    Like everyone else, thank you -- great explanation! One simple question: In the images at 4:16 and 5:05, why is the histogram still running off the left side of the graph. Are these both examples of those intentional times when you might want this? I'm confused b/c you give 4:16 a "thumbs up" but it seems underexposed according the the histogram (even though the photo looks lovely). Thank you again!!

  • @ericstoner8635

    @ericstoner8635

    Hi Stella, very observant of you and thanks for the your questions. At the 4:25 mark I explain that in high contrast scenes when data tones extend beyond the graph on one side or the other, you must determine if those tones are important to you or not. In the two examples you sited, the first one was intentionally made to be silhouette so there shouldn’t be detain within the silhouette itself and by extension, most other areas with the exception of the sky. The second image of the Milky Way has the top of a mountain at the bottom of the frame on a moonless night. Naturally with no light striking that area, it will appear completely black with no detail. That’s okay because, just like the first image, the intent was not to have detail in those areas. Thanks for your questions Stella!

    Thank you for the video. However, I do have a question. I shoot CLog3. The histogram has (can have) these 2 regions on the left and right, depending if I stopped down or not. I don’t know what they mean. For instance, at ISO 640, the right vertical line is just in view but at 800 it moves off to the right. I’ve done lots of tests and the videos are quite balanced. Now, there was a scene recently were I was shooting many distance sailboats with tons of specular highlights and I must have set the exposure way underexposed. The video was absurdly compressed and impossible to edit. I must have underexposed based on the histogram. Your thoughts?

    Arusha, for IG, the resolution to set is 1080 pixel width, and go up to 1350 pixels tall. If it’s too large, Instagram will reduce it when you post and I’ve heard that can cause image degradation when they do the sizing.

    The Luminosity Histogram can give you false information and colors can get clipped. RGB Histogram shows not only Luminosity but the color channels. I was photographing aspen trees in the fall with blue sky. And my RGB histogram SHOWED the red channel was clipped but luminosity showed a good exposure. So I increased my exposure by shooting at a slower shutter speed to add enough light too allow ETTR exposing to the right. Bringing my brightest tones as far right as to capture detail in the last box on the right. My luminous histogram was now at the far right and all three color channels RGB were now perfect as well. Luminous alone is not always correct it can be a lying histogram. The opposite can also occur to much ETTR and colors can be come overly saturated. That's why using the RGB histogram display is very important. Even when shooting in RAW.

  • @jasonbodden8816
    @jasonbodden88162 жыл бұрын

    Actually, yes, I'm quite sure my exposures are fine without my histogram, bud lol (and yes, I do know how to read and use it). I'm usually within 1/3 to 2/3 of a stop. Good explanation, though.
