Looks like a great feature in principle, but not thought through or engineered enough. From a user's perspective, I would like to: - enter closest foreground focuspoint - enter furthest background focuspoint and then let the camera do the rest: - figure out the proper step size (depending on aperture, focal length, distance, etc.) - get the pictures between the two focus points - compose an optimized picture in camera and write that to the memory card. I hope this will be on the list for future firmware updates. It simply makes no sense to have to guess the proper step size and guess the number of shots required. And it makes no sense to "waste" shots on background depth that is either not on the picture or that I want to keep out of focus.

I use HeliconFocus and take maybe 20 shots for something similar. And I tend to use an aperture of 5.6 or 8 since the smaller the aperture the more the individual focus layers overlap.

Useful review and explanation - thank you.. I agree that smooth areas with low contrast/definition do not blend well. My way round this is to batch-process in LR, to add contrast/sharpening and export as JPEGS. I then load these as layers in PS and stack as you do.

Thanks for an interesting video. I quite agree that Canon's implementation of this could do with a lot of improvements as your other viewers have said. Olympus offer a much simpler solution with in-camera stacking although I have not tried it as I am a Canon user. I do however disagree with the relative speed of DPP and Photoshop. I have found DPP generally works in less than a tenth of the time that PS takes. I just did one stack that took 3 mins in DPP but when I tried it in Photoshop it was less than half way through when I gave up after 30 minutes. Also, you do not need to import the original images in to DPP in the way that you do with Lightroom and Photoshop. Once you have achieved the stacked image that you are aiming for you probably won't want to keep all of the original images so I just put them in a folder on the desktop which makes them instantly visible within DPP and then delete them when I have finished. That saves a lot of time too.

Hi, thanks for the video. In my old camera I can do this and us off camera flash. Now with the R6 is full automatic, and the camera won't trigger the flashes. Can you help me please.

Shooting at small close by objects I found that but it doesn't take very many shots to cover the distance. Maybe a dozen or so overlapping focus shots.

Suggest not shooting wide open - use the lens sweet-spot, probably around f8. You’ll need fewer images for one thing. Also, blend final JPEGs, not RAW.

Currently canon doesn’t have a great solution for this and it’s simply defined by the number of images/focus increments you select, so it’s very hit and miss. It would be good if they could improve this with firmware to enable you to tap to focus on a selected point to start and stop.

What was the purpose for over exposing “bring back in post”? If anything I’d under expose, because over exposing will run the risk of blowing out information and less data to work with for ‘bringing back’.

I may do a quick video on card recommendations next week as I’ve had a couple of questions on this topic lately, but in the meantime, I’ve been using the prograde cobalt v90 256gb cards. Main thing for me was making sure I had fast cards so I could also shoot 4K video and make best use of the 20fps stills. I’d recommend upgrading to faster cards if you’re using old slower ones but for stills, you won’t need to go so high grade. I’ve got some older 128gb Sandisk and Lexar cards that work fine in the R5 for stills too. May be worth shooting with the camera a bit before deciding what to get. Also Sandisk seem to have decent sales on their cards every 2-3 month so maybe look out for some discounts?

No it disables multiple exposure in the menu when you turn on focus bracketing.

Electronic - when you put it in the focus bracket mode it defaults to that and the shutter mode on camera menu tab 6 is then greyed out and locked to elec.

You started by setting the closest point, but I didn't see you set the furthest point. How does it calculate where to stop? Also, you had the number of images set at 500, but it obviously didn't take that many. These points are unclear in your video.

Hi thanks for watching - yes it doesn’t (current firmware) allow you to set a furthest point so it simply shoots images through the focus range until it reaches infinity. The number of images it takes greatly depends on how you have set the focus increments so for example it shot 129 images in my first example but I only actually needed around 75 of these for the composite image. I think the best thing to do is stop down you aputure to reduce number of images it takes. It definitely could still benefit from some extra options and refinement from Canon in future firmware updates.

@@lunazoul Especially since it would only require a few extra lines of code to add the feature. The same applies to the missing intervalometer. Let's hope the EOS R is eventually on the list of supported cameras for "Magic Lantern". It will fix both focus bracketing and intervalometer.

@@paulinap-k8409 .. yes, I’ve spent the last 3 years checking on this feature with Canon Tech and their reps and everyone says no it’s not going to be an upgrade to the R. It’s crazy because the R has been totally left behind in all upgrades. Why put it on the RP and 90D and not the R. I know Canon put it on the R6 to entice people to trade in, but for me I’m really annoyed with Canon over this.

@@alvarohernandez2764 It's for when you still want an out-of-focus background/foreground, but you want a certain area of the image in-focus. You can't achieve that with a smaller aperture.
