked 90D). I don’t know if moving to a stacked sensor is needed, just one designed for mirrorless. The R6 was a reworked 1D sensor. Great, but the new CMOS for the R6 II is a bigger improvement than just the 4 extra mp. So maybe just a new sensor design, better shutter and a more “prosumer” body would be nice.

You and I have both said many times that we would love to see a professional level APS-C camera, designed from the ground up. (At least higher-end with some pro features.) This rumored R7 II could be that. For me, at least, the design would have to start with a stacked BSI sensor. They could recycle a lot of other things, but the sensor is a deal-breaker.

My wishes for a R7 mkii would be a 24-26 mp stacked sensor, with the autofocus from the R6 mkii, pro level weather sealing and possibility to use battery grip. Of course that would have to be a bit more expensive that current r7, but i am sure that it would be a camera that many people would buy. Wish you a great week/weekend. Cheers, Bjoern

Great video as always, Jan! The original Canon EOS R7, though still a very capable camera and maybe the best APS-C mirrorless camera out there, was advertised with specs that it actually wasn't really capable of. The electronic shutter is basically unusable, because the rolling shutter and the wobbling are so frustrating. The readout speed isn't very good either. So that leaves you with mechanical shutter of eletronic first curtain. But then you have a noisy shutter and frustrating shuttershock. Besides that, the camera feels rather fragile, small and made of plastic. Also, the button lay-out is far from perfect. We miss a third wheel and I often unintentionally switch buttons on or off, screwing up my settings etc. Besides all that, my particular R7 seems to have a specific problem where it sometimes gets stuck in a 'lag' when using the eye-tracking and the shutter button, where the camera will just fire away unintentionally for 10 photo's or so more then anticipated. So yeah, even though a new Canon EOS R7 mark II would be more expensive, I would probably buy one immediately.

They botched the R7 by naming it a "7" and creating an entry level sports camera instead of a pro-level crop sensor version of the 5d IV, which the 7D II was. The 7d II was roughly $1700. Put a crop sensor in an r5 body and charge about $2600 for it and I would be making my first photo gear pre-order. If they just used many of the same engineering components as used in the R5 it would have minimum rolling shutter and much better buffer just because of the lower pixel count. Much of the tooling already exists so it would be easy to make.

  • @marcmurison

    @marcmurison

My R7 also has the stuck-firing problem you mention. Definitely when using 1st-curtain, but I've also seen it very occasionally even when in ES mode. It seems to be triggered by simultaneously 1) holding down both the shutter button and the button I have programmed for back button focusing, and 2) firing off a longish burst (greater than ~10 frames or thereabouts). At some point in the burst, it just "sticks" and fires away no matter what, and you have to turn the camera off to make it stop. Quite a surprise the first time it happened! I thought it might be the shutter button malfunctioning, but that doesn't seem to be it -- it's pretty repeatable by doing those two things above, and it never happens otherwise (even long, buffer-filling bursts but not having the focus button simultaneously pressed).

After some experimenting on my R7 and the EF 400/5.6L + 1.4x II extender, the AF definitely needs some contrast in the scene I want to shoot. As I tried to shoot some cloud details, the camera refused to focus, even as I switched to static focus, no subject tracking etc - finally, I had to resort to manual focus on my lens. I haven't tried with my 80D, but I don't think that it would balk in shooting this subject. Shooting birds in the neighborhood is quite hard, because these are flitting between buildings and are really hard to follow (I feel that following birds in flight with anything longer than the 400mm/5.6 is quite hard at such short distances and angular speeds - I had to resort to open both eyes while trying to track these darn birds). We will probably have our first air shows etc starting in April.

I plan to not get the latest and greatest R5 ii, as the R5 already does more than I "need" for great images. As far as need, I was once in my favorite hobby shop when a customer walked in and told the owner that he needed several things. Hi Jan, I can clearly understand your photo vs video dilemma, but without a second body and certainly without the "pressure" from a youtube channel, I just give priority to photo. Once after switching to video I filmed the moment a beeeater joined the one I had been filming. I did try to extract some stills, but because I was not filming Log or raw, the IQ wasn't too great. Do you know some video mode which allows extracting good IQ stills ?? With your terns, I guess the challenge was to focus both bodies on the same scene .. I would assume your new duo-plate for the Flexshooter might allow to almost automatically film the same scene you're shooting the stills from, right ? With the R5ii & R1 apparently delayed, I'd be really surprised when also an R7ii would be available still this year. Giving the R7ii a stacked sensor would asap resolve rolling shutter and AF performance. I would hope Canon 'delays' the R7ii until they can give it wings via a stacked sensor ;-) And preferably also one CFxB card, a third wheel (ISO) and a more discreet EFCS/mechanical shutter, unless the stacked sensor makes these modes obsolete. When such stacked R7ii would come, I might want that one instead of the R5ii (while in such case keeping my R5 for the non-birding stuff) That 500/5.6 does look nice .. but I feel it's overpriced compared to the 200-800 which is indeed heavier (by an extender and battery grip). They have the same bokeh-power and clearly the 200-800 is more versatile. After your earlier video showing how the 200-800 misses coating to stay clear, I ordered a B+W clear filter to have the missing protective coatings without the transmission loss of an UV filter (which you once teached me to dislike, heheh)

If it had better specs (i.e. faster readout, better / current generation autofocus, less rolling shutter) I would pay more. I can see $500 or $600 uncharge but would really like to see these improvements come in at around $1800 US and I would be first in line. I really like my R7 so an MkII would have to be meaningful upgrades.

