In this video I talk about the settings I use for sports photography with my Canon R6 Mark II, from the generic settings, to customizable buttons.

This video was well done and helpful. I'd like to add another one here that maybe others will stumble upon. I missed a few shots yesterday due to the Image Review in the viewfinder. It's easily turned off in the Menu. The first Menu Group (camera icon), under #8 "Image Review".

As a person who just got an R6 Mark II and is preparing for my body to give up and prevent me from participating as a player in camogie, as well as Gaelic and Aussie footy, this could not be any better of an explainer for me. I love all of it. Thank you so much! The only difference I have so far is that AF-ON and * set to two different autofocuses, but this is partly because I also do a lot of street photography and like the ability to lock on to non-human objects quickly. Really loving the R6 mk II so far even if I a Ricoh GR III is my daily pocket camera for walking around the city.

Hi David. Great info once again. For me the 1.6 x crop mode is exciting. We shoot jpg for on-site prints so no editing is possible. I often choose my 7D ii over my 1DX ii for field sports because 400mm just isn’t enough for what I shoot. The aps-c 640mm fov is perfect. Being able to use the R6 ii as a full frame body for certain stuff, but being able to put it into crop mode is like having both cameras in one but with markedly better AF. If I need to use the mechanical shutter to avoid warping, that’s ok 👍

I still love my 90D because of the crop factor too, 640 vs 400 can make a big difference in some sports for sure, too bad the focus system is no where near the R6 II’s. I’m getting too used to it 😅

@@MLeeMedia I’ll definitely keep keep my 7D ii for shooting field sports. I’m not going to use the R6ii in bad weather. My 1DX ii will remain my indoor back up body for gymnastics, martial arts, dance and swimming etc. I’m struggling to get consistent results with my R6ii though, despite watching multiple sports (and wildlife) set up videos. It misses focus on things any camera should get, like someone walking away from or towards me, but then it nails focus on moving subjects that seem like it’s performing sorcery. I took my family to lavender farm recently and took shots of my daughter running towards me and even though the eye tracking remained stuck to her eye 9 out of 10 shots were soft. My EF 70-200 ii is incredibly sharp and as far I have concluded from others the adapter makes no difference to AF performance. I dunno, maybe I got a lemon of a R6 ii 🤷‍♂ have a job shooting gymnastics tomorrow and I’m concerned, but if I have any issues I’ll switch to my 1DX ii… which is obviously no hardship! At least I know the AF is consistent, even if it misses certain types of shots, like low contrast. When the af point hits the face 9/10 times it nails focus. The R6 ii shows the af point over the eye but the image isn’t critically sharp far too often. Fingers crossed it blows me away tomorrow …

Well, the Gymnastics went really well and I was pleasantly surprised. I kept my 1DX ii handy just in case, but it back in the bag after 30 minutes. Soccer/football on the weekend was a bit hit and miss. Disappointing... I might have reached by limit with it after trying just about everything.

You have the * button set up to reset the focus point but why not just press in the joystick to reset it? I have whole area tracking set to the AF on button and single point set to the *. For those times when it just doesn't want to focus on my target.

I see a lot of people assigning a dedicated button to reset the AF point to center. But if you middle press the joystick it does it by default. Or do you have something else assigned to that?

I don't, it's just preference on where the button placement is at, and also no chance of it doing something else (i.e. moving the joystick instead of pressing it).

Make sure you are using the official Canon battery for the R6 Mark II, and that it is charged fully, and that you have a lens that enables H+. All the RF lenses will as will many others. I use adapted EF 70-200 2.8 III and Sigma Art lenses and they all give me H+ mode.@@swiftdetecting
