Don't judge the R8 & 28mm AF on the main a-roll shot here. It's jumping around because someone was in a rush and forgot to change the subject detect from "off" to "auto" or "people". Rest assured, if I find out who did this, I will punish them both swiftly and severely. Usually this combo is lock-on 👌

My Trinity for nature and landscape are: RF 14-35/4 L, RF 24-105/4 L, and RF 100-400mm - sometimes complemented with the RF 35/1.8 Macro, or the 85/1.8 Macro, if I want to get close for shooting plants, mushrooms and flowers for example.

@@DanYosua For landscape I also could imagine only two lenses: The RF 14-35/4 L in combination with the RF 70-200/4 L. Yes, you will have to accept the gap between 35 and 70mm, but this is not dramatic as you want to shoot wide or long in most situations. But I do not own the 70-200 yet, because only recently I bought the even more versatile, but slower 100-400.

  • @DanYosua

Agreed, on many days I wouldn't mind that gap either. Usually when I want the fast option in those scenarios, it's for candid portraits of those with me. Or to play around with out of focus foreground elements. And the 50mm is small enough to find a way in the bag if nothing else for that.

Exact same setup for me. I really try to avoid the weight in the kit because out in the field I'd rather enjoy being out than lug around nearly 4kg of f2.8+ lenses and rarely shoot them at f/2.8. Canon really needs to developer a L-series 24-200 or a 28-200 like Nikon has. I've seen a ton of photos from the Nikon 24-200 that win awards and get printed and sold.

Really appreciate the comment, this is helpful! Haha I was just recording a podcast episode last night and said the same thing about the title. I'm used to targeting search, not browse or suggested traffic. And as is, this title was sort of a hedge in case the thumbnail didn't work instead of going all in on the concept. I'm a bit hesitant to change it when something is working, but have my eye on it for this week!

I have struggled to come up with 'the right' set of lenses for my R8. But I settled on a similar group to you, but different. I have the RF 15-30, RF 24-105/f4, RF 100-400, and RF600. This covers a lot of situations, but I am a sucker for bokeh. So, I recently added 2 primes; an EF 50 1.4 and 85 1.8; mostly for portraits. These lenses look beautiful to me but sometimes don't focus at all. I have to switch to manual focus if I want to keep shooting. Only does it when under pressure (of course). I'll have to figure that one out. I don't care about weather sealing. I've never had it so maybe I don't know what I'm missing. :) My problem now is figuring out a camera bag for my various scenarios. I have too much gear. I also have an IR-converted SLR and a Mamiya 645. Plus lights. BTW, the Godox V1 is really awesome and works well with the r cameras. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and doing this video.

Thanks for sharing yours! I tried the 50 f1.4 on my Rebel for a bit, then adapted on my RP. I eventually sold it as it was kinda soft and lacking contrast wide open so I felt like that was defeating the purpose of the upgrade from the f1.8 a bit. I remember mine adapting well, but the RP definitely couldn't shoot as fast. Weather sealing for me is mostly peace of mind, particularly when traveling. I just don't want a scenario where I pack a thoughtful combo and can't use one of the pieces confidently. Most of the time it's not a problem... but in Ireland for instance, I was super glad I brought the 24-105 and 70-200 for this reason. And this is the reason I might be hesitant to fly with the 100-400. Haha I love a good bag and I think that piece is often overlooked/under appreciated. And similarly tricky to get close to a one-size-fits-all recommendation. The 600 packs small for what it is, but still a little awkward when packed I imagine.

Hi, thx for your great content and mentioning the Samyang 85 1.4 RF AF. Such a great value lens. I used to have the great RF 24-70 2.8 and did “upgrade it” last year for the beast RF 28-70 F2… but finally I recently gave it up. it was too big and heavy for me… I finally ended up by “downgrading” to old EF prime 2nd hand instead: - 24mm 1.4L mark 2 - 50mm 1.2L (I hesitated with the EF sigma art 50 1.4… but got the canon L for the same price, excellent condition) And with the rest of money I’ve got a second OG R6 during Black Friday So I usually shoot either 24+50 or RF 35 + 85 1.4 with 2 exact bodies instead of the 28-70… I know I’m loosing image quality but F1.2/1.4 to F2 is such a biggest difference from 2.8 to 2 to my opinion I’m also using the EF 135 F2L for sport photo (indoor ice hockey from the close border of the ice) with only one hand, even if the burst mode is limited to 6.5 fps 😢(the RF Samsung though could burst to 12fps mechanical) For light travel still using the RF 24-105 STM + 134… but seriously considering going to the RF 70-200F4

For that 100-400mm you could get a Canon R7, with the 1.6x crop you'll get a 640mm equivalent for photos, and for video, even better, the R7 has another 1.8x crop 4k mode that will get you to 1152mm without loosing quanlity !! have you considered that ? I'm considering the 100-400mm acutally now that I have the R7

I'm testing it out on a long-term rental right now! It's certainly intriguing - I like the idea of both that, and the 70-200 on the R7, but I need to test more. It has a lot of similar advantages as the R8 on the content side. So far it's holding up in longer recordings, 4k looks great, I like recording to both cards. But it's a pain in tight spaces without a wider lens, wish Canon had a nice 20mm for something like this. And not as multipurpose on the photo side for this reason given what I have. To be continued!

