Thank you! I wasn’t aware that the custom mode feature had changed. It drove me crazy that every time the came went to sleep it would revert to the original saved settings. So I enabled the auto update. I like this and will disable that feature. Another excellent video.

Well done explaining a topic that can confuse people. I use Custom Modes pretty much the same way as you - but for me the R7 is an exception. On that (which I only use for birds and wildlife) I set up a Custom Mode with all my birds in flight/fast action settings. This is because the camera has no third wheel, so I find quickly moving to fast action settings can be cumbersome. I'm normally in Fv mode anyway, but I still get caught out sometimes so I've just set a Custom Mode to get me at least in the ballpark if something fast happens when I'm not expecting it!

Yes I was having that problem today with my R7 switching from perched to BIF and missing shot fiddling with settings in Fv. Think I'll set my C1 to BIF as well 👍

Hi Ron, I use all 3 custom modes all the time to go between general aviation, birds in flight and aviation shots at a really low shutter speed to get prop and rotor movement, I have them set up in M-fn to directly change from 1-3 within about a second, works superbly for me 👍📷🦅✈️😃

Excellent video. One topic I was hoping to see is that of customizable buttons. I find that whole topic very confusing. When customizing buttons, you will see two columns of icons, one for photo and the other for video. My question is: when in, say, C1, and customizing buttons in the video column, which video mode is affected? Does it overwrite what customizations you may have in C1, C2, or C3 on the video side?

Great information. I wonder if it is possible to save the custom settings and load them on another camera with the same firmware. I don't have 2 R5's to try it.

Interesting video! Do the custom buttons hold such things like back button focus? So I could have the front shutter button for focus and taking the shot for landscapes? And back button for birds on another?

Yes, any custom button setting you make are registered when you register your settings to a custom shooting mode. So, you can have different buttons doing different things in the different custom shooting modes of C1, C2, and C3.

With my R10, trying to set up custom mode for the camera to utilize it's in-camera bracketing and stacking, in Auto Focus (not avilable for manual focus, bummer), for Macro work. When I tried to "Register", I received the message "Not available because of the associated functions settings (bullet) Focus Bracketing". What's with that?????????????????????? Many thanks in advance for your response.

Very informative video. On my R7 if i turn the camera off the exposure settings will revert back to the saved settings whe set at disable. Have you checked this on your R7? Thanks.

Thanks for the info! It seems that some of the Canon bodies still behave the old way when it comes to the custom shooting modes. I am hounding Canon to make all the cameras work the way they should, but it seems this is a big task for them.

On my R3 when the camera sleeps it reverts to the registered C mode settings if Auto Update Set. is disabled. I have firmware v1.4.1.

Dang! You are correct. I just rechecked the behavior of my R3 and it does revert. I must have had the auto update on when I tested the R3 by mistake. Now the question is why should the R3 be different? Here I thought Canon finally made the correct improvement. Back to the drawing board!

@@whistlingwingsphotography indeed! I had to check that was the case as it’s something that’s really bugged me. You gave me hope, but nope. It does seem odd that the other R cameras are different. Perhaps the next firmware update will sort this.

I sure hope so. Because the change needs to be made. I think everybody who works with custom shooting modes agree that the settings should not revert back "while shooting"@@colinfieldgate4719