Jan, regarding readout speeds, you have to remember that the R7 had the equivalent to an 82mp ff sensor, that is a lot of data!

  • @marcmurison

Does readout speed go as pixel density, rather than total pixels? In terms of pixel density, you'd have to have an 80Mpix sensor on FF to match the R7's pixel density. However, the total pixels on the R7 is still just 32.5Mpix, which these days(!) is no longer the stuff of headlines.

Hi Jan, I really love your channel and the lens comparisions you do. I would like to determine what is the best light weight 600mm option available today. This could be a great video for you to make. I was a canon shooter with 7Dii+100-400is ii but bought into Sony with A1+200-600, I also have R7 now. The new Sigma 500 F5.6 looks to be almost perfect (except its only 500mm and 15fps) from all the reviews I have seen, sharper than the 200-600 and much better chromatic aberation. The Nikon Z8+600PF looks brilliant and can also take a teleconverter which is very tempting. Sony have the new 300 F2.8 which takes 2x TC very well Canon doesn't really have an option other than 100-500 (+TC) Olympus would be OM1+150-400 So which combo is the killer 600mm lightweight solution for birding? David

I don't agree with a possible R7 mark II being more expensive, as this would limit the camera to an audience that would have the financial means to buy the more expensive models. I was very happy when Canon released the R7 because it included many important features for wildlife photographers at an affordable price. I bought my R7 in 12x on my credit card and I will pay the last bill next month. I think Canon already offers excellent features in its full frame line, but I would be very disappointed if an R7 mark II cost a lot more. In countries like Brazil, where I live, photographic gear is extremely expensive and we have to make a big sacrifice to have equipment more focused on wildlife photography. This opinion applies to the Canon RF 200-800mm as well. I'm happy that Canon offers products that a wider audience can purchase and photograph with quality. Even with all the problems, the R7 is the best camera I've had the opportunity to have in my life and I know that I don't have the opportunity to have a full frame from the R line at the moment, so Canon providing us with this opportunity for a fair price is something that makes me happy.

The original R7 was definitely a missed opportunity for a cropped sensor wildlife/birding camera. in a R7 MkII my wish list would be for a sensor with faster readout to solve the rolling shutter/AF issues. A sensor that would tolerate low light conditions would be also welcome. Improved firmware on the AF would also be good to see especially that this is available already to a large degree and should not take much investment upfront to roll out for R7 MkII. If Canon puts some $$ into those areas of deficiency I'll be happy. No need for higher resolution.

I was very excited to hear about the possibility of the new R7 mark ii. The R7 was on my wish list for a specific purpose (more on that in a bit), but now that there is the possibility of a version of the R7 with better general performance (that the R7 mark 1), with hopefully more reliable auto focus and better shutter options I will be very interested to buy (hopefully within a year of now) and pair it with the Canon RF 100mm to 400mm lens (taking advantage of the extra reach of the APS-C sensor). I would be very prepared to pay more money for for an R7 Mark 2 that has improved performance (I'm really hoping for a significate jump in performance). Why do I want a Canon Mirrorless body with a APS-C sensor? - I already have the Canon R6 with 100mm to 500mm lens with battery grip. This would still be my main camera rig as I'm regularly filming Australian wildlife (and birds) in low light. What I am after is a small set up that I can carry on me all the time in a bum/waist bag as I'm working in our created ecosystem that is and surrounds our camping ground. There are so many times that magical Wildlife Moments happen in front of me when I do have (and cannot have) a bigger camera and lens on me. To be able to whip out the Canon R7ii with RF 100mm to 400mm lens for those close encounters that I'm currently missing filming would be amazing and greatly help my wildlife story telling.

I'd be willing to pay as much as $3,000 for such a camera, probably teaming it with the 100-500mm lens to keep things light in the field. I think it's pretty obvious that Canon is way behind the competition in sensor design and manufacturing. Their best sensor score on DxOMark is the 24 mpx R3 sensor. At this point they can't produce a large sensor that can match the frame rates of the competition. R7 sensor is slow with a small buffer which leaves the user open to missing great opportunities waiting for the buffer to clear. That ruined the camera for anything but perched birds. To make it a very good birding camera I'm sure the price would have to go up significantly.

For the R7 Mark II, I’ll gladly take less megapixels for less rolling shutter, faster readout, larger buffer, and better ergonomics. The R7, while a great camera in its own right, is just inferior to the R6 Mark II, R5, and R8, IMO. I have both the R6 Mark II and an R7, and I almost always reach for the former; by comparison the performance of the R7 is just a bit more disappointing. Sure, you have higher megapixels and the 1.6x crop, but what good are these features if the autofocus performance and rolling shutter negatively impact your successful in-focus hit rate and you can’t use those 32 megapixels anyway. But at the end of the day, I think it is unrealistic to think the R7 Mark II will release this year.

I pre ordered then cancelled the R7 for the lack of stacked sensor started thinking about OM1 then the XH2s but I know the Canon like Sony has the better focusing. So not long ago I got the R7 ( have many great EF lenses) and generally I'm happy with it for the moment. I'm looking at the Z8 Nikon have much better selection of modern wildlife lenses so no sense in me buying anything RF and stuck in a closed system. Nikon now have great focus and hopefully will also have a stacked apsc camera. When I look back I would have prefered the D500 vs the 7DMKII. It's only Fuji at the moment that regard apsc as Pro. They want to push us to FF. If so Z8 might be my next move.