I will probably create a holy trinity of lenses for myself with those three RF F4 L's. Currently I only own the 24-105 F4L with my Canon R6 and I can't really justify going F2.8 with any of the Canon's current proposition as the prices are simply ridiculous (not to mention that you loose some of the portability of their F4 equivalents when traveling).

I have some reservations despite all the good - I would use f2.8 for the occasional astro, and would prefer to have it for video. Going with the 14-35mm, I could keep the Sigma, and that combo would be great. But the second I pack for a flight, I'd still be torn between them and wouldn't pack both. I'm trying to wait to see what Canon is releasing this year before doing anything right now because I agree, they're pricey.

As Canon has policy of not allowing 3rd party lens for the RF mount, what will be the impact of purchasing the Samyang 85mm RF F/1.4 lens now for R6? Edit: Otherwise, mine (and seemingly up to 1.8.1) is working fine. The harder part is probably finding a lens dock if you suspect the lens is still on version 2. I'm on 1.4.0 for the R6, so pretty behind 🙈 and partly afraid for this reason. I believe dual card video recording was enabled here so I wanted that. Found this on DP review from a month ago: "...I was several updates behind and decided to try firmware 1.8.2 today and then the latest 1.8.3, but both removed the autofocus capability of the lens completely. I had to revert back to 1.8.1 Thankfully, it worked, and I'm now simply staying put at 1.8.1." 😬 And I did update the lens itself using the dock, to version 3, which enabled IBIS, H, H+.

I just ordered an R8 because I decided I'd rather have an R8 and R7 than just an R6II (I've been agonizing on this, I hate the R8 battery so much). I've got the cheap RF 16, 24, 35, and 50, as well as 100-400. On the R7 I almost never use the 35mm so I think I just don't like the 50ish full-frame focal length. I'm expecting the 100-400 will live on the R7, and the 24 and 35 will be the primary R8 lenses, and the 50 will be used occasionally on either body (or maybe never on R8... no lens IS or IBIS). 16mm full frame seems wider than useful (but was necessary for the R7) so we'll see if I keep it. Every once in a while I hike up a mountain and I bet the 16 will come out then.

Thanks for sharing! This is a tough choice for everyone. I was wondering about the R6ii for myself, as it would help with the long recording stuff for me. But at the end of day, the original really does what I need for photo, so I felt I didn't want to spend to trade up and still have one body. Having a second makes these videos, bigger trips, and balancing freelance and personal projects so much more streamlined. I similarly struggled with a 14mm on full frame, just didn't use it enough for a prime, but agree - would be something I would want for an R7.

Great summary. I gotta say I'm starting to sour on Canon and their lack of 3rd party lenses and slow releases. Still no 24, 28 or 35mm L primes years after R release...like wtf. The budget RF lenses are generally good, especially the 16mm f/2.8, 28mm f/2.8 and the 50mm but no weather sealing, some external focusing quirks, and required canon Digital Lens Optimizer do get the most out of them. 28-70 f/2 and the 24-105 f/2.8 are all cool and all but nearly cost used car prices and double as gym weights. No thanks. Meanwhile, Sony shooters can buy things like the Tamron 28-200 f/2.8-5.6 and are getting amazing photos out of them. I sold my Canon R5C and bought a Fujifilm X-H2S and don't really miss anything except the face-only AF mode. Added benefit of the video camera and stills camera NOT competing for lenses in the bag.

I just want to be able to see more of their landscape before committing that deep, and like you said, that full picture is developing much slower than I've hoped. I've seen more and more about the Fujifilm X-H2S, and the Lumix S5 IIX. The latter looks pretty cool too, but maybe still one more generation of AF performance away from what Canon/Sony seem to be?

I just try to use smaller cards, swap them each day on a trip, and dump them more frequently. For a while, Canon didn't have great options in this price point to strongly recommend, but the R8 fills that spot nicely.

I've only rented the 85 f1.2's, so I'm limited in my practical use here... For some people the 24-105 f2.8 probably fills the role of both, for some people it might not. Probably comes down to three things 1) how much you shoot extra low light 2) how much video work 3) and how you feel generally about the focal lengths (are you dying for 70-105, do you love 85). If you're not in a massive rush, and this is as big a year as it's supposed to be, maybe we even get a smaller 85mm f1.6L or something. The 85mm f1.2 look is hard to replicate. If you're after the reach, maybe the 135 comes into the mix as an option. Haha when it doubt, wait it out. And test in the meantime if feasible.

@DanYosua This was super helpful! I think I'm just interested in the 85 mm and 105 mm reach. I mostly do phoyography, and I know that the way times are now, I should be doing more videos. I also like the cost effectiveness of it, but you're right no zoom lens can really replicate a prime look. I will definitely wait it out since the lens has a lot of video features that would be wasteful to me. If anything, I can always sell the RF 24-70 when I'm ready to expand on my lenses.
